A dice-builder roguelite is a run-based game in which dice shape the actions you can take, while your evolving build gives those rolls a strategy. Each run tests how well that setup adapts to new encounters and rewards. The term is a useful description, not a formal genre label with one agreed ruleset: some games use rolled dice to activate equipment, while others let you build or customize the dice themselves.
How dice work in a dice-builder roguelite
Dice supply uncertain results that the player must turn into useful actions. The details vary by game: you might assign rolled values to equipment with specific requirements, or change the dice set so it better supports your strategy.
Terry Cavanagh’s description of Dicey Dungeons captures one version of the idea: “You explore a dungeon, you find equipment, and you use dice on that equipment to activate it.” That is a description of Dicey Dungeons, not a rule that applies to every dice-builder roguelite.
Dicey Dungeons: use rolls to activate equipment
In Dicey Dungeons, dice are assigned to equipment, and each piece of equipment has activation requirements. The game uses six-sided values, but characters change how the dice-and-equipment system works. For example, the Robot calculates and rolls manually toward a target. These are mechanics of this particular game, not genre-wide requirements. See the Dicey Dungeons dice reference.

Circadian Dice: build a set of dice
Circadian Dice offers a different emphasis. Its Steam description says players build a set of dice rather than upgrade a deck. The distinction matters: assigning a result to an action and shaping the dice set that produces results are related ideas, but they are not the same mechanic.
What a build means
A build is the mechanical setup you assemble and use: the tools, abilities, dice, and combinations that shape your approach. In Dicey Dungeons, equipment found in chests or shops combines with character-specific mechanics. In Circadian Dice, the dice set itself is central to the build. The word describes what the player is putting together; it does not imply that every game has the same equipment slots, upgrade path, or progression system.

What happens during a run
A run is one attempt through a sequence of encounters or scenarios. Its rewards and challenges give the player opportunities to adjust a setup, while dice keep individual actions uncertain. The loop is therefore a series of choices: respond to a roll, use the available build, and decide how to adapt when the run offers something new.
Runs in Dicey Dungeons
Dicey Dungeons places the player in a randomly generated dungeon with floors, enemies, exits, rewards, and bosses. Defeating enemies can grant experience and coins; leveling up can restore health and provide rewards such as extra dice. In bonus rounds, rules can be added as the player advances, changing how an episode plays. The dungeon overview describes this structure.

Runs in Circadian Dice
Circadian Dice describes scenarios that can vary through random mutators and upgrade opportunities. That is another way a run can challenge or reshape a build; it is not evidence that every game in this broad category uses mutators or the same run structure. Details are in the game’s Steam listing.
How to compare dice-builder games
Because the term does not prescribe a single ruleset, compare games by asking what the player actually controls:

- What are you building? It might be equipment and a loadout, a set of dice, or another collection of abilities.
- How much control do you have over the dice? Can you assign rolled results to actions, alter values, or customize the dice themselves?
- How does the run change your setup? Look at the rewards, opponents, scenarios, and modifiers the game introduces.
These questions separate two games that share dice and run-based play but give the player different kinds of choices. For example, Nintendo describes Dicey Dungeons as a deckbuilding roguelike, while its central equipment interactions make dice the action resource. A game can draw on several genre descriptions without fitting a single rigid checklist.

Dicey Dungeons is a clear example of rolled dice activating equipment, with character-specific twists on that interaction. Circadian Dice is a useful contrast because its store description emphasizes building a dice set and variable scenarios. The official Dicey Dungeons site lists its platforms; check current store listings for availability, since platform and store information can change.
