In team play, “a DPS” can also mean a damage-dealing player or role. The context tells you which meaning is intended: a stat or comparison usually refers to the rate; a party composition or team call usually refers to the player.
What does DPS stand for?
DPS stands for damage per second. It describes damage output as a rate over time, rather than the damage from one hit. Epic Games’ Fortnite documentation describes DPS as a common way to assess a weapon or other damage-dealing device.
The same abbreviation is also used for a damage-dealing player or class. For example, “we need another DPS” generally means the team wants another player focused on dealing damage. A published US patent glossary records both uses: DPS as a damage calculation and as a class or player associated with high damage output. In conversation, look at whether the speaker is discussing a number or team roles.
How do you calculate DPS?
A simple estimate is:
DPS ≈ damage per hit × hits per second
For example, Epic’s Fortnite documentation gives a Makeshift Submachine Gun example with 19.0 damage and a fire rate of 10.0 shots per second. Multiplying 19 by 10 gives 190 DPS. That is Fortnite’s example of a weapon-stat calculation, not a guarantee that every game calculates or displays DPS the same way.

When a game or player measures performance over a time window, average DPS can also be expressed as total damage dealt divided by the elapsed time. That measured result can differ from a simple weapon-stat estimate: critical hits, reloads, missed attacks, target defenses, and other game mechanics may change how much damage actually lands during the interval.
What is the difference between burst and sustained DPS?
Burst DPS is damage dealt over a short interval; sustained DPS is damage maintained over a longer one. The distinction matters because a brief spike in damage and consistent output across a long fight answer different questions. Warcraft Wiki describes burst as damage over a relatively short period, while the Guild Wars Wiki distinguishes burst from sustained damage and notes the relevance of sustained output against high-health targets. Terminology and balance can vary by game.

When burst matters
Burst can be useful when a target needs to be defeated quickly or is only vulnerable for a short time. A high short-window number alone does not show how much damage the same build can maintain after that window.
When sustained output matters
Sustained output is more informative when damage must continue across a longer encounter. A weapon or ability that starts with a lower number may contribute more over the full fight if it keeps dealing damage reliably while a burst option pauses or loses uptime.

Why a higher DPS number may not mean better performance
A displayed DPS figure is a useful comparison, but it does not by itself establish which weapon or build will perform better in combat. Epic’s formula is a simplified weapon-stat example. The official Outspace guide identifies accuracy, distance, crew quality, bonuses, and target defenses as factors that can affect practical output.
When comparing options, make sure you are comparing the same kind of result and conditions:

- Time window: Is the figure a short burst or output measured across the longer fight?
- Reliability: Can attacks connect consistently, and are reloads or other interruptions included in the comparison?
- Target conditions: Is the target at a range where attacks land, and do its defenses reduce damage?
These factors explain why a theoretical or displayed rate can differ from damage actually delivered. For a specific game, its own stat definitions and combat rules determine exactly what a displayed DPS number includes.

How to read “DPS” in a game or team chat
- If DPS appears beside a weapon or ability stat, it most likely means damage per second.
- If someone says “pick a DPS” or asks for “another DPS,” they most likely mean a damage-dealing player or role.
- If a player compares burst DPS with sustained DPS, they are distinguishing short-window output from damage maintained over a longer period.
