What Is Considered the Best Type of Sword?

There is no universal best sword: the rapier, smallsword, and katana belong to different historical settings and practices.

There isn’t one universally best sword; the answer depends on the role and criteria. Historical sources describe swords made for different settings, so they do not establish a single winner across cultures or uses.

How to judge which sword is “best”

Start by defining what “best” means. Historical role, the kind of fencing or fighting practiced, and the reader’s own interest are separate criteria; a sword valued for civilian wear or a particular fencing tradition is not automatically superior in every other context.

  • Historical role: Was it associated with civilian wear, dueling, battlefield use, or ceremonial display?
  • Practice: What use or fencing system does the historical source actually describe?
  • Your criterion: Are you asking about historical significance, cultural interest, sport, collecting, or a particular technical property?

A claim that one sword is best in a specific fight, against a particular kind of armor, or in a modern match would need evidence tied to those exact conditions. The museum records cited here describe historical forms and roles; they are not controlled performance tests.

What the rapier and smallsword were designed for

Rapier: civilian wear, dueling, and fencing

The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes the rapier as a long, slender thrusting sword that became prominent as a gentleman’s weapon. Its account of an Italian rapier places sword-wearing in civilian life and describes duels between unarmored opponents. In some periods, a dagger or buckler could be used alongside the rapier; later fencing practice increasingly favored parrying with the rapier itself. Read the Met’s Italian rapier record.

That context makes the rapier a strong example of a sword associated with civilian fencing and dueling—not evidence that it is the best sword for every setting.

Smallsword: a lighter, specialized civilian form

The Met describes the smallsword as a lighter development from the rapier, linked to increasingly specialized civilian fencing and formal dress. Its elaborate decoration also reflects its place as a gentleman’s accessory, rather than establishing a universal measure of practical superiority. Read the Met’s Western European smallsword record.

  • COMFORTABLE AMBIDEXTROUS GRIP: The 8-inch ribbed handle is wrapped in faux leather for a secure, comfortable hold that works equally well for left- and right-handed wielders — ideal for extended cosplay sessions, photography, or ceremonial display presentation.

Where the katana fits in the comparison

The Victoria and Albert Museum’s overview of samurai arms and armor includes both the katana and tachi, placing these sword forms in a Japanese cultural and martial setting. That is useful context for understanding what the forms represent, but the overview does not rank them against European swords or document a universal performance winner. See the V&A’s overview of samurai arms and armor.

Comparing a katana with a rapier or smallsword therefore requires a defined question. Cultural significance, historical use, fencing practice, and technical performance are different grounds for comparison; evidence about one does not settle the others.

So which type should you choose?

For historical study, choose the form whose period and context interest you. For sport, look to the rules and equipment of the specific discipline rather than treating historical reputation as a recommendation. For a collection, display, or game-inspired interest, personal preference is a valid criterion—but popularity or national symbolism is not proof of combat superiority.

A defensible winner requires a specific scenario and evidence suited to it. The museum descriptions here establish distinct historical roles, not a cross-cultural ranking of swords.
