The descriptor alone does not identify the exact purchase. Compare the date and amount with Steam’s purchase history, and check whether anyone else with access to your payment method made it. If it remains unexplained, contact Steam Support and your bank or payment provider.
What the Steam charge could be
Steam lists “Valve Software,” “Steampowered.com,” and “Steam Games” as descriptors that may appear for charges from the company. Steam says those charges are for computer games, DLC, or in-game items or currency. Descriptors can vary by bank or payment method, so these examples are not a guarantee of the exact wording on your statement. Steam Support’s unrecognized-charges guidance explains the descriptors.

A descriptor is a clue, not proof of who made a purchase. Check the account and payment method before treating an unfamiliar entry as fraud.
How to match the charge to a purchase
- Note the transaction details. Record the exact statement descriptor, amount, date, and whether the transaction is pending or completed.
- Check Steam purchase history. In the Steam Client, select your account name, then Account Details > View purchase history. You can also check through the Steam Help Site. Compare the purchase date and total with the statement.
- Ask anyone who could use the payment method. A household member or another person with access to the card or account may have made the purchase on their own Steam account.
- Consider differences in the final total. Depending on the country and payment method, the bank or payment provider may add processing fees, taxes, or currency-conversion charges. Steam says it does not control those fees. If Steam’s purchase record does not explain the amount, ask your payment provider about the statement total.
Steam says it has no recurring or monthly fees unless a charge is explicitly stated as part of an online game subscription. If you see a repeated charge you cannot match to such a subscription, investigate it rather than assuming it is a standard Steam membership fee.

If you still do not recognize the charge
Use Steam Support’s “I have charges from Steam that I didn’t make” route. Steam asks for details to locate the transaction, including the statement name, exact amount and date, payment type, and the last four digits of the card. It may also ask for your email address and, if needed, a phone number. If the statement descriptor is PayPal, Steam requests the associated invoice ID.
Share only the details Steam requests for identifying the transaction. Do not send your full card number, expiration date, or CVV: Steam Support says it will never request them.

If Steam’s purchase history does not match the statement or invoice, contact your bank or payment provider as well. It can explain the transaction’s status, any added fees, and the next steps for a disputed payment.

A pending entry after a failed Steam purchase can be a temporary authorization hold rather than a completed payment. In the specific case where an Address Verification System (AVS) or CVV check fails, Steam says it will not collect the funds that the bank has set aside. The bank controls when it releases the hold; Steam’s purchasing FAQ says release may take up to 30 days in this scenario. That is not a general guarantee for all pending transactions, so ask your payment provider about your specific hold and its expected release timing. See Steam’s purchasing FAQ.
