An Easter egg is a deliberately hidden surprise inside software or media. It might be a joke, secret message, developer credit, playable mini-game, visual reference, or unusual interaction. Some examples still work; others disappeared with later updates, so this guide labels them accordingly.

What is an Easter egg?

An Easter egg is an intentionally concealed message, joke, reference, animation, feature, or mini-game placed inside software, a website, video game, film, television program, or another creative work.

The important word is intentional. An Easter egg is hidden enough to reward exploration, unusual input, close observation, or fan knowledge. It can be visual, textual, auditory, interactive, or functional, and it may be created by programmers, designers, writers, directors, animators, actors, or production crews.

Not every Easter egg is useless or purely comic. A hidden game, creator credit, technical demonstration, or cross-reference can all qualify. What matters is that the content was deliberately placed outside the ordinary experience and is discovered through an unexpected route.

Where did the term come from?

The origin most commonly credited is Atari’s Adventure for the Atari 2600, released in 1979. Programmer Warren Robinett secretly created a hidden room displaying the words “Created by Warren Robinett.”

Atari generally did not prominently identify individual programmers in its games, which helped motivate Robinett’s concealed credit. Players could enter the room after finding a nearly invisible gray dot and following the right sequence of actions. The secret was discovered after the game shipped.

According to the commonly repeated account, Atari executive Steve Wright compared the discovery to an Easter-egg hunt, helping popularize the term for hidden digital surprises. The chronology and exact wording are historical explanations rather than an uncontested verbatim origin story. Mozilla summarizes the story alongside examples from Firefox in its history of software Easter eggs.

An earlier Unix joke is sometimes mentioned in the same history: entering make love could produce the response “not war?” It may be an early hidden software behavior, but it is not generally treated as the source of the modern popular term.

Easter egg vs. cheat, bug, unlockable, and cameo

Concept Intentionally hidden? Usually playful or referential? Example
Easter egg Yes Usually Firefox’s about:mozilla page
Cheat code Yes or semi-secret Not necessarily A code granting extra lives
Unlockable Usually progress-gated Not necessarily A character earned after finishing a game
Bonus feature Often advertised Not necessarily A film’s deleted-scenes menu
Bug or glitch No No A character passing through a wall unintentionally
Developer tool Often hidden Not necessarily A debug menu left in a release build
Cameo or reference May be visible Often A director appearing in a film
ARG clue Yes Often narrative-driven A puzzle leading to external websites

These categories can overlap. A secret playable mode can be both an Easter egg and a mini-game; a hidden developer room can be both an Easter egg and a credit. Conversely, a visible logo, ordinary unlockable, accidental exploit, or fan theory is not automatically an Easter egg.

27 famous Easter eggs

Status key: Live means the documented route is intended to work in at least some current installations. Version-specific, seasonal, historical, discontinued, and disputed indicate that availability or interpretation requires caution.

Software and browsers

1. Chrome’s offline Dinosaur Game — live, platform- and policy-dependent

When Chrome cannot connect to the internet, its error page displays a pixel-art Tyrannosaurus. Press the spacebar on desktop, or tap the dinosaur on supported mobile versions, to start an endless runner. You can also enter chrome://dino in Chrome’s address bar. The spacebar or up arrow jumps, and the down arrow ducks where supported. Google says the game originated in 2014 and was designed to make an offline interruption less frustrating. The trigger and controls can vary by browser version, device, or enterprise policy. See Google’s Chrome Dino history.

2. Firefox’s “Book of Mozilla” — version-specific

Entering about:mozilla in Firefox historically opened an apocalyptic-style passage from the fictional Book of Mozilla. Its mock-scriptural language references Mozilla and Netscape history. Internal about: pages change over time, so a blank or unavailable page usually means the feature was removed or altered in that release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Firefox’s about:robots — version-specific

Mozilla documented about:robots, a playful page filled with robot-science-fiction references, including “Klaatu barada nikto” from The Day the Earth Stood Still. It should be treated as a documented historical or version-dependent page, not a guaranteed feature of every current Firefox build.

4. Firefox’s about:credits — version-specific

Firefox’s credits page used a normally technical destination to acknowledge contributors and volunteers. Its purpose is partly functional and partly playful: it turns software attribution into something users can deliberately discover. Mozilla discusses these pages in its Firefox Easter-egg article.

5. Excel 97’s hidden flight simulator — historical

Microsoft Excel 97 famously contained a flight-simulator-like sequence reached through an obscure series of spreadsheet actions. It demonstrated how much secret interactive content could be hidden inside a large desktop application. The activation sequence was edition-specific and is not a reason to install obsolete Office software today. Historical context is described in accounts of Excel 97’s hidden simulator and Microsoft product Easter eggs.

6. Word 97’s hidden pinball game — historical

Word 97 included a secret pinball mini-game. It is a classic example of programmers placing a substantial interactive joke inside productivity software rather than shipping only a small text message. It belongs to the historical Office era and should not be presented as a Microsoft 365 feature.

7. Access 97’s Magic 8 Ball-style feature — historical

Historical Microsoft Easter-egg lists identify a Magic 8 Ball-style simulation in Access 97. The feature illustrates how a database program could contain an unrelated novelty, but it is not a current Access capability. The surviving documentation is summarized in the Microsoft Easter-egg list.

