A gaming VPS is a virtual private server configured to host a multiplayer game server. It gives you administrator access to an operating system, the ability to install the game server software and mods you need, and control over settings that are hidden or restricted on many shared game-hosting plans. Most gaming VPS offerings use KVM virtualization and advertise allocated CPU resources, rather than the highly variable performance that can occur when many customers share one container host.
Godlike.Host offers a gaming VPS on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with full root access, if you want to run several game servers yourself.
The right choice is not the plan with the most virtual cores. For most games, especially Java-based Minecraft, fast single-thread CPU performance, sufficient RAM with 20–30% headroom, NVMe storage, a data centre close to your players, and included network-level DDoS mitigation matter more. The figures below are guide-level recommendations from hosting-company material, not official requirements published by game developers, so verify the current limits and terms before you pay.

A virtual private server (VPS) is a virtual machine running on a physical server. The provider divides that physical machine into isolated virtual environments. Your gaming VPS normally includes a virtual CPU allocation, memory, storage, a public IP address and an operating-system image, usually Linux or Windows. You administer the machine and install the game server yourself, or ask the provider to manage some of that work.
“Gaming” describes the intended workload, not a separate virtualization technology. A gaming VPS is tuned or marketed for persistent, latency-sensitive game servers: Minecraft, Rust, ARK: Survival Evolved and similar titles. You can run a control panel, scheduled backups, mods, plugins, voice services or monitoring alongside the game process, subject to the plan’s resources and acceptable-use rules.

What you control
- The operating system and security updates.
- The game-server binary, version, configuration files, mods and plugins.
- Startup parameters, scheduled restarts, backups and access permissions.
- Firewall rules, additional services and a custom management panel.
What the provider controls
- The physical host, hypervisor, data-centre network and power systems.
- The virtual hardware limits, billing and any traffic or process policies.
- Mitigation infrastructure, support coverage and the availability commitment in the contract.
A VPS is therefore a middle ground. Shared game hosting is easier but usually limits software and system access. A dedicated server gives you the whole physical machine but costs more and leaves you responsible for more hardware capacity. A VPS keeps the administrative freedom of a server at a lower entry price, while the underlying physical hardware remains shared.
How does virtualization affect game-server performance?
Many providers use KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine). KVM presents a complete virtual machine to the guest operating system, so you can run your own kernel-level environment and install normal server software. Providers may describe the assigned virtual CPUs as dedicated or reserved resources. That generally gives more predictable scheduling than a heavily oversubscribed container, but it does not necessarily mean that an entire physical core is reserved only for you. Ask how CPU contention is handled if the provider’s wording is unclear.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGame servers are not uniform workloads. A world simulation may execute most of its important logic on one main thread while using other threads for networking, saving or auxiliary tasks. Consequently, a plan advertising eight slow vCPUs can perform worse in a tick-sensitive game than a plan with four faster vCPUs. Look at CPU generation and sustained clock speed, not just the core count.
How do I choose a VPS for a game server?
Start with the game, player target and software load. Then compare CPU quality, memory, storage, location, mitigation, management and the written service commitment. The same plan can be excellent for a small vanilla Minecraft world and unsuitable for a mod-heavy Rust community.

1. Define the workload before comparing plans
- Name the exact game and server version.
- Estimate peak concurrent players, not only the number of registered users.
- List mods, plugins, maps, bots, scheduled jobs and any voice or web services that will share the machine.
- Decide whether you need Windows-specific software or can run Linux.
- Allow for growth and for temporary spikes during events, raids or updates.
Write this down before looking at prices. Otherwise, a low monthly rate can hide the cost of an upgrade, a control panel, a backup service or DDoS protection.
CPU: prioritize single-thread speed over a large core count
For many game servers, the main simulation thread determines tick rate and the responsiveness players feel. Higher per-core performance and a newer CPU generation usually matter more than adding several low-speed cores. Java Minecraft is a clear example: its primary game loop is heavily dependent on one thread, so a fast core can be more valuable than a larger nominal vCPU allocation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
As a screening rule, prefer a high-frequency plan and ask for the processor model or generation. One buyer guide uses a high-frequency tier with a 3 GHz-or-faster Intel Xeon as an example; treat that as an illustration, not a universal minimum. Clock speed alone is not a benchmark: turbo behaviour, sustained load, host oversubscription and the game’s own engine also affect results.
When additional cores help
- Several game instances run on the same VPS.
- Mods, map generation, compression, backups or web panels use worker threads.
- The title’s server software is known to parallelize simulation effectively.
- You want spare capacity so maintenance jobs do not interrupt the game process.
Do not pay for extra vCPUs as a substitute for a weak single-thread processor. If a provider will not identify the CPU family or explain its contention policy, treat the advertised core count as an uncertain comparison.

