CurseForge is a website and desktop app for finding, installing, updating, and organizing mods and modpacks for Minecraft: Java Edition. Its central unit is a profile: an isolated game instance containing a Minecraft version, a modloader, mods, and configuration files. A modpack can add resource packs, data packs, shaders, maps, and other files to that profile. Choose a published pack when you want a ready-made experience; create a custom profile when you want to assemble the files yourself.

What CurseForge does

CurseForge keeps modded Minecraft installations separate from one another. Instead of replacing one global set of files, each profile stores the version, loader, mods, and settings needed for that particular instance. CurseForge Support describes profiles as “collections of settings and files required to launch a custom modded instance of Minecraft: Java Edition.”

This separation lets you keep, for example, a lightly modded survival profile and a large technology pack without manually swapping folders. You select a profile, and the app launches Minecraft with that profile’s files.

Profiles, modpacks, and mods

  • Profile: The complete launchable instance, including the Minecraft release, modloader, configuration, and installed content.
  • Mod: An individual modification that changes or adds game behavior or content.
  • Modpack: A prepared collection that may contain mods plus resource packs, data packs, shaders, maps, and configuration files.

CurseForge supports modded profiles using Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt. It can also create a Vanilla profile without a modloader. The loader is the component that loads mods and related files; it is not interchangeable between profiles.

What you need before installing

  • Minecraft: Java Edition: CurseForge profiles launch the Java Edition, not a Bedrock-only installation.
  • The CurseForge desktop app: Install and open the app, then choose Minecraft during setup.
  • A current Java installation: Java is required to run modpacks. An outdated Java version can cause installation or launch failures.
  • Storage and write access: The app must be able to download files and write to its modding folder.
  • A Microsoft/Minecraft account when needed: The normal Mojang/Microsoft launcher can be used, while CurseForge’s own launcher mode requires an account login.

Modded instances can require substantially more memory and storage than an unmodded game. Check a pack’s stated requirements and included content before installing; a large pack with shaders and high-resolution resources has different demands from a small utility pack.

Do you need to buy anything?

CurseForge manages Minecraft profiles; it is not a replacement for the game license. You need access to Minecraft: Java Edition for PC to launch these profiles. Check the current official or authorized listing for the correct Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition for PC, your region, and the current price before purchasing. A Bedrock-only installation does not satisfy a Java profile’s requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app does not turn a Java profile into a Bedrock world. If you own both editions, select the Java installation and the Java launcher account when you start a profile.

How to install a published modpack

  1. Open the app and select Minecraft. After the app starts, enter the Minecraft section.
  2. Open Browse or Discover, then choose Modpacks. Use the available filters for Minecraft version, modloader, category, and other facets to narrow the list.
  3. Open a pack’s project page and click Install. CurseForge downloads the pack and creates its profile, including the required loader and configuration files.
  4. Open My Modpacks. Wait for the profile to finish installing, then select it to view its contents and settings.
  5. Click Play. The app hands off to the configured Minecraft launcher by default. Complete the launcher sign-in if it requests one, then start the game.

You can also start from the CurseForge website. Click the pack’s Install deep link and choose Open when the browser asks which application should handle it. The desktop app then begins the installation.

What happens during installation?

CurseForge creates a profile rather than placing every downloaded file into one shared installation. It identifies the pack’s Minecraft release and modloader, downloads the listed files, and applies the pack’s configuration. The resulting entry appears under My Modpacks, where you can launch it, inspect its content, and add compatible files.

Let the installation finish before clicking Play. A partially downloaded profile can look present in the list while still missing a dependency or configuration file. If the profile remains stuck, close and reopen the app, check the modding-folder permissions, and use Repair Installation before trying repeated downloads.

Installing an exported pack

A friend or creator may provide an exported custom pack rather than a published project. In the Minecraft section, use the import option and select the supplied file or code. For a file import, the ZIP must be valid and contain a manifest.json file. A missing or malformed manifest prevents CurseForge from knowing which Minecraft version, loader, and files to install.

Importing is different from clicking a project’s normal Install button. The archive must be a complete export, not merely a folder of a few favorite mods. If the ZIP opens to another archive, is incomplete, or has the manifest buried in an unexpected structure, download it again or ask the creator for a fresh export.

How to create your own profile or modpack

  1. Open Minecraft in the app and click Create.
  2. Name the profile. Use a name that identifies its purpose, such as a test profile or a particular play-through.
  3. Choose the Minecraft version. Pick the release targeted by the mods you intend to use.
  4. Select a modloader and loader version. The choices include Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt. If you are uncertain, keep the versions the app selects as compatible.
  5. Open the new profile in My Modpacks.
  6. Click Add More Content. Search for and install the desired mods, resource packs, maps, or other available content.
  7. Click Play when the profile is ready.

You can add a mod to either a new or existing profile directly from the app or from a mod’s page on the website. CurseForge checks the selected mod’s supported Minecraft version and loader, then lets you create a compatible profile or choose an existing compatible one.

