Auto HDR is a Windows 11 feature that converts the SDR output of selected compatible games into an HDR presentation. It can give older games brighter highlights and a broader sense of contrast on a suitable HDR display, but it does not add the scene-specific HDR data of a game made for native HDR. Whether it looks better depends on the game, the display and its calibration.
What HDR changes in a game
Standard dynamic range (SDR) is the brightness and color range used by most older games. High dynamic range (HDR) gives compatible content more room to represent differences between dark and bright parts of an image, with headroom for intense highlights and, on suitable displays, a wider color gamut. Microsoft describes the potential benefits as brighter highlights, deeper shadows and a broader range of colors than SDR (Microsoft’s Windows HDR overview).
HDR does not simply mean turning up brightness or saturation. A display needs enough contrast and brightness to show the differences, and excessive color or brightness can make an image look inaccurate or uncomfortable.
What Auto HDR actually does
The game first renders its normal SDR image. Windows identifies a compatible game and maps that output into an HDR presentation for an HDR-capable display. Microsoft’s current consumer guidance describes Auto HDR as an automatic upgrade for compatible DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games (Microsoft’s Auto HDR overview).

This is conversion, not native HDR: Auto HDR cannot recover lighting, color or mastering information that the game never produced. It does not replace textures or art direction. The result may make highlights stand out more, but it varies by title and can look less convincing than the original SDR image.
Auto HDR versus native HDR

Native HDR is not automatically better: its quality depends on the game’s implementation. If a game offers well-tuned native HDR, start there; otherwise, compare Auto HDR with the SDR presentation rather than assuming either will win.
What you need to use Auto HDR
- Windows 11: It is the current platform to target. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; older Windows documentation should not be taken as a recommendation to use Windows 10 for this feature (Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance).
- An HDR-capable display: It must support HDR and be configured for HDR in Windows. Microsoft recommends HDR10-capable displays and points to DisplayHDR 500 or higher as a buying signal, not a guarantee of a premium result (Microsoft’s Windows HDR overview).
- A compatible graphics path and driver: The GPU, driver, connection and display must support the HDR signal. DirectX compatibility alone does not guarantee that a game will be recognized or look correct.
- A compatible game: Microsoft’s current consumer description names DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games. Older Microsoft DirectX material has used broader DirectX 10–12 wording, so do not assume every DirectX 10 game qualifies (Microsoft DirectX graphics settings guidance).
For a new display, look beyond an “HDR” label: contrast, peak brightness, local dimming or OLED black levels, color gamut, refresh rate and latency all affect whether HDR gaming is worthwhile. Certification is a useful starting point, not a substitute for evaluating the display’s actual performance.

How to turn on HDR and Auto HDR
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- If you have more than one display, select the HDR-capable monitor or TV.
- Open the HDR section and turn on Use HDR. Check that Windows reports HDR support for the selected display. Labels can vary slightly by Windows build or device (Microsoft’s HDR settings instructions).
- On that display’s HDR page, turn on Auto HDR if the control is available (Microsoft’s Auto HDR overview).
- Launch a compatible game and compare its appearance. If the game has its own HDR option, test native HDR separately rather than stacking conversion systems.
To disable Auto HDR for a single game, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game (or add it), choose Options, select Don’t use Auto HDR, and save. Restart the game so the change takes effect. Microsoft notes that restarting an app may be necessary after changing per-app graphics settings (Microsoft’s windowed-game optimization guidance).

In a compatible game, press Win + G to open Xbox Game Bar and look for the Auto HDR controls. Adjust the intensity until highlights and colors look convincing rather than neon or clipped. Microsoft documents an intensity slider, but it may not appear in every game or configuration (Microsoft DirectX’s Auto HDR update).
There is no universal best setting: the display, game, room lighting and personal preference all matter. Maximum intensity is not a quality target.

