What is Cyberpunk 2077?
Cyberpunk 2077 is a story-driven role-playing video game from CD PROJEKT RED. You play as V, a mercenary who takes jobs across Night City while trying to build a reputation. The central job is a theft at Konpeki Plaza: V and their allies attempt to steal a one-of-a-kind implant associated with the promise of immortality.

The heist goes wrong. The experimental prototype ends up in V’s head, where it begins overwriting their personality with Johnny Silverhand’s. From that point, the main conflict is not simply whether V can finish a job. V must find a way to survive while another person’s identity intrudes on their consciousness.

CD PROJEKT RED describes the game as taking on “the job of a lifetime” to steal an implant that is “the key to immortality,” then building a legend in Night City while the player’s choices shape the story and the people around V. That wording captures the game’s two connected goals: personal survival and the freedom to decide what kind of mercenary V becomes.
What happens in the story?
V starts as a mercenary
V is the player character, but not a blank avatar with no background. V already works as a mercenary, taking gigs and jobs in a city where reputation can open doors and money can buy access to better equipment. The game lets you decide how V approaches that life, including the skills, perks, weapons and implants they rely on.
The opening situation changes V’s priorities. The Konpeki Plaza job is supposed to be a major opportunity: steal a unique prototype and move closer to the kind of status that can make a mercenary famous. Instead, the implant becomes a threat inside V’s own mind.
The implant creates the central crisis
The prototype stores Johnny Silverhand’s personality. As it affects V, the story asks who has the right to control a body, whose memories define a person and whether survival is possible without losing the self that is trying to survive.
Johnny is not a passive recording. His views, grudges and personality create friction with V’s goals. V has to deal with an unwanted presence while continuing to navigate jobs, alliances and dangers throughout Night City. The result is a personal conflict embedded in a larger struggle involving corporations, money and advanced technology.

Choices matter without making every outcome predictable
The game presents decisions as part of its role-playing structure. What V says, which jobs they accept, how they treat other people and how they solve problems can affect the story and the people around them. The official overview emphasizes that choices shape those relationships, but it does not promise that every decision creates a completely separate story or a unique ending.
A useful way to understand the structure is to think in terms of changing circumstances rather than a simple good-versus-evil meter. A conversation can alter an alliance, a tactical decision can change how a job unfolds and a character’s trust can influence what opportunities remain available. The exact consequences vary by situation, so the game rewards paying attention to people as well as objectives.

Night City is the game’s main setting and one of its most important characters in everything but name. CD PROJEKT RED presents it as a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour and body modification. Its neighborhoods show different versions of that ambition, from corporate wealth concentrated in high-rise districts to communities living far from the city center.
Corpo Plaza and corporate power
Corpo Plaza represents the polished, vertical face of Night City. High-rise architecture, wealth and corporate influence define the district’s image. It is a useful visual shorthand for the power structures that shape the city: technology and luxury are visible everywhere, but access to them is unequal.
The Badlands and life beyond the center
The Badlands sit on the outskirts of Night City and contrast with the dense corporate districts. The area helps show that the game’s world is not one uniform urban environment. V can move between the city’s concentrated wealth and its more open, peripheral spaces, encountering different communities, dangers and expectations along the way.

Exploration is part of the role-playing experience
The official game overview emphasizes that players are free to choose where and when to explore. That freedom supports the mercenary fantasy: V is not following one narrow corridor from mission to mission. You can pursue jobs, investigate optional situations, upgrade your character and decide which parts of the city deserve attention.
Night City also explains why the story keeps returning to corporations, money, technology and bodily modification. These are not disconnected themes added for atmosphere. They are the systems that determine who has power, who can afford protection and what happens when a person’s body becomes a piece of valuable technology.

The following characters are the key orientation points for a first look at the game. They are not an exhaustive cast list, but each one connects V to a different part of Night City’s conflicts.

V and Johnny Silverhand
V and Johnny form the game’s central relationship. V wants to remain alive and retain control of their future; Johnny brings an independent personality and an anti-corporate worldview into the same physical space. Their opposing priorities make identity a practical problem rather than an abstract theme.
Jackie Welles
Jackie is V’s loyal friend and a native of Heywood. His ambition is straightforward: he wants to make it among Night City’s elite. That goal makes him an important early connection for understanding both the attraction of mercenary work and the risks involved in chasing status.

Judy Álvarez
Judy works with braindance technology and is identified by the official character material as both an artist and a fierce opponent of injustice. Her role connects the game’s interest in recorded experience and body technology with the moral questions raised by the city’s unequal systems.
Panam Palmer
Panam is a mercenary associated with the Aldecaldos, a close-knit Nomad family. Through her, the game’s world extends beyond Night City’s corporate core and into a community organized around mobility, loyalty and life on the road.
Adam Smasher
Adam Smasher is an Arasaka enforcer whose body has been converted almost entirely to cybernetics. He is also connected to Johnny’s past, linking the present conflict over V’s implant to older confrontations with corporate power.

Build V through skills and perks
Cyberpunk 2077 uses role-playing systems that let you shape V’s capabilities. Skill and perk choices determine which approaches become more effective and which kinds of equipment or tactics fit your build. Rather than treating V as a fixed combat class, the game lets you develop a mercenary around the style you prefer.
Use weapons, hacking and implants
The official overview highlights upgradeable weapons, hacking and body-enhancing implants. These systems operate together: weapons affect how you handle direct danger, hacking provides another way to engage with threats and implants expand what V’s body can do.

Choose when and where to explore
Night City’s open-world structure gives you room to decide which jobs to pursue and when to investigate different areas. Players who prefer a direct combat build can seek situations that reward it; players who invest in stealth, hacking or ranged abilities can look for opportunities to use those strengths. The point is not that one approach is universally best, but that the game supports several ways to express V’s identity.
Where does Phantom Liberty fit?
Phantom Liberty is an expansion, not the opening premise of the base game. Its story uses a spy-thriller setup: V undertakes a high-stakes espionage mission to save the NUSA President with agent Solomon Reed.

That location adds another concentrated power structure to the broader world of Night City, but its espionage mission should be understood as expansion context rather than a description of how the original game begins.
CD PROJEKT RED’s announcement for the expansion was dated 2023. It establishes the premise and setting described above, but it does not establish current pricing, platform availability or store inventory. Those details can change and should be checked against current listings separately from the story explanation.
Why the setting and story belong together
The game’s personal and political conflicts are designed to overlap. V’s implant turns a technological promise into a threat to bodily autonomy. Johnny’s presence brings an anti-corporate perspective into V’s decisions. Night City supplies the institutions, wealth gaps and cultural pressures that make those questions urgent.
That is why the city’s visual contrasts matter. Corpo Plaza shows concentrated corporate power and glamour; the Badlands show life outside the central towers; Dogtown introduces a dangerous district shaped by its own ruler. Moving among these spaces lets the player see that “Night City” is not a single lifestyle. It is a network of communities competing for security, influence and a chance to define their own future.
What should a first-time player expect?
- A character-driven campaign: V’s survival and relationship with Johnny provide the main dramatic through-line.
- An open city rather than a linear route: You can choose when to explore and which jobs to pursue.
- Role-playing decisions: Skills, perks, implants, weapons and dialogue choices all contribute to how V operates.
- Multiple problem-solving styles: Direct combat, ranged attacks, stealth and hacking are all part of the game’s intended vocabulary.
- A world organized around power: Corporations, technology, money and body modification shape both the setting and the conflicts.
- An expansion with a separate premise: Phantom Liberty adds a spy-thriller mission in Dogtown rather than replacing the base game’s opening story.
