Cookie Clicker is an incremental idle game in which you produce an ever-growing number of cookies. You start by clicking a giant cookie, spend what you earn on machines that make cookies without you, and keep buying upgrades to push output higher. It began as a free browser game in 2013, and its developers still publish updates for it across several platforms.
How the game works
Cookie Clicker has no conventional story, levels or combat. Its core is a loop that repeats at larger and larger scales:
- Click. Clicking the large cookie produces cookies directly and is how the first few purchases happen.
- Earn. Cookies accumulate as a running total, and you can see how many you are making per second.
- Reinvest. Spend cookies on cookie producers. The official Steam description names Grandmas, Farms, Factories and Portals among them. Each producer generates cookies on its own, so output keeps climbing while you are not clicking.
- Upgrade. Buy upgrades that increase what your producers and clicks yield, then repeat with a bigger budget.
That is why the genre is called “idle” or “incremental.” Progress continues in the background, and the satisfaction comes from watching a number grow and deciding what to buy next rather than from reflexes or puzzle-solving.
Who made it
The official website describes Cookie Clicker as “the original idle game by Orteil and Opti.” The current Steam listing names Orteil and DashNet as developers and Playsaurus as publisher of that edition. If you are looking up credits, both pairings appear in official material, and they describe different parts of the project’s publishing history rather than contradicting each other.

Do not assume the Steam feature list applies everywhere. The official sources establish platform options and some Steam-specific features, but they do not provide a full feature comparison across every edition.
Free, paid and roadmap differences
The browser game is the free version, and it is the baseline the franchise is built on. Paid editions sit alongside it on storefronts rather than replacing it. An official Steam Community announcement describes future updates as arriving on the browser first, then on Steam and consoles. That statement reflects the announcement at the time it was made, so treat it as a sequence to expect, not a fixed release schedule.

Who it suits
Cookie Clicker is a good fit if you enjoy slow, number-driven progression and want something you can leave running. It is less suited to anyone looking for a narrative, skill-based challenge or a short session with a clear ending. Because it is free in the browser, it is also the lowest-risk way to find out whether the idle format appeals to you before paying for a platform edition.
