A Steam primary group is a Community Group you choose to associate with your profile. You can select or change it from the Groups area in your profile/persona menu, provided you already belong to that group. It is a profile choice—not a way to join a group, change its membership settings, or gain a role.
What is a primary group on Steam?
Steam Community Groups are hubs where people share interests, coordinate gaming activities, and use group-specific forums. Steam says group owners and admins can manage membership, content, and privileges. Your primary group is the group you select as the main one associated with your profile; it does not change your status or permissions within the group.
Older community explanations describe the primary group as appearing first in the profile’s groups section. Steam’s current official guidance confirms the setting exists, but does not guarantee a precise position across today’s profile layouts. For group features and membership types, see Steam Support’s Community Groups overview.
How to change your primary group
- Sign in to Steam.
- Open your profile or persona menu and choose Groups.
- Use the primary-group control to choose a group you belong to. Steam confirms this Groups route in its Counter-Strike group-lobby FAQ.
If you do not see the control there, an older Steam Community help discussion describes an alternate route: open Edit Profile, locate Primary Group, select the group, and save. Interface labels and placement can change, so treat this as a fallback rather than a guaranteed current screen-by-screen path: Steam Community discussion of changing a primary group.

You must be a member of a group before you can select it. Choosing it as primary does not join it, alter whether it is public or closed, or change your role.
How group membership and roles differ from the primary setting
Steam lists three group membership types:
- Public: Users may join directly or by invitation.
- Restricted: Users request membership or may be invited.
- Closed: Invitation only.
Group roles are separate: Owner, Officer, Moderator, and Member. The primary-group selection is a profile preference layered on top of membership; it does not grant authority or change the group’s access rules. Steam’s group documentation explains group management and membership.

What the primary group does in games
The setting can have a game-specific use beyond profile presentation. Steam’s Counter-Strike FAQ describes group lobbies in which the lobby leader can set a game mode and map group. That is a Counter-Strike lobby feature, not evidence that changing your primary group has the same effect across all Steam games. See the Counter-Strike FAQ for that title’s details.
Does your primary group show to other people?
Steam provides three general profile privacy states: Public, Friends Only, and Private. You can find them by opening your profile’s Edit Profile page and selecting the Privacy Settings tab. Steam’s privacy guidance does not specify exactly how the primary-group field appears under each state or across desktop, web, and client views. Do not assume that selecting a primary group makes it private; check your current privacy settings and view the profile as appropriate. See Steam Support’s profile privacy FAQ.

Steam’s group-joining limit
Steam Support says an account that has joined 1,000 Steam groups cannot join more until it leaves enough groups to fall below the limit. Followed official game groups do not count toward that limit. This is a limit on joining groups, not on how many groups can be selected as primary. Details are in Steam Support’s group limit FAQ.

Pick the group that best represents the community you want associated with your profile. Consider whether it reflects your current gaming circle and whether its own membership and privacy settings suit you. Steam does not rank or recommend groups according to these criteria; they are practical ways to make the choice.
