“Adaptive AI” in EA SPORTS College Football 26 is a useful shorthand for several gameplay systems—not the name of one standalone feature or menu setting. The clearest example is Real-Time Coaching (RTC): EA says CPU defenses track the offensive concepts and areas of the field you attack, recognize route combinations such as Flood, Mesh, and Smash, and use targeted counters. You can adjust CPU AI sliders and choose a difficulty level, but EA’s description does not establish that opponents remember your tendencies across separate games or Dynasty seasons.
How does the AI adapt during a game?
EA describes Real-Time Coaching as a way for CPU defenses to respond to what the offense is doing. Its 9-Box system tracks where and what the offense attacks; according to EA’s gameplay deep dive, the defense can recognize concepts including Flood, Mesh, and Smash, then surface counter calls through Coach Suggestions. EA frames the goal as giving players access to the kinds of in-game adjustments a coordinator might consider.
EA’s description of RTC extends beyond pass coverage. It also includes delayed pre-snap shifts, formation-specific run fits, threat recognition, and targeted countermeasures. In practical terms, the feature is intended to make CPU opponents push back against offensive choices rather than behave as if every play is unrelated.
These are EA’s explanations of how the systems are designed, not independent measurements of their accuracy or effectiveness. EA’s published material does not establish that the CPU permanently learns a player’s tendencies between separate matches or carries that learning into later Dynasty games.

What else does “adaptive AI” include?
The phrase can also refer loosely to related improvements EA lists alongside RTC. Its College Football 26 gameplay page describes enhanced AI and dynamic play-calling adjustments, as well as improved blocking and coverages, Dynamic Substitutions, and custom zones. Those are related parts of the broader gameplay feature set, not evidence of one switch called Adaptive AI.
EA also describes improved quarterback progression logic, double-move recognition, and blitz response. These concern offensive CPU quarterback behavior and should be understood as related AI work, not as the mechanism by which RTC’s defense counters a human player’s calls.

Can you change the CPU AI?
Yes. EA’s US-English accessibility resource for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions lists Player and CPU AI sliders, as well as five difficulty levels. The available information confirms those controls, but does not specify the exact effect of each slider value or establish that a particular setting disables RTC.
Difficulty and sliders are the practical controls for tuning the challenge; RTC describes how EA says the CPU behaves during play. They answer different questions, so changing a difficulty level should not be treated as choosing a separate “Adaptive AI” mode.