8. Adobe After Effects’ sheep sound — version-specific

Research into software Easter eggs identifies hidden After Effects behaviors including a sheep sound and an interaction called “Mask Embiggen.” These examples show that professional creative tools can hide audio jokes and playful commands alongside serious production features. Exact support depends on the After Effects version and operating system; do not assume an old activation method still works. See the research paper on software Easter eggs.

9. GIMP’s “Goat Exercise” — version-specific

Academic research identifies GIMP’s hidden “Goat Exercise” as a playful, nonessential feature in image-editing software. It is useful conceptually because it is not a cheat, productivity feature, or bug: it is an intentional novelty tucked into a serious tool. The exact route may vary by release.

10. VLC’s holiday Santa hat — seasonal or historical

VLC has been associated with a seasonal Santa-hat icon or holiday-themed interface surprise. Date-triggered visual changes are especially fragile because maintainers can remove them, redesign the interface, or change the calendar condition. Treat this as seasonal or historical unless it has been tested in the target VLC release.

11. Visual Studio Code’s seasonal surprises — seasonal or version-specific

Research on software Easter eggs lists a Santa hat associated with Visual Studio Code as an example of a date-triggered interface surprise. It is not safe to publish a permanent activation path without checking the current release. This is also a reminder that software Easter eggs can be tied to dates rather than secret commands.

12. Debian and Ubuntu’s apt-get moo — version- and distribution-dependent

On a Debian-based system, open a terminal and run:

apt-get moo

The command has long been cited as a harmless command-line joke hidden behind an ordinary package-management tool. Output can differ with the installed apt version and distribution. It does not install or change packages, but users should still avoid copying unrelated commands from untrusted websites. The behavior is discussed in software Easter-egg research.

13. MATLAB’s hidden jokes and responses — version-specific

Research literature identifies playful MATLAB behaviors involving commands such as spy and image, among others. These are examples of technical software responding in unexpected ways. Because commands can change between releases and may produce real plots or data output, verify the current documentation and test in a disposable workspace before presenting a procedure.

Websites and search services

14. Google Search’s “do a barrel roll” — availability may change

Searching Google for do a barrel roll historically rotated the results page. It is a clean example of a natural-language query triggering a visual interface effect. Search Easter eggs are volatile: availability can vary by region, language, device, account, or redesign, so a missing effect is not a reason to use an unofficial clone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

15. Google Search’s “askew” — availability may change

Searching for askew historically tilted the results page slightly. Like the barrel-roll trick, it illustrates how a search box can conceal an interaction rather than merely return information. Do not promise that every Google domain still supports it.

16. Google’s Pac-Man playable Doodle — archived or event-specific

Google has published interactive Doodles, including a playable Pac-Man version. A Doodle is often openly promoted rather than truly hidden, so it sits near the boundary: the game may be visible, but its playable behavior can still function as a surprise for users who explore it. Archived availability depends on Google’s Doodle archive and the particular event. The broader screen history is covered by the BFI’s history of screen Easter eggs.

17. YouTube’s “awesome” player effect — discontinued or unreliable

Historical accounts describe typing awesome while a YouTube video was playing, causing player elements to flash in multiple colors. Reports indicate that the feature was discontinued or became unreliable. It is best treated as platform history, not as a guaranteed current trick.

18. YouTube’s 301-view joke — historical

YouTube’s old 301-view counter behavior became a self-referential Easter egg. View counts could appear frozen at 301 while YouTube checked traffic, and a video about that behavior turned the platform’s technical quirk into a joke about YouTube itself. This is a historical example, not a currently repeatable feature.

19. Chrome’s chrome://dino shortcut — a second discovery route

The shortcut is not a separate dinosaur game; it is a second way to reach the same Easter egg without disconnecting from the internet. It is worth mentioning because discovery method is part of the experience. If the internal address does not open, use the offline page instead and check whether the device is managed by an administrator. Google’s documentation of the game confirms the shortcut.

Video games

20. Adventure‘s hidden Warren Robinett credit — historical

The secret room in Atari’s Adventure displayed “Created by Warren Robinett.” Finding a gray dot and reaching the hidden room gave players a developer credit that the normal game did not provide. It is the example most commonly credited with popularizing the term, not necessarily the first hidden feature ever made.

21. Moonlander‘s hidden McDonald’s restaurant — historical

DEC’s 1973 computer game Moonlander is often cited as an early video-game Easter egg. Flying horizontally across the lunar landscape could reveal a McDonald’s restaurant, with special behavior if the player landed near it. The exact version and hardware context matter, so this should be understood as an early historical example rather than a modern game secret.

22. Animal Well and layered secrets — modern design example

Animal Well shows how contemporary games can make concealed mysteries central to their identity. Instead of hiding one isolated joke, a game can use layers of secrets, environmental clues, and community discovery as part of the main appeal. The BFI discusses this broader evolution in its history of screen Easter eggs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

23. Battlefield V‘s falling whale — documented research example

Research on software Easter eggs cites a Battlefield V secret involving a falling whale, commonly interpreted as a tribute to Douglas Adams’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The literary connection should be described as an interpretation unless the relevant developer documentation confirms it. Exact map, mode, and update details should be verified before giving step-by-step instructions.

