As of Riot’s Patch 26.15 notes, published July 28, 2026, Master players could duo only with players close to their rank, while Grandmaster, Challenger, and players with Grandmaster- or Challenger-level MMR could not duo. Rules vary by region and can change by patch.
What does “Apex Duo MMR” mean?
“Apex” refers to League’s highest ranked tiers: Master, Grandmaster (GM), and Challenger. Duo restrictions limit which players can queue together in Ranked Solo/Duo when one or both players are in this upper range. Riot’s MMR-based check means eligibility is not determined by the badge shown on a profile alone.

MMR is the matchmaking rating Riot uses to place players into games; visible rank is the tier and division displayed in the client. Riot introduced an MMR check so a player whose rating had reached Master level could not bypass Apex duo restrictions simply because their visible rank had not caught up. Riot also fixed rare enforcement cases in Patch 26.6 where a duo with lower visible Apex ranks but higher MMR was incorrectly allowed.

What were the rules in Patch 26.15?
In Riot’s Patch 26.15 notes, published July 28, 2026, Master players could duo only with players close to their rank. Grandmaster and Challenger players, as well as players whose MMR was at Grandmaster or Challenger level, could not duo. The notes do not specify an exact permitted rank gap for Master, so there is no reliable universal pairing range to give from that summary alone.

These are patch-dated rules, not a guarantee of what every server or account can do now. Riot’s later regional notes describe separate restriction status in some regions, and an individual account’s hidden MMR is not publicly shown. If the client blocks a duo, the visible ranks may not explain the decision by themselves.
Why are the restrictions based on MMR?
A visible rank can lag behind matchmaking skill, particularly while a player is climbing. Without an MMR check, a player already being matched at Apex level could duo with someone outside the intended range until their displayed rank caught up. Riot described this rationale in its Patch 12.15 notes: players with MMR corresponding to Master or higher could be barred from duoing even below Master visible rank.

Riot’s Patch 26.15 rationale is also about match quality. It said smaller Grandmaster and Challenger player pools and the skill extremes within them make duos’ impact on game outcomes difficult to offset without creating larger skill gaps or less competitive lobbies. The same notes said Master duos were still affecting match quality, prompting narrower eligibility there as well.
How have Apex duo rules changed in 2026?

| Patch and date | Rule or status described by Riot |
|---|---|
| 26.1, January 2026 | Riot temporarily eased Apex MMR restrictions in most regions at the season start, allowing broad duo access up to Challenger with a lower premade limit of Diamond I. Korea and China retained stricter visible-rank limits while their usual MMR restriction was temporarily disabled. |
| 26.2, January 2026 | Riot ended the temporary easing and revised eligibility. Master could duo with Diamond I through Grandmaster, but not Diamond II; Grandmaster could duo with Master through Challenger, but not Diamond I; Challenger could duo with Grandmaster or Challenger, but not Master. Additional visible-rank and MMR restrictions applied to Diamond I and below. Korea and China remained subject to stricter policies. |
| 26.6, March 2026 | Riot fixed rare enforcement edge cases in which a duo with lower displayed Apex ranks but higher MMR was allowed when it should have been blocked. |
| 26.12, June 2026 | Riot said restrictions had been turned on with Season 2 in some regions where Apex players also received a reset, while it monitored match health before deciding when duoing could return there. |
| 26.15, July 28, 2026 | Master players could duo only with players close to their rank; Grandmaster, Challenger, and players with Grandmaster- or Challenger-level MMR could not duo. |
Does the rule differ by region?
Yes. Riot’s Patch 26.2 summary said Korea limited duoing to Diamond I and below, while China limited it to Master and below. Riot’s Patch 26.12 notes separately discussed regions where Apex duo restrictions had been re-enabled after a season reset and were still being monitored. Those statements mean the July 26.15 summary should not be treated as a single rule guaranteed to apply identically on every server.
For the rule that applies to your account, check Riot’s current ranked support information and patch notes for your server, then confirm the client’s queue eligibility. Riot does not publish an individual player’s hidden MMR or a complete account-specific explanation for every queue block.

What to check if your duo is blocked
- Visible ranks: Compare both players’ current displayed tiers, but do not assume these tell the whole story.
- MMR-based eligibility: A lower visible rank does not rule out an Apex restriction if Riot’s matchmaking system treats the account as Master-level or above.
- Server and current patch: Look for regional exceptions and newer rules; temporary settings have changed during 2026.
- Queue type: These restrictions concern Ranked Solo/Duo, not a general inability to play together in every mode.
