Real-world DIY versions recreate its look and selected functions with a small computer, display, controls, battery, software and a wearable enclosure. What they can do depends on the parts and code in each build; none reproduces the fictional device’s full capabilities.
What is a Pip-Boy?
Bethesda describes the Pip-Boy 3000 as RobCo’s wrist-mounted computer and an interface into Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. In the games, it presents information a player needs, including maps, notes, equipment and inventory. Bethesda’s official replica preserves much of that game content on a screen and adds functions such as FM radio, a headphone port, flashlight, alarm clock and the Atomic Command minigame. Bethesda’s announcement calls it “your travel companion, your inventory manager, your navigator and a wasteland wanderer’s best friend.”
The term can refer either to the fictional device, a licensed replica, or a fan-made computer project. The replica is a finished collectible engineered to represent the game device; a DIY build is a maker’s own electronics project, so its features come from the hardware and software chosen for it.
How do real-world DIY Pip-Boys work?
A DIY Pip-Boy combines familiar electronics in a custom wearable shell. The computer runs an interface, the display shows it, physical controls let the wearer navigate, and a battery supplies power. A maker can add other modules, but each addition brings its own wiring, software and fit requirements.

Computer and interface
Raspberry Pi boards are used in documented builds. The Raspberry Pi Foundation featured a version based on a Pi Zero W, while Adafruit’s design uses a Raspberry Pi Model B+. The computer runs the project’s software, which draws a Pip-Boy-style interface and connects inputs to menus or functions. Adafruit’s Python application uses OpenStreetMap data; a separate maker project provides a Python interface with demonstration screens.
Display and controls
The screen might be a small TFT or HDMI display. Adafruit specifies a 3.5-inch PiTFT, while the Pyp-Boy project lists a 4.0-inch HDMI display. Size and display interface affect enclosure dimensions, wiring and software setup. Navigation may use a touchscreen, buttons, rotary switches or encoders; Adafruit’s design describes an analog rotary switch and encoder, and Pyp-Boy uses a knob-driven interface.

Power, extras and enclosure
A rechargeable battery powers the computer and screen. Adafruit’s example also includes an audio amplifier and speaker, plus a yellow LED. More elaborate projects can add modules such as GPS, software-defined radio or a pulse-oximeter breakout. These are optional, project-specific additions—not standard features of a DIY Pip-Boy. Their presence in a parts list does not establish that they work as dependable navigation, communications or medical equipment.
The shell holds the components and gives the project its wrist-mounted shape. Some makers 3D-print a case, as in Adafruit’s build; another Raspberry Pi Foundation feature showed a maker welding scrap plastic into one. The enclosure must be designed around the actual arm, screen, controls, connectors and battery rather than just the game’s appearance.

What parts might a DIY Pip-Boy need?
There is no universal bill of materials: a display, computer and enclosure that suit one design may not fit another. These documented examples show the range of approaches, not a requirement to buy every listed component.
| Documented build | Listed parts and approach | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Adafruit Raspberry Pi Pipboy 3000 | Raspberry Pi Model B+, 3.5-inch PiTFT, PowerBoost 1000C, 2200mAh lithium battery, 2.5W mono amplifier, thin speaker, rotary switch, encoder, Wi-Fi module, LED, resistor and audio cable; 3D-printed enclosure. | Guide last edited February 1, 2016. Adafruit warns its code is out of date and may require reverse engineering, so treat it as a design reference and check current parts availability, driver support and compatibility before following it literally. Read the Adafruit guide. |
| Raspberry Pi Zero W project | Raspberry Pi Zero W in a maker-fabricated shell; the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s coverage describes a welded scrap-plastic case. | A different fabrication route from a printed enclosure. The coverage is a project feature, not a standardized parts list. See the Raspberry Pi Foundation feature. |
| Pyp-Boy open-source project | Raspberry Pi Zero 2, 4.0-inch HDMI display, RTL-SDR module, GPS module, pulse-oximeter breakout, lithium-ion battery, power-boost charger, rotary encoders, push button and printed CAD models. | Project-specific list, not a minimum kit for a simpler interface. The listed sensor and radio modules do not by themselves establish reliable medical or emergency use. Review the Pyp-Boy project. |
What should you decide before building one?
- How you will make the shell: A 3D-printed case gives a different fabrication path from a hand-built or adapted shell. Either way, leave room for the real components and access to controls and charging.
- Which computer and screen to use: The board, display size and interface affect fit, wiring and operating-system or driver support. Confirm that the parts work together before designing the enclosure around them.
- How to navigate: Touch input, rotary controls and buttons call for different interfaces and case layouts. Physical controls can help evoke the game device, but they add mechanical and wiring work.
- Which functions are worth integrating: A themed menu or map is a smaller software scope than adding GPS, radio reception, sensors or custom audio. Every module increases integration work.
- How it will wear: Fit depends on the wearer and the placement of the screen, battery, controls and connectors. The documented projects do not provide a consistent comparison of weight or comfort.
How difficult is a DIY Pip-Boy project?
Expect a combination of fabrication, soldering, wiring, software installation and repeated fit checks. The Raspberry Pi Foundation described its featured build as “not what we’d call a beginner’s project,” and Adafruit classifies its guide as intermediate. The older Adafruit tutorial is particularly not a guaranteed turnkey route because it says its code is out of date and may require reverse engineering.

- Useful accessory functions: FM radio with added extension antenna cable, ready to tune in to your favourite station, 3.5 mm headphone socket, alarm clock and bright LED torch.
- A faithful replica: Die-cast front metal casing coated with a silk finish green paint with silver-coloured detailing, developed using the in-game geometry and additional details from the original high-poly model.
- Massive content library: Scroll, explore, personalise, customise and dynamically interact with the hundreds of inventory menu entries taken directly from Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas.
- Play minigames: For the very first time play the Atomic Command and Reign of Grelok minigames on your Pip-Boy for real.
- Exhibition display grade: The elegant stand with its solid aluminium machined metal base, displays the Pip-Boy perfectly and also allows it to be used as an awesome desk or nightstand clock.
Keep expectations tied to the specific build. The documented projects show themed interfaces and selected hardware functions, not a fully general-purpose or safety-certified wearable computer. A module’s inclusion in a fan project is not proof that it provides reliable navigation, communications or health monitoring.
How is the official replica different from a DIY build?
Bethesda’s licensed 1:1 Pip-Boy 3000 replica is based on the Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas design and was developed with The Wand Company. Its listing describes an IPS LCD, in-game content, FM radio, flashlight, alarm-clock use and Atomic Command. The listed materials include a die-cast metal front, injection-moulded ABS body and memory-foam cuff; it comes with a rechargeable LiPo cell, USB-C cable and stand. Bethesda Gear Store listed its weight as 724g and its price as $299.99 USD when accessed October 7, 2026; price and availability can change.

A DIY version lets a maker choose and customize the components, but requires selecting compatible parts, assembling the device and programming its interface.
