It is a team result, but the NHL tracks goalie shutouts as a separate statistic—and when two NHL goalies combine for one, neither gets individual credit.
What is a shutout in hockey?
A shutout means the opposing team scores zero goals during the game. The winning team does not need to score a particular number of goals; the defining fact is that its opponent scores none.
The term can describe the team’s result or an individual goaltender’s statistic. In NHL records, a team can earn a club shutout even when no single goalie receives individual credit for it. The NHL glossary explains its shared-goalie treatment in its hockey glossary.
Does a goalie need to make a certain number of saves to earn a shutout?
No minimum save total is part of the NHL shutout statistic. A shutout records that the opponent scored no goals; saves and shots against are tracked separately. A goalie could face many shots or very few—the shutout count itself does not show the workload.

This is why shutouts should not be treated as a substitute for other goalie statistics. The NHL glossary defines save percentage as saves divided by shots faced, and goals-against average (GAA) as goals allowed multiplied by 60 and divided by minutes played. Those rates describe performance relative to shots or playing time, while shutouts count games without an opponent goal.
Can two goalies share a shutout?
Under the NHL’s stated rule, if two goaltenders combine for a shutout, neither receives individual credit; it is recorded as a club shutout. That is the NHL’s specific statistical treatment, not a rule established here for every hockey competition or every substitution scenario. For another league or level, check its current governing-body rules.

How is a shutout recorded in goalie stats?
In NHL goalie tables, shutouts appear in the SO column. They are a counting statistic, unlike Sv% (save percentage) and GAA, which are rate statistics. The NHL’s live goalie statistics list shutouts separately from saves, shots against, goals against, save percentage, and goals-against average.
When comparing goalies, consider the context alongside SO:

- Shots against: show the volume of shots faced.
- Sv% and GAA: add rate-based context that a shutout total alone cannot provide.
For a meaningful comparison, use the same season, game type, and competition. The NHL’s 2023-24 regular-season goalie table is one example of a season-specific shutout listing.
Who holds the NHL shutout record?
There is more than one NHL shutout record, so the answer depends on the category: career total, single-season total, most consecutive shutouts in a season, or longest shutout sequence in a season. The NHL’s goaltender records page lists these categories and covers records from 1917-18 through 2025-26. A record-holder should be named with the category and timeframe, rather than as a single unqualified “shutout record.”

Current-season leaders and totals can change, so consult the live NHL statistics table for up-to-date figures rather than relying on an older season example.

A shutout streak is a run of games in which a team—or a goalie, depending on the statistic being described—keeps opponents from scoring. NHL.com reported that Brian Boucher recorded five consecutive shutouts in January 2004; the streak ended after 332:01. This is a historical example, not a claim about a current record. The account appears in NHL.com’s January 9 history feature.

Do shutout rules differ outside the NHL?
They may. The individual-credit statement above is specifically the NHL glossary’s rule, and the sources cited here do not establish a comprehensive rule for every competition’s treatment of goalie changes, overtime, or shootouts. If you are tracking stats for a different league, youth team, or video-game simulation, use that competition’s current rulebook or official stat definitions rather than assuming NHL conventions apply.
