What Is Board? The Tabletop Gaming System and Its Included Games

Board pairs a large flat touchscreen with physical game pieces for shared tabletop play. Its current listed bundle has seven games; the often-cited 12-game count was from launch.

Board is a dedicated physical-digital gaming system: a large touchscreen sits flat on a table, and players use physical pieces to play on it. It is built for people gathered around the same surface, not for portable play or a living-room TV. The headline’s “12 original titles” describes the launch-era bundle, not the current package listed by the maker.

What is Board?

Board combines a flat touchscreen with custom physical game pieces. Board describes its games as designed for people playing around a table, with competitive, cooperative and solo options. The company says most titles support one to six players, with larger groups able to team up; Boards do not currently connect to one another. Most games are described as suitable for ages six and up, while some are aimed at younger children. These are the company’s descriptions, not an independent assessment of every game.

In a January 2026 hands-on review, Wargamer described the device as a mains-powered, 24-inch touchscreen. The reviewer reported that each piece has a conductive glyph in its base, which the system uses to recognize the piece and track its position and orientation. That is the reviewer’s account of how the system works, not an independently measured hardware specification. Read Wargamer’s hands-on review.

Board founder Brynn Putnam framed the product as a way to use technology to encourage in-person play. Engadget quoted Putnam’s remarks to USA Today: “Families want to connect, but they’re competing with incredibly powerful technologies,” Putnam told USA Today. “Board is about flipping that dynamic — using tech to support real human connection instead of replacing it.” That is the company’s goal, not proof that the device produces a particular social outcome. How much does the console cost?

The $500 figure in the original headline reflects a temporary launch offer, not a verified current price. Engadget reported a $499 limited-time price and a planned regular price of $699 on October 28, 2025. Wargamer reported in January 2026 that the Founders Edition discount was ending and the price would then be $599. Those are historical reports; current console pricing and stock have not been established here. Check Board’s store for the price and availability where you live. Board’s official site.

Who is Board for?

A better fit for groups than solo-first players

Board’s strongest case is shared play: friends or family sit around one screen and manipulate physical pieces together. Wargamer found it particularly suited to families and groups, and less suited to buyers mainly looking for a single-player device. The mix of cooperative, competitive and solo modes gives groups different ways to play, but it does not make the system portable or equivalent to a conventional console.

CGE Codenames Board Game (2nd Edition)
  • Two teams race to identify their agents from a 5×5 grid, guided by a spymaster who knows each card’s identity
  • Spymasters give one-word clues and a number to link multiple cards, encouraging creative thinking
  • Teammates guess words matching the clue while avoiding the other team’s agents, bystanders, and the assassin
  • Revealing the assassin ends the game instantly, adding high-stakes tension
  • Teams may guess up to the clue number plus one, allowing strategic risks or revisiting old clues

Think about space, power and pieces

A 24-inch screen laid flat needs a table surface and a nearby power source, according to Wargamer’s description. The custom pieces also need storage, and the reviewer noted that losing proprietary pieces can be a problem. If a piece is misplaced or damaged, the game’s physical component may matter as much as the software; Board’s cited pages do not establish replacement-part terms.

Weigh the game library against the upfront cost

The included seven games provide a starting set, but variety depends on whether the separately sold catalog appeals to your group. Count optional game purchases in the total cost rather than treating the bundle as the whole library. If your priority is a broad collection of inexpensive games, ordinary board and card games may be a lower-cost alternative, as Engadget noted. They do not reproduce Board’s touchscreen-and-piece interaction.

What should buyers know about the review experience?

Wargamer reported paint wear on pieces and a piece-detection problem on its review sample. Those observations describe one reviewer’s experience; they do not establish how common either issue is. The same review noted the catalog was limited but growing, along with the practical trade-offs of the device’s size and proprietary components.
