A Death Totem is a tappable 2×2 building in Merge Dragons! that spawns one “dead thing” game item per tap. It produces 32, 33, or 34 items, then disappears when its spawned items are depleted, according to the game’s support page and the community wiki.
What does a Death Totem do?
Tap the Totem to spawn items from its loot table. Zynga’s Merge Dragons! Help Center lists three possible tap counts—32, 33, or 34—with each count shown at about a 33% chance. Each tap produces one item.

The Totem is consumed after its spawned items are depleted, according to the Merge Dragons Wiki. Collect or otherwise use the spawned items before expecting the Totem to disappear; tapping produces items rather than turning the Totem into a permanent structure.