24. Grand Theft Auto‘s hidden references and jokes — series-wide category

The Grand Theft Auto series is known for environmental secrets, parody brands, hidden locations, and pop-culture references. These can qualify as Easter eggs when they are deliberately tucked away or reward close exploration. Because the series spans many games and updates, a precise article should identify the exact title, platform, and documented location rather than claiming that one universal GTA Easter egg works everywhere.

Movies and television

25. Alfred Hitchcock’s cameo in The Lodger — historical

Alfred Hitchcock’s appearance in The Lodger is an early screen example of a creator hiding in plain sight. A cameo is not automatically an Easter egg: it qualifies when the appearance functions as a concealed or playful nod to attentive viewers. Hitchcock’s recurring appearances helped establish the tradition of directors signing their films visually.

26. Tron‘s Pac-Man reference — visual reference

Tron embeds Pac-Man imagery in its visual world, connecting a science-fiction film about digital spaces with one of the defining games of the period. It is a useful example of a reference that rewards viewers who recognize the shape or context without interrupting the story.

27. Ready Player One‘s dense network of references — broad usage

Ready Player One contains numerous references to games and films, including Back to the Future, The Shining, and Atari’s Adventure. Not every visible reference in a pop-culture-heavy film is technically hidden, but audiences often use “Easter egg” broadly for concealed callbacks, insider details, and visual references. That broader usage explains why the term now covers far more than secret software commands.

How to find Easter eggs safely

  1. Start with official or reputable documentation. Look for creator announcements, company articles, archival material, academic research, or established publications.
  2. Check the exact version and platform. A method from Office 97, an old Firefox build, or an earlier YouTube player may be irrelevant to the current release.
  3. Prefer reversible actions. Try a search phrase, an internal address, a normal menu action, or apt-get moo. Avoid registry edits, exploit code, unofficial binaries, and configuration changes made only to reveal a joke.
  4. Do not download abandoned software from file-sharing sites. Historical eggs are interesting without exposing a modern device to unknown installers.
  5. Expect regional and device differences. Search features may vary by country, language, account, or Google domain. Keyboard-based eggs may not have mobile equivalents.
  6. Respect managed devices. An administrator may disable browser games or internal pages on a work or school computer. Do not bypass those controls.
  7. Treat a missing result as information. The egg may have been removed, disabled, changed, or made incompatible. It is not a reason to weaken security settings.
  8. Watch for spoilers. Game secrets and film references can reveal hidden areas, plot details, or late-game content.

Internal pages such as about:config are not Easter eggs by themselves and can alter important Firefox settings. Do not change them merely because a guide claims a hidden feature is nearby.

Why do creators hide Easter eggs?

  • Credit: Programmers and artists can leave a signature when formal credits are limited.
  • Humor: A serious tool or frustrating error screen becomes more human with a small surprise.
  • Discovery: Hidden content rewards careful users and encourages exploration.
  • References: Creators can acknowledge influences, favorite games, films, books, or communities.
  • Community: Secrets create word-of-mouth discussion, guides, theories, and collaborative discovery.
  • Product personality: A tiny hidden interaction can make software feel crafted rather than anonymous.

Chrome’s dinosaur game is a particularly clear example: Google describes it as a response to the frustration of losing internet access. The surprise turns dead time into a small game instead of leaving users with only an error message.

Are Easter eggs still common?

Yes, but they are more difficult to preserve reliably. Modern software updates frequently, cloud interfaces can change without notice, and security reviews may remove undocumented behavior. Legal and licensing concerns can affect pop-culture references, while accessibility and product-consistency requirements may discourage unexplained animations or controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As a result, today’s Easter eggs are often seasonal, tied to a particular release, placed in a game world rather than a menu, or preserved through an official archive. A good guide separates live tricks from historical examples instead of presenting every old listicle claim as current.

The practical definition

The defining feature of an Easter egg is not secrecy alone. It is deliberate concealment combined with a reward for noticing, exploring, or understanding the reference. That reward might be a laugh, a creator credit, a playable diversion, a connection to another work, or the satisfaction of discovering something most users miss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every hidden feature an Easter egg?

No. It must generally be intentionally concealed and designed as a surprise, joke, reference, or reward. A bug, ordinary unlockable, cheat, or hidden developer tool may overlap with the category, but is not automatically an Easter egg.

Does every Easter egg still work?

No. Browser pages, search tricks, seasonal effects, and software behaviors can disappear after updates. Always check the product version, platform, region, and source before trying a documented method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Atari Adventure definitely the first Easter egg?

It is the example most commonly credited with popularizing the term, thanks to Warren Robinett’s hidden credit room. Earlier hidden software behaviors are discussed in historical accounts, so “the first ever” is too absolute.

The Bottom Line

An Easter egg is a deliberately hidden surprise—not merely any secret, bug, cheat, or reference. Try current examples cautiously, and treat older software and search tricks as version-specific history.
