What Is br-uxendm.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix br-uxendm.exe Errors on Windows

br-uxendm.exe is normally an isolation component of Bromium Secure Platform or HP Sure Click. A copy in the expected vendor directory with a valid Bromium, Inc. signature is consistent with a legitimate installation; the filename alone is not proof of safety. Errors commonly follow a damaged installation, failed virtualization, or Windows Defender quarantining a valid file because required exclusions are missing. Identify and scan the exact file before repairing or adding exclusions.

What br-uxendm.exe does

Bromium Secure Platform and HP Sure Click isolate risky documents and web content from the rest of Windows. Their isolation engines use several background binaries, including br-uxendm.exe. Documented installations place the executable in a Bromium or HP directory such as C:Program Filesbromiumvsentrybinbr-uxendm.exe or C:Program FilesHPSure Clickbinbr-uxendm.exe.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The process may start when an isolated application or browser session opens, rather than when you manually launch a program. Its presence therefore makes sense on a computer that has Bromium software, HP Sure Click, or an HP Wolf Security installation that includes Sure Click. It does not establish that every file carrying the same name belongs to that software.

Is br-uxendm.exe safe or a virus?

There is no filename-only answer. Malware can copy a legitimate Windows or security-product name, while a genuine file can be incorrectly flagged or damaged. Judge the particular file using three pieces of provenance: its complete path, its Authenticode publisher signature, and its cryptographic hash.

Signs that support a legitimate file

  • The path is under the documented Bromium or HP Sure Click directories in Program Files.
  • File Properties > Digital Signatures identifies Bromium, Inc. and Windows reports that the signature is valid.
  • The hash matches a file supplied by your organization’s known-good installation package or a trusted vendor record.
  • The computer actually has Bromium Secure Platform, HP Sure Click, or HP Wolf Security installed.

Signs that require investigation

  • The executable is in a user profile, Temp, Downloads, recycle-bin, or an unrelated application directory.
  • The signature is absent, invalid, or names an unexpected publisher.
  • A copy reappears after removal, launches from a changing location, or creates repeated security alerts.
  • No Bromium or HP isolation product is installed, yet the process runs at startup.

Two herdProtect records for specific signed Bromium samples showed 0 detections out of 68 engines. Those results apply only to the recorded hashes. A separate 2019 threat report assigned a different hash the label “Ransom.Gandcrab.B.” The difference demonstrates why reputation is build-specific: a clean report for one sample does not whitelist an arbitrary copy, and a detection must be investigated against the exact file.

Why Windows shows br-uxendm.exe errors

Defender quarantine or blocked access

HP says that missing Windows Defender exclusions can cause valid HP files to be incorrectly quarantined. Its documented exclusion list specifically names br-uxendm.exe and the HP Sure Click directories. If the process disappears after a Defender update, or Sure Click reports that a required binary is missing, an exclusion conflict is a plausible cause. Do not add an exclusion until the file’s path and signature have been checked.

Virtualization failure

HP lists crashes, unexpected dialog behavior, incorrect installation, and corruption among common reasons an application fails to virtualize. A damaged component, interrupted update, or mismatch between the isolation engine and its supporting HP software can therefore produce a br-uxendm.exe error even when the file is genuine.

Suspicious replacement

A malicious replacement can generate crashes, pop-ups, or repeated restarts. Treat an out-of-place executable or failed signature as a security incident first, not as an installation problem. Repairing over it or whitelisting its directory can destroy evidence and allow the replacement to run.

Collect evidence before changing anything

Use an administrator account where required, but avoid deleting, renaming, or excluding the file during the initial check. Record the evidence so an administrator or HP support can reproduce the diagnosis.

