An extraction shooter asks you to enter a dangerous map, gather loot or pursue objectives, and get out alive to keep what you found. In ARC Raiders, that means risking a surface run against both hostile machines and other players, then bringing resources back to Speranza to support crafting, repairs, upgrades, and progression. Combat matters, but deciding how much to risk—and when to leave—is part of the game.
What an extraction shooter is
An extraction shooter is built around a trip into a dangerous area and an attempt to return with something valuable. You might be looking for resources, useful equipment, or a way to complete an objective. The key is that finding loot is not the same as securing it: you have to reach an extraction point and successfully leave the map with it.

That creates a different measure of success from simply winning a fight. A player can win an encounter and still lose the run’s value by failing to extract. Conversely, leaving without fighting can be a successful outcome if the haul is worth keeping. Survival and judgment sit alongside aim and combat skill.
There is no single formal definition that every game in the genre must follow. The explanation here describes the shared gameplay idea reflected in the official ARC Raiders pages and Xbox Wire’s launch preview: enter, take risks to gather value, and try to get back out with it. Individual games can vary in how much gear is at stake, what happens after failure, and how players encounter one another.

How an ARC Raiders run works
ARC Raiders is a multiplayer extraction adventure set on a future Earth where people live underground in the community of Speranza. Raiders go to the surface to scavenge resources and face ARC machines as well as rival players. What comes back can feed a longer loop of crafting, repairs, workshop improvements, and character progression.
- Prepare in Speranza. Use the workshop to craft, repair, or upgrade gear before heading topside. The equipment you bring matters because a failed run can put carried gear at risk.
- Enter the surface and look for value. Search for resources and useful equipment, and pursue objectives as appropriate. The choice is not just where to go, but how much additional danger is justified by what you might gain.
- Respond to machines and other Raiders. ARC machines create PvE threats; human Raiders create possible PvP threats. Another player might fight, avoid you, or cooperate temporarily, so an encounter is not automatically predictable.
- Decide whether to continue or extract. More time on the surface can mean more opportunities to find value, but also more exposure to danger. Extracting safely secures the haul; a failed run can cost carried equipment and the chance to bring newly found loot home.
- Put the haul to work. Returned loot can be sold, crafted into gear, or used to improve workshop stations and progression. The next raid begins from what you have built up, rather than resetting every session to zero.
This is why the decision to leave is not an afterthought. It is the point at which potential gains become secured gains. The exact balance changes with what you brought, what you have found, and how exposed you feel. That risk calculation is a useful way to understand the genre, even for a player who would rather avoid unnecessary fights.
Why ARC Raiders is PvPvE
The term PvPvE means player versus player versus environment: human opponents and game-controlled enemies can both shape a run. In ARC Raiders, machines are not merely background hazards while players provide the only meaningful threat. PlayStation’s game overview describes enemies with differing strengths and tactics, while the official game site frames both machines and Raiders as dangers.

PlayStation warns that the noise of a battle can draw other Raiders. A fight therefore carries a cost beyond its immediate outcome: it may reveal your presence or attract another player while you are occupied. That does not mean every noisy encounter will bring an opponent, or that every opponent will attack; it means combat can change the conditions around you.
Nor should you assume another Raider is automatically hostile or friendly. Xbox Wire’s launch preview described sessions ranging from quiet scavenging to repeated firefights, and reported encounters that included friendliness and betrayal. That is a firsthand account of preview play, not a guarantee that every current match will have the same rhythm. The important practical point is uncertainty: another person’s intentions are not fixed by the game’s premise.

What is at stake when a run fails?
The extraction loop matters because the result of a failed encounter can reach beyond the immediate fight. Xbox Wire’s launch preview says that going down can mean losing equipment brought into the raid as well as the opportunity to take newly gathered loot home. That gives each run a before-and-after stake: you may risk some of your existing capability to gain resources that can help later.
It is worth keeping that description in its proper scope. The cited account is a launch preview, and it supports the broad warning that failure can cost carried gear and unbanked loot. It does not establish that every item is always lost under every circumstance, or specify all current loss rules. Treat the value of your loadout and haul as something to weigh, rather than assuming a particular item-by-item outcome not described here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsXbox Wire also describes free loadouts as a lower-risk way for new or struggling players to enter a raid, with no risk of loss for that loadout. This can make a run less costly to attempt, but it does not turn extraction into a guaranteed outcome or remove the need to deal with threats. The preview presents free loadouts as an option, not a reason to disregard the risks of the run.
For a new player, this changes the question from “Can I win this fight?” to a wider set of decisions: Is the potential gain worth the gear I have at risk? Have I already collected enough to make leaving sensible? Would taking another fight improve the haul enough to justify its danger? The game’s central tension comes from having to make those decisions before you know the result.
Progression continues between raids
ARC Raiders connects surface runs to activity back in Speranza. Loot can be sold or turned into gear through crafting, while resources can support repairs and workshop improvements. The game’s Steam and PlayStation descriptions also identify blueprints and skills as parts of progression. As a result, extraction is not just about escaping a single match: what you bring back can contribute to future options.

