It is not presented as a consumer brokerage or retail investment product. Citadel Securities is a separate firm with a different role in financial markets, so the two names are not interchangeable.
What is Citadel?
Citadel describes itself as a multi-strategy alternative investment manager. Its stated mission is “to be the most successful investment team in the world.” The company says it combines investment talent, proprietary analytics and technology, and disciplined risk management in pursuit of opportunities across markets. These are the firm’s descriptions of its approach, not independent assessments of its results.
Citadel’s official history dates its origin to Ken Griffin trading convertible bonds in 1987. The company’s timeline records subsequent milestones including reaching $10 billion in assets under management in 2004 and $20 billion in 2008; those are company-published historical figures, not independently audited here. Is Citadel the same as Citadel Securities?
No. Citadel and Citadel Securities are “two separate and distinct financial firms, each focused on a different aspect of today’s markets,” according to Citadel Securities. Citadel is the alternative investment manager described above. Citadel Securities is a capital-markets firm. References to market making, retail order flow, or securities execution should therefore be attributed to Citadel Securities, not to the investment manager.