  1. Locate the running process. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select the Details tab, find br-uxendm.exe, right-click it, and choose Open file location. If the process is not running, search the Bromium and HP installation folders shown above.
  2. Record the path. Copy the complete directory and filename. Note whether more than one copy exists; multiple copies in different locations must be assessed separately.
  3. Check the signature. Right-click the file, select Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signer, and choose Details. A valid signature from Bromium, Inc. supports (but does not by itself prove) legitimacy. An invalid or missing signature is a stop signal.
  4. Calculate a SHA-256 hash. In PowerShell, run:
    Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath "C:pathtobr-uxendm.exe"
Replace the example path with the exact path you recorded. Save the resulting hash with the file version and signature details.
  5. Check installation context. In Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows), look for Bromium, HP Sure Click, or HP Wolf Security. The absence of a related product makes an unexpected executable more suspicious, not automatically malicious.

Scan the exact file safely

Run an up-to-date, full anti-malware scan before changing Defender settings. A full scan checks more than the one executable and can reveal a dropper, scheduled task, or other file that recreated it. You can also right-click the recorded file in File Explorer and choose the available Microsoft Defender scan option for an immediate targeted check.

If the scanner detects the file, follow its quarantine instructions and preserve the path, hash, detection name, and timestamp. Do not restore or whitelist it solely because another Bromium sample was reported clean. If the scan is clean but the provenance is wrong, keep the machine under investigation and ask your security administrator to review persistence mechanisms and event logs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the path, signature, installed-product context, and scan all agree that the binary is genuine, proceed with repair. A clean scan does not make an incorrectly located copy trustworthy; location and signing evidence still matter.

Repair a genuine Bromium or HP installation

1. Confirm support and obtain the correct package

Verify that the installed HP Wolf Security, HP Sure Click, or Bromium version is supported for your Windows edition and managed configuration. On a business computer, use the package and change process supplied by IT rather than downloading an unrelated executable. Keep the installation media or deployment record available in case rollback is needed.

2. Reinstall the affected component

Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the affected HP or Bromium product, and choose its repair or uninstall option if provided by your deployment. Reinstall the HP Wolf Security/Sure Click component from the organization’s approved source. Reinstalling replaces missing or corrupted isolation binaries; it is preferable to copying br-uxendm.exe from another computer, because that can create version and signature mismatches.

3. Reboot and reinitialize Wolf Security

Restart Windows after the reinstall. HP’s guidance for virtualization failures includes reinstalling, rebooting, and reinitializing HP Wolf Security. Perform the reinitialization step exposed by your HP Wolf Security console or deployment instructions; the label can differ between managed editions. If virtualization still fails after that sequence, contact HP support or your organization’s administrator with the path, signature, hash, product version, error text, and relevant timestamps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resolve a Windows Defender exclusion conflict

Only perform this section after the file has passed the provenance and malware checks. Exclusions reduce scanning coverage, so they should be limited to the documented Sure Click process and directories and approved through organizational change control.

Windows Security on a standalone PC

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Choose Virus & threat protection, then select Manage settings.
  3. Scroll to Exclusions and choose Add or remove exclusions.
  4. Use Add an exclusion to add the documented HP Sure Click directory and the br-uxendm.exe process when HP’s current instructions require both. Select the narrowest supported scope; do not exclude an entire drive or a generic temporary folder.
  5. Restart Windows or restart the affected HP service as directed by the product, then test an isolated document or browser session.

Managed computers and Group Policy

In an organization, have the endpoint-security administrator apply the HP-documented process and directory exclusions through the approved Group Policy or management platform. Record who approved the change, the exact paths, the policy version, and the rollback procedure. If Defender is centrally managed, a local exclusion may be overwritten or may violate policy; use the central configuration instead.

HP Wolf Security displays a warning that “third-party exclusions are not in place for Windows Defender, which may result in Windows Defender incorrectly quarantining valid HP files.” Treat that message as a configuration diagnosis, not as permission to exclude every file with a similar name.

