An extraction shooter is a multiplayer shooter in which you enter a dangerous area, collect loot or complete objectives, and then reach an extraction point to carry your rewards out. If you die before you leave, the gear you were carrying can be lost. That choice, staying for more or leaving with what you already have, is the genre’s central tension.
How a run works
Most extraction shooters follow the same basic sequence. The exact rules differ from game to game, but the pattern is consistent:

- Enter a hostile area. You start a match on a map where other threats are present from the beginning.
- Gather loot or complete objectives. Depending on the game, this might mean scavenging items, tracking a target, or finishing a set of tasks.
- Decide when to push and when to leave. Every new location offers more reward and more exposure.
- Reach an extraction point. Getting there alive is what secures your haul.
- Carry the rewards out. Items you extract can feed into later equipment or progression, depending on the game.
Level Infinite’s November 3, 2022 overview of the genre puts the loop in one line: “The core gameplay loop is simple – get in, loot, and get out.” The same overview notes that prolonged firefights can draw other combatants into the fight, which is why a run that goes quiet is often safer than one that goes loud.
Why the risk is the point
The genre’s appeal comes from the trade-off between reward and loss. Extracted loot can improve your later equipment, but the upgrades also raise the stakes: the better your gear, the more you have to lose on a failed run. Xbox Wire’s October 30, 2025 coverage of ARC Raiders frames the genre the same way, describing a run in which you enter a hostile area, complete objectives, and extract with items that help future runs, while the equipment you carry is at risk if you do not make it out.

Loss rules are where games differ most. Before you commit to a genre or a specific title, check:
- Which items are lost on failure, and whether all carried gear is at risk or only some of it.
- What persists between runs, such as stash, unlocks, or progression.
- Whether extracted items can be used for crafting, upgrades, or character development.
Who threatens you: other players, AI, or both
Extraction shooters vary in who creates danger. Three common models are:
- PvP (player versus player): The main threat comes from other human players competing for the same loot or objective.
- PvE (player versus environment): The main threat comes from AI enemies, monsters, or hazards built into the map.
- PvPvE: Human players and game-controlled threats both pose risk. This is the most common mix in the genre.
Crytek describes Hunt: Showdown 1896 as combining competitive bounty hunting, monsters, and extraction. Embark Studios describes ARC Raiders as pairing machines with Raiders who may prey on one another. The balance between those threats is a design choice, and it shapes how tense a run feels.

Two examples compared
Hunt: Showdown 1896 and ARC Raiders are both described by their developers as extraction-style games, but they frame the run differently. The table below uses the official descriptions and platform pages cited in this article. Where a detail is not covered in those descriptions, the cell says so rather than filling it in.
| Attribute | Hunt: Showdown 1896 | ARC Raiders |
|---|---|---|
| Developer | Crytek | Embark Studios |
| How the developer labels it | Extraction shooter (Crytek’s official description) | Multiplayer extraction adventure that blends extraction-shooter tension with adventure elements (Embark’s official page) |
| Core objective | Track bosses, claim bounties, and reach extraction while competing with other Hunters | Scavenge valuable loot in a hostile world; quests and crafting resources are described on PlayStation’s ARC Raiders page |
| Threats | Competing Hunters and monsters | Machines and rival Raiders who may prey on one another |
| Group format | Not specified in the cited description | Solo or team play (PlayStation’s ARC Raiders page) |
| Platforms | Not specified in the cited description | PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, with cross-platform social play (Embark’s official page) |
| Loss rules | Not specified in the cited description | Carried equipment can be lost on a failed run (Xbox Wire, October 30, 2025) |
The contrast shows the genre’s flexibility. Hunt’s framing centers on bounties and a survival-horror atmosphere, while ARC Raiders leans on scavenging and an adventure feel with machines and other Raiders in the mix.

- Is there a defined entry point, a timed or open-ended run, and a specific extraction point to reach?
- Can you lose gear you carried into the run if you fail to extract?
- Do rival players, AI enemies, or both threaten the run?
- Do items you extract carry into later runs, crafting, or upgrades?
A game that meets most of these points is usually considered part of the genre. A game that meets only one or two may borrow extraction mechanics while sitting in a different category, such as a battle royale or a tactical shooter with a loot layer.
