Once that spell resolves, the card becomes a creature: a permanent on the battlefield. The two terms describe the same physical card at different moments, in different zones, and the difference determines which game effects can touch it.
The short answer
In Magic: The Gathering, “creature card,” “creature spell,” and “creature” are three different states of the same object. Wizards of the Coast’s official glossary illustrates the change with a single example: “For example, Angler Turtle is a creature card. While you’re casting it, it’s a creature spell. When it resolves, it becomes a creature.” (Wizards of the Coast, Common Keywords | Magic: The Gathering, “Spell” entry.)

The three states of a creature
Creature card
A creature card is the printed card as it sits in a zone such as your hand, library, or graveyard. It has the creature type and the card’s characteristics, but it is not yet on the stack or the battlefield, so no spell is being cast and no permanent exists.
Creature spell
A creature spell is the same card while it is being cast. Casting moves it onto the stack, the zone where spells and abilities wait to resolve. The creature spell label applies only in that window. Opponents can respond to it while it is there, for example with a counterspell.

Creature permanent (creature)
When the creature spell resolves, its controller puts it onto the battlefield. At that point it is a creature permanent, usually shortened to “creature.” This is the state that combat, creature-targeting effects, and most “creature you control” wording refer to.
How a creature spell becomes a creature
Under the Comprehensive Rules (Wizards of the Coast, Magic: The Gathering Comprehensive Rules, version dated June 19, 2026, see rules 302.1 and 302.2), a creature card is cast as a spell, which uses the stack. The sequence in a typical game looks like this:

- Check timing. A creature card without flash can be cast during one of your main phases when the stack is empty. Flash creatures can be cast at other times the rules allow.
- Cast the card. Move it from your hand to the stack. It is now a creature spell.
- Give opponents the chance to respond. While the spell is on the stack, other players may cast spells or activate abilities in response.
- Let it resolve. If nothing removes the spell from the stack, it resolves, and its controller puts it onto the battlefield as a creature permanent.
If the creature spell is countered, it never reaches the battlefield and is not a creature permanent. The difference between “spell” and “permanent” is therefore not cosmetic: it decides whether the card was ever on the battlefield at all.

Rules text uses the terms precisely, so the wording on a card tells you which state it is looking at. The table below compares the three states by zone, what the card is at that moment, and the kind of text that usually affects it.

| Term | Zone | Game state | Typically affected by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creature card | Hand, library, graveyard, or other non-stack, non-battlefield zone | Not being cast; no permanent exists | Text that names a card, such as “creature card in your graveyard” |
| Creature spell | Stack | Being cast and waiting to resolve | Text that names a spell, such as a counterspell that reads “counter target creature spell” |
| Creature (creature permanent) | Battlefield | Resolved and on the battlefield | Text that targets a creature, such as “destroy target creature” |
When a card says “creature spell,” it is looking at the stack. When it says “creature” with no other zone named, it generally means a creature permanent on the battlefield. Words such as “card” or “spell” change the target, so read the full wording instead of assuming the creature type alone decides the match.

Some effects move a creature card directly onto the battlefield from hand, the graveyard, or another zone. Those effects do not cast the card. The card never becomes a creature spell, the stack is skipped, and no opponent gets the normal chance to respond to the spell itself. The resulting object is still a creature permanent, so later effects that refer to creatures on the battlefield apply to it.

This is the most common source of confusion. “Does this count as casting a creature spell?” is answered no, based on the official wording: an effect that puts a creature card directly onto the battlefield does not cast it. Any card that cares about creature spells cast this turn, for example, will not see that card.
Quick checks when reading a card
- If the text says “spell,” the object must be on the stack.
- If the text says “creature” alone and names no zone, assume a creature permanent on the battlefield.
- If the text says “card,” look for the zone it names, such as your graveyard or your hand.
- If an effect moves a creature card to the battlefield, check whether the card was cast. It was not, and it is not a creature spell.
For a visual reference, any physical Magic: The Gathering creature card shows the same distinction: the printed card is the creature card, and the thing on the table after it resolves is the creature.
