Only Up! is a 3D climbing platform game developed by SCKR Games. You control a character named Jackie as they climb a surreal, sprawling course of objects and structures toward the sky. It became a streamer favorite in 2023 because a single bad jump could wipe out a long climb, which made its runs tense to watch. The developer later removed the game from Steam in September 2023.
What players actually do in Only Up!
The premise is simple. Jackie moves upward through a vertical obstacle course made of odd, oversized objects, and the goal is to keep going higher. GameSpot describes the climb as covering “anything and everything,” and it reports that the game has no checkpoints and no save system. A fall can send a player back to the bottom and erase a long attempt.
That loop of careful movement, risky jumps and the possibility of losing all progress is the core of the game. It is often compared in coverage to punishing climbing and platform challenges. Reviews and reports from 2023 describe it as a demanding, sometimes frustrating experience rather than a polished or universally loved one, and that distinction matters when explaining its popularity.
Why it spread on Twitch and social media
AUTOMATON reported that Only Up! gained popularity rapidly from June 2023 and became a favorite among Twitch streamers and Let’s Play creators. GameSpot also reported that several well-known streamers played it.

The format explains much of the appeal. A viewer can understand the goal in seconds, see how high a player has climbed, and recognize the danger of each jump without any game knowledge. When a player falls from near the top, the moment is immediately legible in a short clip. The reporting supports this as a plausible explanation for the game’s streaming appeal, but it does not amount to a measured study of why the game went viral.
Peak player numbers and how to read them
Two 2023 reports cite Steam concurrent-player peaks for the game. They do not agree, and the sources do not explain the gap.

Why Only Up! left Steam
There were two separate events in 2023, and they should not be merged into one story.

June 2023: a temporary removal
PC Gamer reported that the game was temporarily unavailable on Steam in June 2023. The removal came shortly after digital artist Aboulicious accused the game of using a 3D model without permission. PC Gamer reported that the reason for the removal was not known, so the asset issue should be read as an allegation linked in time to the removal, not as a confirmed cause.
September 2023: the developer ends the Steam listing
In September 2023, SCKR Games announced it was removing the game. GameSpot quoted the developer’s Steam announcement in its September 8, 2023 report. The developer wrote that they were a solo developer, that this was their first game-development project, “a game I did for creativity, to test myself, and where I made a lot of mistakes.” They also said: “The game has kept me under a lot of stress all these months. Now I want to put the game behind me.” In a further statement, the developer said: “What I need now is peace of mind and healing.”

The 2023 reports establish that the Steam listing was discontinued in September 2023. They do not verify the game’s availability today, whether on other storefronts, in every region, or through third-party sellers. Do not assume that a Steam key, a download, or a resale listing works now. If you want to play it, check the current status of the game on the storefront you plan to use before you buy.

Quick Recap
What to take away
- Only Up! is a 3D climbing platform game by SCKR Games. The climb has no checkpoints, so a fall can erase long progress.
- Its popularity on Twitch and social media is best explained by how easily its tense, fall-punishing runs translate to short clips. That is an informed explanation, not a measured finding.
- The Steam peak figures from GameSpot (11,239) and AUTOMATON (over 9,000) are historical, differ from each other, and are Steam numbers rather than streaming numbers.
- The June 2023 temporary removal followed an artist’s allegation about a 3D model, but its cause was reported as unknown.
- The September 2023 removal was the developer’s own decision, which SCKR Games explained in terms of stress and a wish to move on.