How much RAM does a Minecraft, Rust or ARK server need?
Memory requirements depend on world size, player count, server version and modifications. The following figures come from hosting-guide estimates and are not official developer specifications.
| Game and scenario | Guide-level baseline | Planning advice |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft, very small whitelist server | At least 2 GB | Suitable only for a small, lightly loaded world. Leave additional memory for the operating system and management tools. |
| Minecraft, modded pack or larger community | About 4–8 GB | Choose within this range according to mod count, world size and peak players; monitor usage rather than assuming the upper value is always enough. |
| Rust | At least 8 GB | Use more if the map, plugins or concurrent population create sustained memory pressure. |
| ARK: Survival Evolved | High-memory plan, described as 16 GB or more | Plan for the game’s larger memory footprint and for any additional maps or services on the VPS. |
Add roughly 20–30% above the game’s baseline as operating headroom. Combat, explosions, world generation, map changes and mod overhead can create short-lived peaks. The headroom is not a promise that a specific player count will work; it is a buffer against swapping or an out-of-memory crash.
How to size memory in practice
- Reserve memory for the operating system, security agent, control panel and monitoring. Do not assign every advertised gigabyte to the game process.
- Start from the game-specific baseline in the table.
- Add 20–30% for bursts, then add any separately documented allowance for mods, extra maps or multiple instances.
- After launch, inspect actual peak usage during a busy event, not only during an empty-server test.
- Upgrade when the server repeatedly swaps, crashes, triggers the operating system’s out-of-memory protection or shows sustained memory saturation.
More RAM cannot repair a CPU-bound tick loop. If memory remains available while tick time is high, investigate CPU generation, per-core speed, entity counts or a problematic plugin instead of buying memory blindly.
Storage: make NVMe the starting point
World files, region files, logs, mod packages and backups generate frequent small reads and writes. NVMe storage is described in current hosting guides as the baseline for a game VPS rather than an optional luxury. It can reduce save and loading delays compared with slower disk storage, although it cannot overcome a CPU bottleneck or poor network path.

Questions to ask about storage
- Is the advertised capacity NVMe, and is it local to the host or network-attached?
- Are snapshots or backups stored separately from the VPS disk?
- What happens when the disk fills: alerts, automatic expansion or a stopped process?
- Are input/output limits stated, or is performance shared without a published policy?
Keep free space for world growth, logs and at least one recovery copy. A backup on the same virtual disk is not protection against host or disk failure.
Does location matter for game-server latency?
Yes. Choose the data centre closest to the largest concentration of players, not a region described only as “global.” Every network hop and long-distance link adds delay and can increase jitter or packet loss. A Frankfurt location may be a sensible compromise for European players but a poor choice for a group concentrated in Sydney.

