Aurora is a custom dashboard for a homebrew-capable Xbox 360: an alternative to the console’s standard Microsoft interface, with a coverflow-style game library and tools for organizing and customizing it. It is software, not a game or console model, and it does not make a stock Xbox 360 capable of running homebrew.
What Aurora does on an Xbox 360
A dashboard is the console’s main interface for browsing and launching content. Aurora replaces the familiar Xbox 360 dashboard on a compatible modified console. Its defining feature is a visual game library, where titles can be presented with cover artwork in a coverflow-style layout. The Phoenix team identifies itself as the developer of Aurora and its predecessor, Freestyle Dash (Phoenix / XboxUnity project profile).
Aurora’s feature set extends beyond the library view. Community documentation describes skins, categories, artwork, FTP support, LiNK system-link features, and plugins. The Phoenix release notes also describe importing covers, backgrounds, descriptions, and other assets from the console’s import folder, as well as running Lua applications through utility scripts (Phoenix / XboxUnity release notes; ConsoleMods Wiki: Xbox 360 Aurora).
What you need to use Aurora
Aurora is intended for an Xbox 360 that is already set up to run homebrew, such as an RGH- or JTAG-modified console. Installation references describe copying its files to console storage and launching the Aurora executable or configuring it as the preferred dashboard. That is a console-side software setup; Aurora is not itself an exploit or hardware modification that converts an unmodified retail console into a homebrew-capable one (ConsoleMods Wiki: Xbox 360 Aurora; Xbox 360 Aurora for Home Assistant documentation).

How Aurora relates to NOVA and Home Assistant
NOVA is associated with Aurora, but it is not a requirement for every person using the dashboard. A community Home Assistant integration can monitor and control a networked Xbox 360 running Aurora; that integration specifically requires Aurora with NOVA, NOVA’s web and FTP servers enabled, and local network access. Those requirements apply to the integration, not to Aurora’s basic dashboard and library functions. The integration is community-built and does not establish endorsement by Microsoft or Aurora’s developers (Xbox 360 Aurora for Home Assistant documentation).
What is known about Aurora’s release version
Phoenix’s release page records Aurora 0.7b and the 0.7b.2 hotfix. Its listed build identifiers are 0.7b.2 r1655 for binaries, r1622 for the skin, and r1622 for NOVA. The page dates the hotfix announcement to 25 June 2018; those historical release notes do not establish what the latest available version is in 2026 (Phoenix / XboxUnity release notes).

The same 0.7b.2 release page labels its package for a clean installation and warns against using it to update an existing installation, because critical file and folder changes would not be applied that way. It directs existing users to use the updater. This is version-specific guidance from the 2018 release notes, so check the project’s current instructions before installing or updating (Phoenix / XboxUnity release notes).

Aurora may suit someone who already has a homebrew-capable Xbox 360 and wants a more customizable way to browse and launch a game library, use artwork and categories, or explore plugins and network features. If you are comparing it with the stock dashboard or another custom dashboard, focus on your console’s existing homebrew setup, the library presentation you prefer, the plugins or integrations you want, and the maintenance and compatibility information available for the dashboard you choose. The cited community overview establishes Aurora’s features but does not provide a controlled comparison or a current compatibility matrix for alternatives (ConsoleMods Wiki: Xbox 360 Aurora; ConsoleMods Wiki: Dashboards Overview).
