Annesburg is a fictional coal-mining town in Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar’s description establishes the town’s coal trade and the difficult lives of its miners, but the available sources do not identify a specific real town as its model. It evokes the broader imagery of American coal towns; an Appalachian comparison is plausible, not confirmed developer intent.
What Rockstar says about Annesburg
Rockstar Games’ location description, reproduced in Game Informer’s 2018 preview, describes Annesburg as a coal town whose miners and families endure hard conditions. It says the town had supplied coal along the Lannahechee River for almost a century. That duration belongs to the game’s fictional setting; it is not a statistic about a real place.

The description gives Annesburg a clear identity within the game: a town organized around coal mining and its effects on working people. It does not name a real-world counterpart.
Is Annesburg based on a real town?
No specific real town is confirmed by the sources reviewed. Rockstar staff discussed how the game’s towns were designed to feel authentic in a 2018 Guardian feature, which identifies Saint Denis as modeled on New Orleans. It does not make the same claim about Annesburg, so Saint Denis’s documented inspiration should not be applied to it.

A scholarly article about the game’s fictionalized treatment of historical people, places, and events supports understanding Annesburg in the context of historical fiction, not as a documented portrait of one particular town. Rockstar’s Q&A about the earlier Red Dead Redemption describes research into real environments, including travel and photography. That is franchise-level context; it does not establish the inspiration for Annesburg in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Why Annesburg is compared to Appalachia
The comparison is understandable because Annesburg is defined by coal mining, an industry strongly associated with coal towns in Appalachia. But resemblance is not the same as a verified source: the cited material does not say Rockstar based Annesburg on Appalachia or any named Appalachian town.

- From the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption

The most accurate way to describe the connection is that Annesburg evokes the broader conditions and imagery of American coal towns, with Appalachia as a plausible point of comparison. Claims that it is definitively based on Pittsburgh or a particular town in Pennsylvania or West Virginia go beyond the evidence available here.

- Established: Annesburg is a fictional coal town in Red Dead Redemption 2, and Rockstar’s description emphasizes coal shipments and hardship for miners and their families.
- Not established: A single real-world town, state, or region as Annesburg’s confirmed model.
- Reasonable interpretation: The town resembles the broader coal-town experience, including associations readers may make with Appalachia.
