Deadlock is Valve’s multiplayer game in early development, combining third-person shooting and hero abilities with MOBA-style lanes, team objectives, and in-match progression. In the current playtest description, two teams of six collect Souls, buy items, upgrade abilities, and push toward the opposing team’s Patron. Access is limited to invitations through playtesters, and Valve has not announced a release date.

What kind of game is Deadlock?

Deadlock blends two familiar formats. You aim and fight from a third-person perspective, as in a shooter, but the match also revolves around heroes, lane pressure, team objectives, and progression during play, as in a MOBA. This is a plain-language description of the current playtest, not an official genre label from Valve.

Valve describes Deadlock on its Steam listing as “a multiplayer game in early development.” The listing also cautions that the game includes temporary art and experimental gameplay.

How do you play Deadlock?

A current beginner guide from DramaLock describes matches as six-versus-six. Players use heroes, collect Souls, spend them on items, upgrade abilities, and work down three lanes toward the enemy Patron. These are details of the playtest as described in that guide; they may change as development continues.

Fight while advancing your team’s position

Shooting and abilities help decide individual encounters, but eliminating opponents is not the whole goal. The lanes and objectives give fights their strategic context: teams seek opportunities to advance toward the Patron while contesting the route and resources that support that push.

Earn Souls and build power during the match

In DramaLock’s explanation, Souls are the progression resource. Players collect them during play and use them to purchase items, alongside upgrading abilities. That creates a loop in which fighting and map pressure feed into a stronger character, which can help the team continue its advance.

Is Deadlock a MOBA or a shooter?

It is best understood as a hybrid rather than forced into either category. The third-person camera and aiming make combat feel shooter-like; the heroes, three-lane structure, team objectives, and Souls-based in-match progression bring in MOBA elements. Compared with a conventional top-down, click-targeted MOBA, Deadlock puts aiming and shooting in the foreground while retaining the broader lane-and-objective strategy.

The available descriptions support this broad comparison, not a full feature-by-feature match against any particular shooter or MOBA. Since Valve identifies the gameplay as experimental, details of the current format should not be treated as settled.

How can you get access to Deadlock?

As of Valve’s Steam listing checked on October 7, 2026, access is limited to friend invites through playtesters. The listing says the game is not yet available on Steam and gives the release date as to be announced. Valve’s access wording is: “Access to Deadlock is currently limited to friend invites via our playtesters.”

These are current listing details, not a promise that access will remain the same. Check the official Steam page for the latest availability and release information.

What should beginners expect from the playtest?

Expect an evolving game rather than a finished, stable ruleset. Valve says Deadlock is in early development and that its art and gameplay are experimental. DramaLock’s beginner guide, published May 11, 2026 and updated July 21, 2026, also notes that rules may change between updates. Treat specific match mechanics as a snapshot of the current playtest, not a guarantee of how the released game will work.