Verify the repair

  1. Restart Windows after reinstalling or changing an approved exclusion.
  2. Open Task Manager and confirm that br-uxendm.exe, if running, starts from the expected Bromium or HP directory.
  3. Check the file’s signature again if the binary was replaced.
  4. Launch the workflow that previously failed, such as opening an isolated document or browser session, and note whether the crash, dialog, or virtualization error returns.
  5. Run a follow-up anti-malware scan and review Windows Security protection history for a new quarantine event.
  6. If the error persists, collect the updated event time, HP Wolf Security logs, Windows edition, product version, and exact message before escalating to HP or IT.

Choose the next step by symptom

Observed symptom Most useful next action Why
File is in the HP/Bromium path, signed by Bromium, Inc., and Defender quarantines it Confirm the documented exclusions with the security administrator, then restore or reinstall only through the approved process HP identifies missing exclusions as a cause of incorrect quarantine
File is in an unrelated folder or has an invalid signature Disconnect from sensitive networks as your incident policy requires, scan, quarantine the exact file, and escalate for investigation Provenance is inconsistent with a normal installation
Virtualized applications crash after an update Reinstall the affected HP/Bromium component, reboot, and reinitialize HP Wolf Security HP lists incorrect installation and corruption among virtualization-failure causes
No related HP or Bromium product is installed Do not download a replacement executable; scan and investigate startup entries, scheduled tasks, and the file’s origin A stand-alone copy has no established legitimate context
Error remains after a clean reinstall and approved exclusions Contact HP support or IT with logs, versions, path, signature, and hash Further changes without product-specific diagnostics can obscure the cause

Consumer and enterprise response options

The right response depends on whether you control one PC or a managed fleet. The following comparison keeps the security trade-offs visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Safety and reversibility Root-cause visibility Best fit
Manual provenance check Highest control; no system change until you choose one Explains path, signer, hash, and installation context Every case, especially an unfamiliar copy
Full anti-malware scan Generally reversible when a file is quarantined; a false positive may require vendor review Can identify related files, but a clean result does not prove correct provenance Any unexplained executable or repeated recreation
Approved Defender exclusions Reversible, but reduces scanning coverage for the excluded scope Addresses a known configuration conflict rather than proving file legitimacy Verified HP Sure Click deployments reporting missing exclusions
Reinstall and reinitialize May cause downtime and should follow a backup or rollback plan Tests whether missing or corrupt product files caused the failure Genuine installations with crashes or virtualization errors
HP or IT support Most controlled in managed environments; response time depends on the support arrangement Can correlate product logs, policy, and deployment state Persistent failures, enterprise fleets, or suspected compromise
Automated repair utility Convenient, but changes may be less transparent; review and undo options before applying repairs May identify common Windows faults, but cannot establish that a suspicious copy is legitimate Non-managed PCs after scanning and provenance checks

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not delete the first copy you find. Removing a legitimate isolation binary can break protected browsing or document isolation and make later diagnosis harder.
  • Do not whitelist by filename. Exclusions should identify the verified vendor path and process required by the current HP documentation, not every file named br-uxendm.exe.
  • Do not copy the executable from another computer. Builds, supporting files, and signatures can differ.
  • Do not treat 0/68 detections as a guarantee. Those figures describe two particular hashes, not all versions or future samples.
  • Do not suppress repeated alerts without recording them. Re-creation, changing paths, or failed signatures can indicate persistence and warrant incident handling.
  • Do not assume a clean scan fixes a broken installation. Crashes and virtualization failures can result from corruption or incorrect installation even when no malware is present.

What information to give support

A concise evidence bundle shortens the escalation path. Include the exact error text, when it first appeared, whether it followed a Windows or HP update, the complete file path, file version, SHA-256 hash, signature status, Windows edition, HP/Bromium product and version, Defender protection-history entries, and the steps already attempted. For a managed computer, add the policy or deployment identifier and whether the issue affects one endpoint or many. Never email a suspicious executable unless your incident-response process specifically requests it; provide the hash and approved logs instead.

After the provenance checks, scan, and manual repair steps, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for attempting common Windows repairs and reviewing crash information. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, and offers a free trial of at least two days by category before a subscription; results vary, and no utility repairs every crash.
