In Hollow Knight, Defender’s Crest is a charm that surrounds the Knight with damaging clouds and also changes a few NPC interactions. It is most useful when nearby enemies are a nuisance—such as the Infected Balloons in the Broken Vessel and Lost Kin fights—and less compelling when you need a charm slot for another purpose.
What Defender’s Crest does
The charm’s in-game description is: “Causes the bearer to emit a heroic odour.” In play, that odour appears as clouds around the Knight that can damage nearby enemies. A community-maintained Hollow Knight Wiki reference describes the clouds as recurring, with limited range and damage; treat precise behavior as version-sensitive rather than as an official specification.

When it helps in combat
Broken Vessel and Lost Kin
A guide recommends Defender’s Crest for the Broken Vessel and Lost Kin encounters because the clouds can damage Infected Balloons while you focus on the boss. Close-range enemies and Oomas
The clouds only help when enemies are close enough to reach them, so the charm is less useful if your approach keeps you at a distance. The wiki also notes that the clouds can affect Oomas in Fog Canyon; that interaction may trigger their explosions, so consider unequipping the charm there if you want to avoid setting them off.

What it does outside combat
Equipping Defender’s Crest changes some NPC dialogue and interactions. The community-maintained wiki and the guide report that Leg Eater gives a discount, Lemm refuses to barter, and Tuk gives the Knight a free Rancid Egg. These effects can make the charm useful even when its combat damage is not central to your build.