This persistent loop distinguishes the experience from a conventional team deathmatch. In a team deathmatch, the immediate objective is typically to beat the opposing team within the match. In an extraction shooter, a firefight is one possible obstacle or choice inside a larger effort to gather and secure value. A player who avoids a fight and extracts can succeed at the run; a player who wins several fights but fails to leave may not keep the benefit of that success.
Progression also explains why a raid’s value is personal and contextual. A resource may matter because it can help with a craft, a repair, or an upgrade; equipment may be useful now or as part of a longer plan. The available descriptions establish these broad uses, but do not provide a complete item-by-item crafting recipe list or a universal valuation for loot. It is more useful to think of the haul as input to your workshop and progression than to assume every item has the same importance.
Can you play ARC Raiders solo?
Yes, you can enter as a solo Raider. PlayStation describes support for solo players as well as parties of two or three. But solo entry does not mean offline play: PlayStation identifies ARC Raiders as online and multiplayer-only. A solo player is still participating in the online game, where other Raiders may be part of the threat.
This distinction matters when deciding whether the game fits what you want. “Solo” answers how many people are in your group; “offline” answers whether the game can be played without an online multiplayer environment. The cited description supports the former, not the latter. It also does not establish that solo play removes PvP risk or guarantees encounters against similarly sized groups.

As of October 13, 2026, the official ARC Raiders site says Embark is testing a PvE matchmaking toggle from October 13 at 11:00 CEST through October 20 at 11:00 CEST. That is a limited test window, not evidence that a permanent PvE-only mode is available. The announcement establishes the test and its dates; it does not establish what will happen to the option after the test ends.

GamesRadar reported on October 9 that executive producer Aleksander Grøndal described the test as a chance to answer an ongoing question about PvE matchmaking. The report said a future split into separate PvPvE and PvE experiences was “very possible.” That wording describes a possibility, not a confirmed roadmap or a promise that a permanent split will be made. Grøndal also said, “Naturally, we were a bit like, ‘Are we gonna open this door? What does that mean?’”
For a player deciding what the game currently offers, the careful distinction is between the established core and a temporary experiment. The core game described by the official pages and PlayStation overview mixes machine and player threats. The official site’s dated notice adds a temporary PvE matchmaking toggle during the stated October 2026 window. Neither the test nor the producer’s reported comments establish a permanent change to the game’s matchmaking structure.
How to tell whether the genre suits you
An extraction shooter may appeal if you enjoy making decisions under uncertainty: what to carry, what to pursue, whether to engage, and when to secure what you have. It can be frustrating if you want every fight to be a self-contained contest with no consequences for the next attempt. Before choosing a game in this genre, compare the stakes and rules that matter to you rather than relying on the label alone.
- Gear at risk: Find out what a failed run can cost and whether there are lower-risk ways to enter. For ARC Raiders, Xbox Wire’s launch preview describes carried gear and newly gathered loot as potentially at stake, and identifies free loadouts as a no-risk option for the loadout itself.
- How avoidable PvP is: Consider whether other players are a constant, occasional, or optional threat. ARC Raiders is presented as PvPvE, and its launch preview describes a range of player encounters rather than a single fixed pattern.
- How PvE contributes: Look at whether enemies are meaningful hazards or simply scenery. ARC machines are a central threat in ARC Raiders, with different strengths and tactics described by PlayStation.
- What persists: Check whether resources and equipment feed longer-term progression. In ARC Raiders, loot can support selling, crafting, repairs, workshop improvements, blueprints, and skills.
- What “solo” means: Verify whether solo play is supported and whether that means offline play. ARC Raiders supports solo entry, but is described as online and multiplayer-only.
Those questions are more informative than asking only whether a game has shooting or loot. The genre’s defining pressure is the link between a dangerous outing and the attempt to carry its rewards back out. In ARC Raiders, that pressure is layered with machine encounters, uncertain player interactions, and progression that gives recovered resources a purpose after the run.
