For bed-based ancient-debris mining, Minecraft’s official guide recommends digging at Y=11, Y=12, or Y=15. It does not identify one of those levels as the best or show that any one produces more debris. Treat them as practical starting points, not a proven universal optimum.
Which Y level should you choose?
Ancient debris is found in the lower depths of the Nether. Mojang’s official ancient-debris guide recommends tunnels at Y=11, Y=12, or Y=15 for its bed-explosion approach. Since the guide gives all three as options without a measured comparison, there is no evidence here to rank one above the others.
Mojang’s Java 1.18 release notes explain that there is no single height level best for all ores. That is general ore-generation context, not a specific rule or yield comparison for ancient debris.
How the official bed-mining approach works
The guide’s method is to dig a series of tunnels at one of its recommended levels, place a bed at the end of each tunnel, then try to use the bed while sheltered behind a block. In the Nether, using a bed creates an explosion that can expose surrounding blocks, including ancient debris.

- Dig a tunnel at Y=11, Y=12, or Y=15.
- Place a bed at the tunnel’s end.
- Get behind a block for protection before trying to use the bed.
- Inspect the blocks exposed by the explosion for ancient debris.
Mojang describes ancient debris as very rare and bed mining as a faster, more efficient approach than repeatedly breaking pickaxes. Those are qualitative descriptions: the guide provides no numeric yield, time, or damage statistics, so they should not be read as a measured guarantee of efficiency.
Prepare for the explosion
Bed explosions in the Nether are hazardous. Minecraft’s guide advises having full health and food, wearing diamond armor, and sheltering behind a block. These precautions reduce risk but do not guarantee that you will avoid damage. The method also consumes beds.

Does the best level depend on edition or game version?
The official sources cited here do not establish a different best level for Java and Bedrock, or confirm that Y=11, 12, or 15 remains optimal in every later version. They also do not provide a current ancient-debris distribution chart or a controlled comparison of the three levels. Use Mojang’s listed coordinates as a starting recommendation rather than a verified maximum for every edition and version.
Mojang’s Snapshot 20w06a announcement introduced ancient debris and described its place in Netherite progression; it does not settle which of the three tunnel levels yields the most.
