Debug Mode in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a hidden object-placement mode. It replaces your character with an object from the level, lets you cycle through the level’s objects, move the one you’ve selected, and place it in the stage. How you reach it depends on which release you’re playing. SEGA’s support instructions cover the mobile version, while the classic Mega Drive/Genesis sequence comes from a community-maintained guide, not from SEGA.

What Debug Mode does

Debug Mode is a tool built into the level code, not a separate game or a difficulty setting. Once it is active, the character disappears and is replaced by a placeable object. In SEGA’s mobile instructions that object is a ring. From there you can:

  • Cycle through the objects available in the level using the plus and minus controls.
  • Move the selected object with the movement controls.
  • Place it in the stage with the Jump control.
  • Return to the character by tapping the score area again.

Identify your version first

The same feature is reached by different routes on different releases, and the codes do not transfer between them. Confirm which version you are running before you try any sequence.

Release Input How it is reached Where the method is documented
Mobile (touchscreen) Touch controls Sound Test code entered after a No Save start and a hidden level-select screen SEGA Support, “How to unlock debug mode,” last updated October 3, 2025
Classic Mega Drive/Genesis Controller Sound Test code, then a button combination on the zone screen Sonic Wiki Zone, community-maintained guide (not SEGA’s instructions)
PC Mega Drive Classics Controller or keyboard, per SEGA’s manual Not stated in SEGA’s PC manual SEGA’s PC manual covers controls and Sound Test but does not document Debug Mode

Mobile: SEGA’s documented steps

SEGA’s support article gives this sequence for the mobile version. Each step is specific to that release.

  • Addictive high-speed action
  • 11 levels plus bonus levels
  1. Start a new game set to No Save.
  2. On the SEGA logo, tap the letters S, E, G, and A in order.
  3. Hold two fingers on the lower half of the screen while the game loads. This opens a hidden level-select screen.
  4. Open Sound Test and play 01, 09, 09, 01, 00, 06, 02, 03 in order. A ring chime confirms the code was accepted.
  5. Choose a level, then tap the score area in the upper left to open the Debug Menu. Your character becomes a ring.
  6. Use the plus and minus controls to cycle through objects, the movement controls to position the one you want, and Jump to place it.
  7. Tap the score area again to return to your character. If the pause menu appears, choose Continue.

SEGA’s article is quoted as saying: “To unlock debug mode in the game, you will need to follow these steps:”

Classic Mega Drive/Genesis: the community guide’s sequence

The classic release uses a different Sound Test code. The sequence below comes from the Sonic Wiki Zone guide, which is maintained by fans. SEGA’s Genesis Mini manual covers the game, controls, and Sound Test but does not mention this code, so treat it as a community-documented method rather than an official one.

  • Avoid obstacles and grab power sneakers to really zoom
  • Addictive high-speed action

  1. Reach the level-select screen. The guide starts its sequence from this screen, and the route to it is not spelled out in the guide’s summary, so read that section of the guide before trying the steps.
  2. In Sound Test, enter 01, 09, 09, 02, 01, 01, 02, 04.
  3. Choose a zone, then hold A and press Start.

PC Mega Drive Classics

SEGA’s PC manual documents the controls, Sound Test, and controller support, but it does not document the debug sequence. Do not assume either code works on the PC release without confirming it for that version. The manual does specify controller support: Windows-compatible controllers work if they have a D-pad and at least four assignable buttons, and a physical controller is optional.

Don’t confuse these with Action Replay cheat codes

The Libretro cheat database lists two Action Replay entries labeled “Enable Debug Mode” and “Enable Debug Mode (On An Actual System).” These are memory-cheat codes for compatible cheat tools. They are not the in-game Sound Test entries described above, and entering a Sound Test code will not work with them, or the other way around.

Troubleshooting

  • The code does nothing. Check the release first. The mobile code and the classic code are different, and a code written for one version will not work on the other.
  • You are on PC. Neither documented sequence is confirmed for that release, so a failed attempt there does not mean the code is wrong for the console version.
  • You are using a cheat tool. Action Replay codes change memory directly and are separate from the Sound Test method.
  • Results differ on your device or emulator. The steps above reflect the cited sources as written. Behavior can vary with the app build, console, or emulator you use.
