When you stream, GB describes how much data you use; Mbps describes how quickly data can travel. How many GB a video uses depends on the service and its quality settings, so there is no single streaming rate that applies everywhere.
What does GB mean?
GB stands for gigabyte, a decimal unit of digital information. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines 1 GB as 109 bytes, or 1,000,000,000 bytes. A byte is a unit used to measure data; a gigabyte is a much larger quantity of it.
GB is not the same as Gb: the capital B in GB means bytes, while the lowercase b in Gb means bits. Internet speeds are commonly stated in bits per second, while files and data allowances are commonly stated in bytes.
GB vs. GiB: what is the difference?
A gigabyte (GB) and a gibibyte (GiB) are different units. GB uses a decimal base; GiB uses a binary base. NIST defines 1 GiB as 230 bytes, or 1,073,741,824 bytes—more than 1 GB.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Unit | Meaning | Number of bytes |
|---|---|---|
| GB | Gigabyte, decimal | 1,000,000,000 |
| GiB | Gibibyte, binary | 1,073,741,824 |
The symbols are useful when interpreting technical specifications. If a number is labelled GB, do not assume it means GiB, or vice versa.
GB vs. Mbps: data amount vs. connection speed
GB measures a quantity of data. Mbps means megabits per second and measures a rate: how quickly data can be transferred. They answer different questions. A data allowance might be expressed in GB, while a streaming service’s recommended connection speed might be expressed in Mbps.

Netflix, for example, recommends a stable connection of at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K. Those are Netflix’s speed recommendations for video quality, not estimates of how many GB viewing will use.
How much data does streaming use?
It depends on the streaming service, its data settings, and the video quality. Netflix’s Help Center publishes these estimates per device:

| Netflix setting or quality | Netflix’s estimated data use |
|---|---|
| Low | Up to 0.3 GB per hour |
| Medium | Up to 0.7 GB per hour |
| High, standard definition (SD) | Up to 1 GB per hour |
| High, high definition (HD) | Up to 3 GB per hour |
| High, ultra-high definition (UHD/4K) | Up to 7 GB per hour |
| Auto | Adjusts data use to balance quality and connection conditions |
These are Netflix’s own estimates, not a universal rate for video streaming. Other services, content, devices, and settings may use different amounts. Netflix’s mobile data settings express some options as approximate viewing time per GB: Automatic is about 4 hours per GB, Save Data about 6 hours per GB, and Maximum Data can use 1 GB per 20 minutes or more, depending on device and network speed. Netflix says its highest mobile setting is intended for unlimited data plans.
How to estimate your streaming data use
Use the streaming service’s estimate for the quality or setting you expect to use. Multiply its estimated GB per hour by the hours watched to estimate data consumption. To estimate viewing time, divide your available data allowance by the hourly estimate.

- At Netflix’s stated High HD estimate of up to 3 GB per hour, two hours would use up to about 6 GB.
- With an allowance of 10 GB and that same estimate, 10 divided by 3 gives about 3.3 hours of viewing.
These are calculations based on Netflix’s estimates, not guarantees of exact usage. Actual use can vary. Netflix lets users change data settings, and restricting data use may reduce video quality.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can affect streaming quality and usage?
Video quality and data use are related, but a speed recommendation does not tell you the exact amount of data a stream will consume. Netflix says congestion anywhere along the connection can affect streaming quality or cause playback problems. Home connection strength and simultaneous network use can also affect the viewing experience. Netflix does not quantify how much each factor changes data volume, so its hourly figures are best treated as estimates.

Why you may have heard “3 hours per GB”
That figure comes from a historical Netflix mobile-data setting, not a current general rule. In a May 5, 2016 announcement, Netflix said its then-default cellular setting would allow “about 3 hours of TV shows and movies per gigabyte of data.” The announcement described that setting as approximately 600 kilobits per second. Netflix’s current Help Center lists different estimates by setting and quality, so the 2016 figure should not be treated as today’s default or as a cross-service average.
Keep a YouTube stream running without leaving a PC on
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel stream built from uploaded videos—not ordinary on-demand viewing—StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud, so your computer and home internet connection do not need to stay on. Upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps; the service does not re-encode it, and there are no quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Shorter and longer billing terms are available, and subscriptions can be cancelled any time.
Monthly: $9.99 per month
For an always-on YouTube loop, the cloud means nothing has to stay on at home; any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps uses the same one-price-per-slot approach; and StreamNeo can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
