Atomfall is a single-player survival-action mystery set in a fictionalized British countryside in 1962, five years after the real Windscale nuclear disaster. The disaster is real; the game’s quarantine zone, factions and strange aftermath are fiction. Rebellion frames the experience around investigation and discovery, with scavenging, crafting, barter, conversation and combat shaping how you uncover the story.
What is Atomfall?
Developed by Rebellion, Atomfall is a survival-action game built around a player-driven mystery. You explore a rural quarantine zone, gather supplies, craft and trade, speak with its inhabitants, investigate clues and fight when necessary. Rebellion describes weapons and ammunition as scarce, making a mix of ranged and hand-to-hand combat part of the survival challenge. The game launched on March 27, 2025, according to Rebellion’s release-date announcement.

Its central hook is the collision of a real historical event with an invented story. Rebellion’s Head of Design Ben Fisher described the game as “a game about investigation and discovery – as you try to uncover the mystery behind what really happened at Windscale, but also who you are and what you’re doing there.” That statement describes the developers’ intent; it is not a guarantee that every player will experience the story in the same way.
What is real about Atomfall’s history?
The Windscale nuclear disaster took place in 1957. Rebellion says it inspired Atomfall, which is set five years later, in 1962. The game’s quarantine-zone premise is a fictional reimagining, not a historical account of what happened after the disaster. Its villages, cults, mysticism, rogue government agencies and other secrets belong to the game’s invented world.

The official PlayStation product page likewise identifies the zone as fictional. The game’s premise can introduce players to Windscale as a reference point, but its promotional description does not establish the causes, health effects, containment or later remediation of the real disaster.
Why does Atomfall feel distinctly British?
Rebellion draws on British folk horror, pagan myth and classic science fiction, naming Doctor Who, The Quatermass Experiment and The Day of the Triffids as influences. Those touchstones help explain the game’s blend of rural unease, Cold War anxiety and uncanny mystery: a familiar countryside becomes a place of caves, bunkers, strange beliefs and hidden authority.

Rather than treating the setting as a backdrop for a conventional military campaign, Atomfall makes the landscape and its local culture part of the mystery. The result is an alternate-history premise in which recognizable British references sit alongside wholly fictional events and factions.

In an early-build hands-on preview for Xbox Wire, editor Joe Skrebels observed that the journal gathered clues and leads rather than simply issuing conventional quest instructions. That is a preview-era observation, not a claim that every objective works that way in the released game. It nevertheless captures the intended distinction: players are encouraged to follow information they find and decide what to investigate, instead of relying only on a standard checklist of assigned quests.

Exploration also means managing practical risks. Rebellion’s descriptions emphasize scavenging and limited ammunition, while conversation and barter offer ways to engage with the world beyond combat. A review in the British Army magazine Soldier (April 2025) praised open-ended discovery as a strength, while its reviewer wished for more chances to use the environment against enemies. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus about the game.
Where can you play Atomfall?
Rebellion lists Atomfall for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Its platform availability information names Steam and the Epic Games Store for PC and Game Pass for Windows PC. Availability can vary by region, platform and store, so check the relevant storefront for current access.
Rebellion announced a boxed physical Standard Edition alongside digital sales in 2024. That launch announcement does not confirm present-day retailer stock or guarantee that a physical copy is available for every platform and region. The Steam listing includes the story expansions Wicked Isle and The Red Strain, as well as other downloadable content; check the store page for the contents of a particular edition or bundle.