Build a profile in a safe order

Start with the Minecraft release and loader, then add the content that is essential to your idea. Launch once before adding a large batch of optional files. This gives you a known-working baseline and makes it easier to identify a problematic addition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a technology, magic, exploration, building, quest, or optimization pack, write down the main gameplay goal before searching. Add the core mods first, then resource packs, maps, shaders, and convenience mods. Keeping optional visual changes separate is useful because shaders and high-resolution resources can change hardware requirements even when the gameplay mods are unchanged.

Compatibility: why a mod or pack is marked incompatible

Compatibility is determined by two values that must agree: the Minecraft version and the modloader. A mod built for one release or loader cannot simply be dropped into a profile targeting another.

Check What must match What happens when it does not
Minecraft version The mod’s listed release must match the profile’s Minecraft version. CurseForge prevents installation into that profile, or the game may fail during loading if files are forced in manually.
Modloader The mod and profile must use the same loader: Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt. The mod is unavailable for that profile or cannot be loaded by its different loader.
Both values Version and loader must both match. If both differ, the profile is unavailable for selection.
Duplicate mod Only one intended version of a mod should occupy the profile. CurseForge warns that proceeding can override the existing version.

A reliable compatibility workflow

  1. Choose the modpack or create the profile first.
  2. Record its Minecraft version and loader from the profile details.
  3. When adding a file, verify both values in that file’s listing.
  4. If CurseForge offers no compatible profile, do not force the installation. Find a file built for the profile’s exact version and loader, or create a separate profile for the file.
  5. When a duplicate warning appears, check which version is already installed and why you need the replacement before accepting the override.

“Forge” is not a generic label for every modded installation: a Forge file is not automatically usable in Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt. The same rule applies across Minecraft releases; a file for one release is not a substitute for a file targeting another.

Choosing between modpacks

Popularity alone does not tell you whether a pack fits your computer or play style. Compare the following details on each project page before installing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision factor Questions to ask Why it matters
Minecraft version Which release does the pack target, and is that the release you want to play? It determines which other mods and worlds can be combined with the pack.
Modloader Does it use Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt? Every added mod must support the same loader.
Gameplay goal Is the focus technology, magic, exploration, building, quests, optimization, or a mixture? The theme affects which systems and progression you will spend time learning.
Included content Which mods, resource packs, data packs, shaders, maps, and configurations are included? Content determines both the experience and the amount of storage and memory needed.
Update cadence When was the pack last updated, and how frequently does its creator publish updates? Frequent updates can add fixes but may require backups or create compatibility changes.
Hardware demand What memory, graphics, and storage guidance does the creator provide? Large packs and visual enhancements can perform very differently from small packs.
Multiplayer requirements Does the pack require every player to install the same files and versions? All players need matching profiles to join the same modded world.
Distribution method Is it installed with the app’s Install button or imported as a file or code? Importing adds a manifest and file-validity check that direct installation does not.

Match the pack to your available resources

Read the creator’s memory, graphics, and storage guidance instead of assuming every pack runs like vanilla Minecraft. A small utility pack may add only a few changes, while a large pack can combine hundreds of files, shaders, and high-resolution resources. Install only what your computer and available disk space can support, and leave room for updates and world saves.

Update cadence is another practical distinction. A frequently updated pack may receive fixes quickly, but an update can alter configurations or mod versions. A slower-moving pack may be easier to keep stable. Whichever you choose, keep a backup of important worlds before accepting a major update.

Choosing how CurseForge launches Minecraft

CurseForge profiles can launch through the Classic/Mojang launcher, the Microsoft Store launcher, or CurseForge’s launcher mode. The standard launcher options keep the hand-off to the corresponding Minecraft launcher. If you want to bypass that standard launcher and use CurseForge’s launcher mode, sign in with a Microsoft/Minecraft account when prompted.

If one launcher path fails, open Minecraft settings in CurseForge and switch to another available launcher path. Changing the launcher does not change the profile’s mods or loader; it changes how the game process is started.

Playing with friends

CurseForge is sufficient for creating and launching local profiles; multiplayer hosting is optional. To join the same modded world, every participant should use the same modpack version, Minecraft release, modloader, required mods, and relevant configuration. A player who has the right theme but a different loader or file version can still be refused by the game.

Before inviting anyone, test the pack locally and share the exact profile or export. If the pack changes, tell everyone which version to install and back up the existing world before updating. Server hosting is a separate decision from local play, so verify a provider’s current support for the pack’s Minecraft version and loader if you later deploy a multiplayer server.

Fixing a CurseForge profile that will not install or launch

Work through these checks in order, changing one thing at a time so you can identify the cause.

