A fighting game demo is a limited version that lets you try selected modes or features before playing the full game. Whether anything carries over is decided game by game: a demo may transfer no save data, preserve a specific item such as a character appearance, or support a broader import. Check the official information for the exact game and platform before counting on your demo progress.
What a fighting game demo lets you do
A demo provides access to a selected portion of a game. It may include only certain modes, sections of a story, or character-creation features, and it can exclude things such as online play. Demo content and save transfer are separate questions: a demo can offer several playable modes without carrying any of their progress into the full game.
What carries over depends on the game
“Progress” can refer to different kinds of data: progress through a mode, a created character’s appearance, unlocks, currency, or settings. Official policies may treat each differently, so look for specifics rather than relying on a general claim that progress does or does not transfer.
TEKKEN 8: save data does not carry over
Bandai Namco’s TEKKEN 8 demo information says, “Save data will not carry over to the full version.” The page describes a selection of content, including portions of Story and Arcade Quest, Super Ghost Battle, Versus, and Gallery; some content is partial, and online play is unavailable. This is an example where trying the demo does not let you resume its progress in the full game.

Street Fighter 6: mode progress and appearance are different
The Xbox listing for the Street Fighter 6 demo says World Tour progress is not saved. It separately says the avatar’s appearance is saved and will be available in the full game when the demo and full game are used on the same platform. In this example, saying that “nothing carries over” would miss the appearance data, while saying that “progress carries over” would overstate what transfers.
Conditions that can affect a transfer
Other publishers’ support instructions show how specific an import can be. Square Enix’s support articles describe cases where transfer depends on demo save data still being on the device, using the corresponding first-party account, or whether a full-game save already exists. One example says experience gained beyond the demo’s progression cap is not stored. These are examples of possible conditions, not rules for TEKKEN 8, Street Fighter 6, or fighting games generally.

Square Enix also notes that an import prompt may not appear if full-game save data already exists; another example discusses deleting the full-game save before trying a transfer again. Do not delete a save based on that example alone. Follow the specific game’s official recovery instructions, since deleting data may remove progress you want to keep.

- Find the game’s current official demo FAQ, store listing, or publisher support page. Confirm it refers to the demo and full-game edition you plan to use.
- Identify exactly what the policy covers: mode or story progress, character appearance, unlocks, currency, settings, or another type of data.
- Check any stated requirements, such as using the same platform, console, account, or regional version, and whether the demo save must remain on the device.
- Look for how the transfer works: automatic save detection, a one-time prompt, or a menu option. Check whether an existing full-game save affects importing.
- Separately check demo limits, including progression caps, partial modes, and unavailable features such as online play.
There is no universal transfer rule or cross-game rate established by these examples. Use each title’s own instructions; a condition documented by one publisher does not establish how another game’s demo behaves.
