A Nuzlocke is a fan-made challenge for playing a Pokémon game with self-imposed rules. Its usual core is to catch only the first eligible Pokémon in each area and retire any Pokémon that faints for the rest of the run. Nicknames are customary, but rules vary: there is no official Nuzlocke mode or single binding rulebook.

How the core Nuzlocke rules work

Catch only the first eligible encounter in each area

When you enter a new area, you may catch only the first eligible Pokémon you encounter there. If that Pokémon escapes, is defeated, or is otherwise missed, many players count the area’s encounter as used. What qualifies as an area—and which encounters qualify—depends on the game and the rules you set.

A fainted Pokémon is retired

If one of your Pokémon faints, it cannot be used again for the remainder of the run. Players commonly release it or move it to a designated box; permanent retirement, not release specifically, is the important rule.

Nicknames are common, but not universal

Many players require nicknames to make the team feel more personal. Some standard descriptions include nicknames as a rule, while others treat them as an added custom rather than one of the two core restrictions. Decide whether to require them before you begin.

Optional rules that change the difficulty

Players often add clauses to make a run easier to manage, more demanding, or more suited to a particular game. These are choices, not requirements shared by every Nuzlocke.

  • Level caps: Set a maximum level based on the next major boss or challenge.
  • Battle-item limits: Restrict or prohibit items used during battles.
  • Healing or Pokémon Center limits: Set rules for when or how often you can restore your team.
  • Run-ending conditions: Decide whether a full party wipe ends the challenge.

Write down your rules before starting. That prevents an important decision—such as whether a missed encounter counts—from being made only after you know whether the outcome helps your run.

Set encounter rules for the game you are playing

“First encounter per area” is easiest to apply when a game clearly separates wild encounters by route. In games with different encounter systems, including Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, players may need to define eligible areas and encounters themselves. Before the first catch, decide how your run handles:

  • What counts as a distinct area.
  • Overworld encounters and how you choose the first eligible Pokémon.
  • Gift Pokémon and static encounters.
  • Duplicate species, if you want a clause that lets you skip them.
  • Pokémon that flee or are accidentally defeated.

There is no universal Scarlet and Violet interpretation established by the core rules. The useful approach is to choose a consistent house rule and apply it throughout the run.

Basic and stricter Nuzlocke setups

Both setups below are player-selected variants, not official difficulty modes.

Rule area Basic run Stricter run
Encounters First eligible catch per area; define how missed and special encounters count. Use the same limit, with additional clauses such as a duplicate-species rule if desired.
Battle resources Use a self-chosen policy for healing and battle items. Restrict or prohibit selected healing and battle items.
Levels No added cap, unless you choose one. Set level caps tied to upcoming bosses.

For a first run, the two core rules provide a clear starting point. Add stricter limits only if they make the challenge more enjoyable for you.

Where the name came from

Community references commonly trace the challenge to a 2010 webcomic by Nick Franco. The name is widely explained as a joke combining Nuzleaf with John Locke from Lost. This is the commonly cited origin story, not an official Pokémon account of the rules.

Is a Nuzlocke an official Pokémon mode?

No. It is a player-made way to approach a Pokémon playthrough, enforced by the player rather than selected as an in-game mode. A December 2024 post by forum member Meowy11111 on the Pokémon Forums describes it as “a playthrough of a Pokémon game with several self-imposed rules.” That is a community explanation, not an official rules pronouncement.