1. Run Repair Installation

Open the app menu and choose Repair Installation. This is the first recovery step for common installation and launch failures because it checks and repairs the app’s own installation components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Confirm Java is current

CurseForge states that Java is required for Minecraft modpacks. If Java is missing or outdated, the profile may install but fail while launching, or the launcher may close without loading the game. Install or update Java, restart CurseForge, and try the profile again.

3. Check the modding-folder location and permissions

The app needs write access to its modding folder. On Windows, CurseForge’s guidance identifies several locations that can cause trouble: the desktop, a OneDrive-synchronized folder, the vanilla .minecraft directory, a root drive, and paths containing special characters. In CurseForge’s Minecraft settings, choose a simple local folder that your account can read and write, then retry the installation. Avoid moving an existing profile while the app is running.

4. Inspect the profile’s version and loader

Open the profile and compare its Minecraft version and loader with every recently added mod. Remove or replace a file that targets another release or loader. If a custom profile fails after an addition, temporarily remove the newest mod and launch again; a successful launch identifies the change as the next item to investigate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check for duplicate or conflicting mods

A duplicate warning means the profile already contains that mod. Accepting the replacement can override the installed version, and two mods can also conflict even when each one is individually compatible. Keep one intended version, then test the profile before adding another change.

6. Validate an imported ZIP

For an imported pack, confirm that the download is a real ZIP and that its top level contains manifest.json. Re-download the archive if it is incomplete or opens as another file type. An export that lacks the manifest cannot reliably describe its loader, Minecraft version, and dependencies.

7. Change the launcher path

If the CurseForge launcher itself fails while the profile appears correctly installed, switch to the Mojang or Microsoft launcher in Minecraft settings and launch the same profile again. This separates a launcher problem from a broken mod or configuration.

8. Check firewall and antivirus interference

Security software can block launcher downloads or prevent the app from writing files. Review recent firewall or antivirus events, allow the CurseForge and Minecraft components when you trust the files, and retry the download. Do not disable security protection permanently; restore normal protection after testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Isolate the last change

If the profile worked yesterday, begin with whatever changed most recently: a mod replacement, a pack update, a loader update, or a new resource pack or shader. Remove that change in a test copy and launch again. If the profile starts, add the item back only after confirming that its Minecraft version and loader match.

Keeping profiles stable

  • Back up important worlds before updating a pack or replacing a mod.
  • Use a separate profile to test experimental mods instead of changing a working play-through.
  • Update related mods together when a pack creator publishes a coordinated update.
  • Keep the profile’s Minecraft version and loader visible when asking for support; those two values explain many “incompatible” messages immediately.
  • For multiplayer, make sure every participant uses the same pack version, Minecraft release, loader, and required configuration.
  • Leave adequate free storage for downloaded updates, configuration changes, and world backups.

CurseForge in one sentence

CurseForge is a profile manager for Minecraft: Java Edition: select or build a profile with a matching Minecraft version and modloader, install its content, and launch it through your chosen launcher. When something goes wrong, start with Repair Installation, current Java, a writable modding folder, valid import metadata, and exact version-and-loader matching.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CurseForge used for in Minecraft?

It is a website and desktop app for finding, installing, updating, and managing Minecraft: Java Edition mods, modpacks, resource packs, maps, shaders, and configuration files through separate profiles.

How do I install a Minecraft modpack with CurseForge?

Open the app, select Minecraft, choose Browse or Discover and then Modpacks, select a pack, click Install, wait for it to appear under My Modpacks, and click Play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I add a mod to a CurseForge profile?

Open the profile and choose Add More Content, or use a mod’s page in the app or website. CurseForge will offer only profiles whose Minecraft version and modloader are compatible.

Why does CurseForge say a modpack or mod is incompatible?

The Minecraft version, modloader, or both do not match. A Forge file cannot be used automatically in Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt, and a file for one Minecraft release is not interchangeable with another.

Why will my CurseForge modpack not launch?

Run Repair Installation, update or install Java, check the modding-folder path and write permissions, inspect recently added mods for version or loader mismatches, validate an imported ZIP’s manifest.json, try another launcher path, and check firewall or antivirus blocks.

Can I use CurseForge with Minecraft Bedrock Edition?

CurseForge profiles in this workflow launch Minecraft: Java Edition. A Bedrock-only installation is not sufficient; use the Java edition associated with your Minecraft account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do all players need the same CurseForge modpack for multiplayer?

Yes. Players generally need the same pack version, Minecraft release, modloader, required mods, and relevant configuration to join the same modded world.

What is the difference between installing and importing a modpack?

Installing uses a project’s CurseForge Install link. Importing uses a file or code, and a file import requires a valid ZIP with a manifest.json that describes the Minecraft version, loader, and contents.

The Bottom Line

CurseForge makes modded Minecraft manageable by treating each setup as a separate profile. Choose a pack or create one, keep its Minecraft version and modloader consistent, and use My Modpacks to launch it. For failures, begin with Repair Installation, current Java, a simple writable folder, a valid import manifest, and a check for the last incompatible or duplicate mod.
