In Among Us, “censor chat” usually means Quick Chat, which limits players to preset phrases. To allow custom text, go to the title screen and open Settings → Data → Chat Type, then choose Free or Quick Chat. If that option is locked, account status or parental permission may be the reason.
What “censor chat” means in Among Us
The official setting is called Chat Type. Quick Chat only limits messages to preset phrases; Free or Quick Chat allows free-text messages as well. Innersloth describes Quick Chat as fixed phrases and as part of its approach to limiting children’s exposure of personal information in the game. Innersloth’s Privacy Policy explains this child-safety rationale.
A separate feature can filter language. In its Code of Conduct, Innersloth recommends Quick Chat or language filters to customize the chat experience. The language filter and the Chat Type setting are distinct concepts, so changing Chat Type should not be described as disabling every filter or form of moderation.
How to turn off Quick Chat
- Launch Among Us and go to the title screen.
- Select Settings using the gear icon.
- Open the Data tab and select Chat Type.
- If the option is available, choose Free or Quick Chat to enable custom text alongside preset phrases.
This is Innersloth’s general menu path in its FAQs. Menu labels may vary by platform or game build, so check the current in-game Settings if yours look different. The July 11, 2023 Quick Chat update replaced the old radial wheel with a Quick Chat Builder; that message interface is separate from the Chat Type setting.

Why the Chat Type option may be locked
Innersloth says access to chat-type controls depends on account and permission conditions. Its FAQ says the control is available to logged-in users with a full account, or to child accounts with parental permission. Its account guidance says guest mode is Quick Chat only. Innersloth’s Privacy Policy says users identified as children are placed in Quick Chat unless a parent or legal guardian permits otherwise; the applicable digital-consent age depends on the player’s country.
- Not logged in or using a guest account: Sign in through the supported account process. Guest mode does not offer Free Chat.
- Using a child account: A parent or guardian may need to grant permission through Innersloth’s supported account process.
- Still cannot change it: Check the current FAQ and account guidance for your account type and platform rather than changing a birthdate or trying to bypass an age restriction.
Which chat mode should you use?

Switching to Free or Quick Chat lets you type your own messages, but it does not mean all language filtering or conduct rules are turned off. Innersloth’s Code of Conduct describes reporting behavior that violates its rules.