- Map your expected players by city or country and identify the largest cluster.
- Prefer a location near that cluster, then check the provider’s available regions and network partners.
- If your community is split across continents, choose the region that serves the majority or consider separate regional instances.
- Ask whether the quoted IP is in the advertised city and whether traffic is routed through a mitigation facility elsewhere.
- Test from representative player networks after deployment; a nominally close data centre can still have a poor route to a particular ISP.
There is no single latency number that applies to every provider or player. Network conditions change by ISP, time of day and route, so a provider’s location list is not a substitute for testing.
Do I need DDoS protection for a game server?
For a public game server, assume that you need a mitigation plan. Attacks can make the IP unreachable, consume bandwidth or trigger a provider’s null-route procedure. Look for always-on, network-level mitigation included in the VPS price, rather than protection that starts only after support staff react.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Questions that expose weak DDoS terms
- Is mitigation enabled by default for game traffic, or must you activate it?
- Where does filtering occur: at the provider’s edge, in the data centre or on the VPS itself?
- Does it protect the game port and protocol, not only a web server?
- What traffic volume and attack types are covered?
- Will the provider null-route the address during an attack, and for how long?
- Are protected IPs, additional instances or higher limits billed separately?
One reviewer describes DDoS protection as an optional extra starting at $10 per month per instance. That is a guide-level, time-sensitive figure, not a market standard. Compare the full protected price with an apparently cheaper unprotected plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Managed or self-managed gaming VPS?
| Approach | What you get | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-managed | Root or administrator access; you install updates, firewall rules, game files, panels and backups. | Operators comfortable with Linux or Windows administration who need maximum flexibility. | You are responsible for security, recovery, performance tuning and most troubleshooting. |
| Managed | The provider handles some combination of updates, monitoring, setup, backups and support. | Communities that value less administration and have a predictable software stack. | Higher cost or narrower software choices are common; define exactly what “managed” includes. |
“Managed” is not a universal service level. Before ordering, obtain a written list of included tasks, response times, backup retention, reboot authority and charges for custom installations. A managed plan that does not include game-specific troubleshooting may still leave you responsible for mod conflicts and configuration errors.
Uptime, support and network commitments
Look for a written uptime SLA of 99.9% or higher, along with its measurement method and exclusions. An SLA is a service credit framework, not a guarantee that players will never disconnect. Read whether maintenance, DDoS events, provider network incidents and customer-caused outages are excluded.
Evaluate support before an incident
- Check the support channel and hours for urgent network or host failures.
- Ask whether support can access console output and perform a hard reboot.
- Confirm the restoration process if the VPS disk or host fails.
- Find out whether snapshots are automatic, how long they are retained and where they are stored.
- Review the cancellation and upgrade rules so a busy community is not trapped on an unsuitable plan.
Independent, published statistics comparing gaming-VPS latency or uptime across the market are not established here. Treat provider claims as contractual promises only when the exact terms are written in the order and SLA documents.
What should a gaming VPS cost?
A hosting guide places a configuration of 4 vCPUs, 8 GB RAM, NVMe storage and DDoS protection at roughly $15–$25 per month for many communities below 100 concurrent players. This is a dated guide estimate, not a guaranteed market price or a recommendation for every game. Providers may charge more for a premium CPU, a scarce region, management, backups, additional protected IPs or Windows licensing.
Compare like with like. A low headline price may exclude DDoS mitigation, backups, a control panel, IPv4, traffic allowances or support. Conversely, a higher price may include those items and a better CPU. Ask for the recurring total, renewal price, taxes, one-time setup charges and upgrade cost.
A practical buying process
- Write a workload brief. Record the game and version, peak concurrent players, mods, maps, operating system, backup needs and growth target.
- Set a minimum hardware profile. Choose a fast single-thread CPU, the game’s RAM baseline plus 20–30% headroom, NVMe storage and enough free disk space for worlds and logs.
- Shortlist nearby regions. Rank data centres by where players live, then investigate routing and mitigation geography.
- Separate included features from add-ons. Price DDoS protection, backups, management, control panels, IPv4 and licensing as recurring costs.
- Read the SLA and acceptable-use policy. Confirm uptime measurement, maintenance windows, traffic limits and what happens during an attack.
- Ask for CPU and virtualization details. Obtain the processor family, vCPU contention policy and storage type; do not rely on core count alone.
- Deploy a reversible test. Install the intended game version and mods, invite representative players, and observe tick performance, memory peaks, disk latency and disconnects during a busy period.
- Document recovery. Test a backup restore, record console access and confirm how to resize the VPS without rebuilding the world.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing by RAM alone: A large-memory plan with a slow, contended CPU can still produce lag. Compare processor generation and single-thread performance.
- Buying the cheapest region: Distance and routing can hurt every player. Place the server near the actual community.
- Treating “DDoS protected” as a complete answer: Verify that mitigation is always on, covers game traffic and does not silently null-route the address.
- Assigning all memory to the game: Leave room for the operating system, panel, backups and bursts.
- Assuming a core count predicts tick rate: Some game loops use one main thread. Extra cores help only when the software or additional services can use them.
- Confusing a backup with a snapshot: A snapshot on the same host may not survive a storage failure. Keep an independently stored recovery copy.
- Accepting an undefined managed plan: Get the support scope, response target and backup policy in writing.
- Relying on unverified minimums: Vendor guides provide useful starting points, but the game developer may publish different requirements. Validate with a real load test and the game’s current documentation when available.
When a VPS is the wrong choice
A VPS may be unnecessary for a tiny private session if a simple shared game-hosting plan already supports the required mods and player count. It may also be insufficient for a very large community, many simultaneous instances or workloads that need guaranteed physical cores; in those cases, compare a larger VPS tier or a dedicated server. The decision turns on required control, predictable CPU performance, player geography and the total cost of protection and administration—not on the word “gaming” in the product name.
