Cloud streaming runs an application or game on remote computers and sends its audio and video to your device over a network. For interactive services such as cloud gaming, your inputs travel back to the remote system, which processes them and sends an updated picture and sound. A streaming proxy can help connect a client to the right remote server; in one NVIDIA CloudXR reference design, it handles signaling and session setup while the negotiated media travels directly between client and server.
What is cloud streaming?
Cloud streaming moves the work of running or rendering an application away from the user’s device. A remote computer executes the application, encodes its output as media, and sends that output across a network to a client for decoding and display. The client may be a computer, phone, headset, or another supported device, depending on the service.
In interactive cloud streaming, the connection is two-way: the client sends actions such as button presses or controller movement to the remote application, and the remote system returns the resulting audio and video. In video-on-demand, by contrast, playback does not normally depend on sending each viewer action to a remote application for processing.
How does cloud gaming work?
A simplified interactive flow is:
- Input: You press a button or move a controller, and the client sends that input over the network.
- Remote processing: The remote game receives the input, updates its state, and renders the next frame.
- Encoding: The remote system compresses the resulting video and audio for transmission.
- Return and display: The client receives and decodes the media, then displays it and plays the sound.
These stages happen repeatedly during play. Delays in input transit, game processing, rendering, encoding, return transit, decoding, and display accumulate into the responsiveness a player perceives. Meta’s engineering account describes this end-to-end sequence and examples of engineering approaches in its own cloud gaming system, including edge locations nearer to users, GPU encoding, and client hardware decoding. Those are design levers, not a universal latency guarantee.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Cloud gaming is different from remote play from a console you own. Microsoft’s developer documentation distinguishes Xbox Game Streaming, where the game runs on an Xbox server in an Azure datacenter, from Xbox Remote Play, where it runs on the user’s own Xbox console.
How does a streaming proxy work?
A proxy is an intermediary used to help establish and route a connection. Its role depends on the architecture: it might relay media as well as signaling, or it might handle connection setup while the media takes a separate path.
NVIDIA CloudXR’s reference design
NVIDIA describes a setup with three principal parts: a client, a proxy, and a GPU-accelerated CloudXR server instance. In this reference, the client opens a secure WebSocket connection to the proxy. The proxy can authenticate signaling headers, select an available server instance, and forward the signaling WebSocket. After the server accepts the session and ICE establishes the media path, video, audio, and input media can flow directly between client and server rather than passing through the proxy.

This is one reference architecture, not a definition of how every streaming proxy works. It shows why a proxy can be important for discovery and session setup without carrying the high-volume media stream itself. NVIDIA lists a dedicated service, an API gateway, or a load balancer with WebSocket support as possible proxy arrangements; it also names HAProxy, nginx, Envoy, and custom WebSocket applications as implementation examples, not universal recommendations.

Reachability and ICE
A signaling connection does not by itself guarantee that media can reach the client. In NVIDIA’s CloudXR reference, when a server sits behind cloud NAT or lacks a media address the client can reach directly, ICE is used to establish the media path, and STUN can help discover a public-facing media candidate. STUN applies in this described setup when ICE is enabled.
Network policies can still block negotiated UDP media traffic. Depending on the deployment, administrators may need to allowlist traffic, configure forwarding, or use a deployment-specific relay strategy. The right handling depends on the network and service architecture; a signaling proxy alone is not a fix for every media connectivity problem.

Proxy and server security
NVIDIA’s reference recommends a trusted, CA-signed HTTPS certificate for the public-facing secure WebSocket connection. It describes checking credentials in WebSocket upgrade headers and keeping server instances behind a firewall with access controlled as sessions are established. Whether and how to authenticate or encrypt traffic between proxy and server remains a deployment decision in that guidance; it is not a complete security standard.
What affects responsiveness and stream quality?
Responsiveness depends on the complete path, not just the proxy. Input transit, remote processing and rendering, encoding, network transit, client decoding, and display can all add delay. A proxy may matter for signaling and connection management, but it does not automatically make the media path faster or more reliable.
When evaluating a design, examine where GPU resources are located relative to users, what network routes and traffic types must be permitted, how media reachability is negotiated, and whether a relay is needed. Consider separately how authentication, backend selection, certificates, and proxy-to-server protection are handled. The right trade-offs depend on the application, infrastructure, and users’ networks; the cited engineering examples do not establish a universal latency target or bandwidth requirement.

What do cloud gaming standards cover?
ITU-T Recommendation F.743.17, dated March 2022 and listed as in force in the checked record, covers cloud gaming requirements spanning performance, management, security, networking, terminals, and other system aspects. Its scenarios include cloud game distribution, running, cross-platform gaming, and live streaming. ITU-T J.1312, dated March 2025, frames cloud gaming service infrastructure in terms of hardware resources, resource management, and game instances. These standards provide broader service context; NVIDIA’s CloudXR page gives the specific proxy and connection flow described above.