Calibrate the display before judging the result
After enabling HDR in Windows, use the Windows HDR Calibration app from the Microsoft Store. Its patterns guide you through three display adjustments: the darkest visible detail, the brightest visible detail and maximum brightness. It also offers a color-saturation adjustment; use it conservatively rather than treating extra saturation as extra accuracy.
Microsoft says the app is for Windows 11 and requires an HDR-capable display with HDR enabled. It works best with a newer GPU and WDDM 2.7 or later; Microsoft lists AMD RX 400-series or newer, Intel 11th-generation integrated graphics or newer, Intel DG1 or newer discrete graphics, and NVIDIA GTX 10-series or newer for the relevant functionality (Microsoft’s HDR Calibration instructions and requirements). Calibration can improve consistency, but it cannot give weak display hardware strong contrast or brightness.
Why Auto HDR may look wrong
The image looks washed out or dim
- Confirm that HDR is enabled in the monitor or TV’s own menu as well as in Windows.
- Check that Windows has the correct HDR-capable display selected, especially in a multi-monitor setup.
- Review the display’s picture mode and Windows SDR brightness setting; an unsuitable mode or brightness level can make mixed SDR/HDR use look poor.
- Check the cable, adapter, dock and GPU output path if Windows does not report HDR capability.
- Restart the game after enabling HDR or changing relevant display settings.
Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance recommends checking the display’s HDR setting and Windows’ reported capabilities; it also notes that an app restart may be needed after display changes (Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance).

Colors look too intense
Reduce Auto HDR intensity if its slider is available, or revisit color saturation in Windows HDR Calibration. Some games’ stylized palettes are a poor match for a stronger HDR presentation, so compare with Auto HDR off.
Highlights clip, shadows disappear or the image looks artificial
SDR-to-HDR conversion cannot know the intended HDR brightness for every element in a scene. A game’s unusual brightness curve, bloom, palette or intentionally crushed blacks can make the remapping less convincing. Compare Auto HDR on and off; if the game offers native HDR, test that implementation independently.
Auto HDR is unavailable
- Confirm you are using Windows 11 and have HDR enabled for the selected display.
- Check whether the game is recognized as compatible and uses a supported DirectX path; the API alone does not guarantee eligibility.
- Update Windows and the graphics driver, then relaunch the game.
- If playing windowed or borderless, review Windows 11’s windowed-game graphics options. Microsoft says its optimizations can enable modern features such as Auto HDR for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in those modes (Microsoft’s windowed-game optimization guidance).
To check what Windows detects, press Win + R, enter dxdiag, and press Enter. Microsoft documents DirectX Diagnostic Tool as a way to inspect system information when troubleshooting HDR support (Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance).

When to turn Auto HDR off
- The game has native HDR that looks correct.
- Auto HDR makes its colors unnatural, clips bright areas or obscures shadow detail.
- The game’s interface or visual effects look distracting under conversion.
- You prefer the game’s SDR color presentation, or consistent SDR visibility matters more to you in competitive play.
Use the per-game setting rather than disabling HDR for every title when only one game is the problem.
Windows Auto HDR versus NVIDIA RTX HDR
RTX HDR is a separate conversion feature in the NVIDIA app, with controls NVIDIA documents for peak brightness, middle-gray brightness, contrast and saturation (NVIDIA’s RTX HDR controls overview). Its requirements and game compatibility depend on NVIDIA’s current software and hardware support; check NVIDIA’s documentation for the current details.
- Start with Windows Auto HDR when it recognizes the game and you want the built-in Windows option.
- Consider RTX HDR if you have suitable NVIDIA RTX hardware and Auto HDR is unavailable or looks unsatisfactory.
- Prefer a good native HDR mode when the game provides one.
Do not run multiple SDR-to-HDR conversion systems together unless the software explicitly supports that configuration. Neither conversion method is a universal image-quality winner.
Is it worth buying an HDR display for Auto HDR?
Auto HDR alone is not a reason to buy a display marketed as HDR. If you already own a capable HDR monitor or TV, it is worth trying at no extra software cost. If you have an SDR-only display, Auto HDR cannot create an HDR presentation on it. For a purchase, prioritize credible HDR capability—contrast and brightness that can show a visible difference, plus appropriate color performance—alongside gaming needs such as refresh rate and latency. Microsoft’s DisplayHDR 500-or-higher reference is a starting point, not a guarantee that every certified screen will deliver excellent HDR (Microsoft’s Windows HDR overview).
