What Is Apple MetalFX Upscaling? How It Compares With DLSS, FSR and XeSS

Apple MetalFX lets developers upscale lower-resolution game rendering through spatial or temporal methods. Here’s how they work, which Apple GPU families support them and how to compare them fairly with DLSS, FSR and XeSS.

MetalFX Upscaling is Apple’s graphics API for rendering a game at a lower resolution and reconstructing the image at the display resolution. It gives developers two approaches—spatial upscaling and temporal anti-aliasing with upscaling—but neither guarantees native-resolution image quality or a frame-rate gain in every game. How well it works depends on the game’s implementation, the selected method and the Apple GPU.

What MetalFX Upscaling does

MetalFX is part of Apple’s Metal graphics framework. A developer can render a frame below the game’s output resolution, then use MetalFX to produce a higher-resolution image. The aim is to reduce the rendering work required for a given output; Apple described that goal in its June 6, 2022 launch announcement. That is a design goal, not a guarantee: image quality and performance depend on the game, settings and implementation.

Apple presented MetalFX to game developers at WWDC22. The session demonstrated No Man’s Sky and named GRID Legends and Resident Evil Village as Mac games expected that year. Those are launch-era examples, not a current list of games that support MetalFX.

MetalFX’s two upscaling methods

Spatial upscaling

Spatial upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution image from spatial information in an anti-aliased input color image. It is the simpler of the two approaches to integrate because it does not accumulate information across frames.

Temporal anti-aliasing and upscaling

Temporal upscaling combines information from the current and previous frames. The developer supplies temporal inputs, including motion and depth information, so the method can use changes between frames to reconstruct the output. Apple describes this as the higher-quality route, but it requires more integration work and depends on suitable input data and tuning. It should not be read as a guarantee that every temporal implementation will look better in every scene.

Apple advises developers to run temporal upscaling before post-processing. Its WWDC22 session also discusses a well-distributed jitter sequence and suitable negative mip bias. Texture-detail choices can still produce flicker or moiré on high-frequency patterns, so upscaling does not automatically remove visual artifacts.

Which Apple GPUs support MetalFX?

Apple’s Metal Feature Set Tables, dated May 21, 2026, list spatial upscaling beginning with Apple GPU family 3 and temporal upscaling beginning with family 7. The table identifies M1-series GPUs as family 7 and also lists later M-series GPU families.

These entries describe feature-family support, not a promise that a particular game implements MetalFX, or that all supported Macs deliver the same performance. A player needs both compatible hardware and a game that actually offers the feature.

How MetalFX compares with DLSS, FSR and XeSS

These names do not describe one-for-one, fixed technologies. Each vendor’s capabilities vary by method, feature and version. The official documentation explains the approaches and integration choices, but the sources cited here do not establish a controlled cross-platform test that ranks their image quality or performance.

Technology What the vendor documentation describes What to specify when comparing
MetalFX Apple’s Metal API offers spatial upscaling and temporal anti-aliasing/upscaling. Apple’s feature table lists GPU-family support for each method. Spatial or temporal mode, Apple GPU family, game implementation and settings.
DLSS Super Resolution NVIDIA describes reconstruction using multiple lower-resolution images, motion data and feedback from prior frames. DLSS is a broader feature suite. Super Resolution specifically, rather than DLSS frame generation or another DLSS feature.
AMD FSR AMD’s overview distinguishes spatial and temporal approaches across FSR versions and lists features such as machine-learning upscaling and frame generation for some offerings. The exact FSR generation and mode; “FSR” alone can refer to materially different capabilities.
Intel XeSS Super Resolution Intel’s developer guide describes integration options and recommends disabling other upscalers and temporal anti-aliasing when XeSS is enabled, to reduce possible incompatibilities. The XeSS mode, game integration and other active reconstruction or anti-aliasing options.

Apple WWDC22 presenter Kelvin Chiu, identified in the session as part of Apple’s GPU Software team, said: “MetalFX Upscaling is optimized to run best on Apple devices.” That is Apple’s characterization, not an independent comparative finding.

What a fair comparison would need to measure

A useful head-to-head test would hold the game, scene, output resolution, internal rendering resolution, quality preset, graphics settings, GPU configuration and motion conditions constant. It would identify the exact version and mode, then report image quality and frame rate separately. Frame generation should be treated separately from upscaling rather than folded into a single performance claim.
