The internet speed you need depends on what you are doing: watching a stream uses download capacity, while broadcasting live uses upload capacity. For Netflix, its current guidance is at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K/UHD. Those are Netflix viewing recommendations—not universal thresholds for every streaming service or for going live.
What does bitrate mean?
Bitrate is the rate at which an encoder produces data for audio and video, usually expressed in kilobits per second (kbps) or megabits per second (Mbps). A higher bitrate can carry more detail, but it does not guarantee a better-looking stream on its own: resolution, frame rate, codec, motion in the picture, the source quality, and the platform’s processing all matter.
In a live broadcast, the ingest bitrate is the encoded data rate your device or streaming service sends to the platform. Your internet connection’s upload throughput is the capacity available for that transfer. When watching a stream, your device downloads the data, so download throughput is the relevant direction.
Bitrate and internet speed are related, but they are not interchangeable. An encoder bitrate is the stream’s data rate; an internet speed test measures the connection’s available throughput. A speed test result does not tell you what bitrate your video was encoded at.

How many Mbps do you need to watch streaming video?
For Netflix, the Help Center currently recommends a stable connection of at least the speeds below. Treat them as Netflix guidance for viewing, not as a promise that every device, household, or other service will behave identically. Netflix notes that several factors can affect playback quality.
| Netflix playback target | Netflix recommended connection speed | Direction that matters |
|---|---|---|
| 720p | 3 Mbps or higher | Download |
| 1080p | 5 Mbps or higher | Download |
| 4K/UHD | 15 Mbps or higher | Download |
These figures describe connection-speed recommendations for Netflix playback, not the bitrate of every Netflix title. Other services may have different requirements, and actual playback can also be affected by Wi-Fi quality, congestion, device performance, and simultaneous activity on the same connection. Netflix suggests checking a connection with Fast.com or the network check in its app.

How much upload speed do you need to stream live?
For a live broadcast, start with the streaming platform’s recommended encoder bitrate for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Then check that the connection can sustain the upload, with spare capacity for variation and other network use. A peak speed-test result alone cannot establish that an upload will remain stable throughout a stream.
YouTube’s recommended bitrate differs by codec even at the same resolution and frame rate. Its current live encoder guidance gives these 1080p examples:

| YouTube Live setting | Codec | Recommended encoder bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | H.264 | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not universal minimum internet-plan speeds. The connection must carry the chosen upload bitrate reliably; having additional headroom helps absorb fluctuations and competing traffic. Do not use a viewer’s download recommendation, or a live encoder bitrate, as a universal speed requirement for a different use.
Allow for stability and competing traffic
Keep other uploads and network-heavy activity in mind while broadcasting. Wi-Fi interference, router congestion, and background transfers can make the usable upload rate fluctuate. Where possible, test from the same device and network arrangement you will use live, and prefer a wired connection if Wi-Fi proves inconsistent.

Twitch’s official indexed FAQ gives a platform-specific example: a configured 6 Mbps bitrate calls for at least 8 Mbps of upload, reflecting its bitrate-plus-30% guidance. This is Twitch guidance, not a universal formula; do not assume the same margin is required or sufficient for every platform and setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose settings and test a live stream
- Choose the platform and output. Decide where you are streaming, then select resolution and frame rate appropriate to the content and device. Higher resolution and frame rate generally require more data and, at higher frame rates, more encoding work.
- Choose the codec and bitrate from the platform’s current guide. For YouTube Live, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations. Do not select a bitrate from resolution alone: the recommendation also depends on codec and frame rate.
- Measure upload, not download. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Run it on the connection and device you plan to use; make sure the available upload is sufficient for the selected stream and has margin for network variation.
- Run a representative pre-stream test. YouTube advises testing before going live. Include movement and audio similar to the planned stream, since a static scene may not reveal problems that appear during real content.
- Watch stream health while testing. If the platform reports instability, reduce the bitrate or output settings and test again. Change one setting at a time where practical so you can identify whether the issue is the bitrate, the network, or another part of the setup.
YouTube’s guidance also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding for its live setup. Follow the current platform documentation for the encoder and ingestion configuration available to your account.

What changes the Mbps you need?
- What you are doing: playback depends primarily on download throughput; live broadcasting depends on upload throughput to the platform.
- Resolution and frame rate: more pixels and more frames usually mean more encoded data, though exact needs vary.
- Codec: codecs differ in compression efficiency. YouTube’s 1080p recommendations above show why “1080p bitrate” is incomplete without naming codec and frame rate.
- Picture complexity: fast movement and detailed scenes can be more demanding than a static image.
- Connection conditions: Wi-Fi quality, congestion, other household traffic, and route variability affect sustained throughput.
- Device and app behavior: playback and encoding performance depend on the device, software, and service as well as the network.
There is no single resolution-to-internet-speed formula that applies to all services and setups. Start with the platform’s guidance, measure the correct direction, and test under conditions close to actual use.
Diagnose buffering or a failing live stream
If a video buffers or drops quality
- Check download throughput. Use Fast.com or Netflix’s in-app network check when diagnosing Netflix playback, and compare the result with its recommendation for the target quality.
- Check for shared use. Pause large downloads, backups, or other streams and test again. A connection can meet a recommendation when idle but struggle when several devices share it.
- Check the local connection. Move closer to the router or test a wired connection if Wi-Fi is weak or inconsistent.
- Check the device and service. If measured download capacity is adequate, the cause may be device/app behavior, Wi-Fi, or the source stream rather than the broadband plan alone.
If a live broadcast drops frames or loses stream health
- Check upload throughput and stability. Test the upload from the broadcasting setup; download speed does not show whether the outgoing stream has enough capacity.
- Compare the encoder setting with the platform table. Verify codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together. A bitrate chosen for another codec or frame rate may be unsuitable.
- Reduce demand and retest. Lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if the upload is unstable, and reduce competing uploads on the network.
- Repeat the realistic test. Include the movement and audio expected in the actual broadcast, then check the platform’s stream-health indicators before relying on the setup.
