A card autobattler is a strategy game in which you choose or recruit units, build a team, and prepare its formation; then the units fight automatically. The player’s main decisions happen before combat and between rounds, not through controlling every attack. The word “card” may describe how units are presented or selected—it does not mean every game uses the same collectible-card rules.
How turns work in a card autobattler
Most card autobattlers revolve around a repeating choice-and-combat loop. The details vary by game, but the broad sequence is preparation, an automatically resolved fight, and a chance to adapt for what comes next.
- Choose units. Draft from a selection or recruit from a shop or roster, according to that game’s rules.
- Spend resources. Decide how to use the in-game resources available during preparation. The economy and what it can buy differ between games.
- Build a team. Consider how units, traits, abilities, and items work together. Each title defines its own synergies.
- Position the team. Arrange units so the formation meets the opposing team as effectively as possible.
- Watch combat resolve. Units fight without the player directing each move. Afterward, use the outcome and new choices to adjust the team for later rounds.
For example, a preparation phase might offer a choice between recruiting a unit that strengthens a developing synergy or saving resources for a later opportunity. You can then place that unit where it best supports the formation. Once combat begins, the team acts automatically; your earlier choices shape the result.
What strategy do you control if battles are automatic?
Automation shifts strategy from moment-to-moment commands to planning. The player influences which units enter the fight, how they complement one another, how available resources are used, and where the team is placed. Items and other upgrade systems can add another layer when a particular game includes them.

- Drafting or recruiting: Choose among the options a game makes available, while adapting if a desired unit or combination does not appear.
- Composition and synergy: Balance individual unit strength against combinations of traits, abilities, or other game-specific bonuses.
- Economy: Weigh an immediate improvement against keeping resources for later. The exact rules and trade-offs are title-specific.
- Items and upgrades: Decide which units benefit most from the enhancements available in that game.
- Positioning: Arrange the team before the fight, taking the opposing formation into account where the rules allow.
- Adaptation: Revise the plan as rounds unfold rather than assuming one team build will remain ideal throughout.
Teamfight Tactics and Hearthstone Battlegrounds: two examples
Teamfight Tactics (TFT) and Hearthstone Battlegrounds share the idea of preparing a team or board for automatic combat, but their official descriptions highlight different ways to present that loop. Riot describes TFT as a round-based PvP game involving a shared-pool draft, team building, economy management, items, and positioning. Riot’s explainer, credited to Riot Beernana, calls it “a round-based PvP game where you’ll draft a team that battles automatically on your behalf.”
Blizzard presents Battlegrounds as an eight-player auto-battling Hearthstone mode. Players recruit minions, build a board, and face a series of duels; they can place and reposition minions between combat phases. These examples illustrate related formats, not interchangeable rules.

To compare other games, check what you draft or buy, how resources work, whether units can be repositioned, how synergies and items function, and how combat and opponents are handled. Do not assume those mechanics match either example without checking that game’s own rules.

“Card autobattler” is a useful umbrella description, not a promise of one standard ruleset. The common thread is that players make strategic preparations and units fight automatically. Games can differ in their selection systems, economies, round structures, synergy rules, items, and combat details. Even the way opponents are encountered may vary, so inspect the individual game rather than inferring its rules from the genre label.
