What Is Easy Anti-Cheat, and Why Was Fortnite Blocked on Linux?

Easy Anti-Cheat can support Linux and Proton, but each game must opt in. Fortnite did not because Epic said the older Linux implementation could not match Windows protection; EAC Linux v2 is now planned for a Fortnite pilot, with no firm release date or Steam Deck commitment.

Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) is Epic’s anti-cheat service, and Fortnite requires it. Linux support for EAC exists, including support for Windows game builds running through Wine or Proton, but that support is enabled separately for each game. Epic did not enable Fortnite because its earlier Linux implementation did not provide the same protection as Fortnite’s Windows setup. On October 14, 2026, Epic announced EAC Linux v2, a redesigned system that will be piloted in Fortnite. The announcement does not include a firm launch date or a promise that the Steam Deck will be supported.

What Easy Anti-Cheat does

Easy Anti-Cheat is an anti-cheat platform made by Epic Online Services. A game integrates EAC so it can check the game process, the operating system environment and activity associated with a match, then combine those signals with server-side analysis. The goal is to stop or identify software that gives a player an unfair advantage, such as unauthorized code, exploit tools or tampering with protected game data.

EAC is not a game launcher, a graphics layer or a compatibility tool. It does not turn a Windows game into a Linux game. It is one component in a title’s security and online-service design, and the game publisher decides which platforms and builds are allowed to use it.

Why Fortnite treats it as mandatory

Epic’s Fortnite documentation says EAC is required to play. Fortnite’s Windows protection stack also includes EAC’s kernel driver, exploit prevention, code hardening, statistical analysis and machine-learning systems. Epic says bans are based on technical evidence rather than a single unexplained signal. For some tournaments in 2025, Windows players additionally had to enable TPM and Secure Boot, showing that Fortnite’s security checks can extend beyond the game files themselves.

That Windows design matters on Linux because an anti-cheat implementation has to establish a trustworthy environment while a protected game is running. Merely placing EAC files in a game directory does not provide that trust, and it does not change Fortnite’s supported-platform policy.

Why Linux EAC support did not make Fortnite available

Support is opt-in for every game

Epic says EAC has supported native Linux game clients since 2014. On September 23, 2021, Epic added a way for developers to activate anti-cheat support for Windows game builds running through Wine or Proton. Developers could enable that feature through the Epic Online Services Developer Portal.

The 2021 announcement was therefore a platform capability, not a blanket authorization for every EAC-protected game. Each developer still had to opt in, test its title and accept the security characteristics of the Linux path. A game can use EAC on Windows while declining to activate EAC for Linux or Proton.

The older Linux path did not match Windows protection

Epic’s October 14, 2026 explanation is explicit: the existing Linux implementation offered less protection than the Windows implementation. Many games consequently did not opt in. Fortnite stayed unavailable because Epic did not consider that older path capable of meeting the game’s protection requirements.

This is the central distinction between the two common statements that appear to conflict:

  • EAC supports Linux and Proton: true as a developer-facing capability since the dates Epic announced.
  • Fortnite supports Linux: not true under Fortnite’s previous platform policy, because Fortnite had not enabled that capability.

The block was not caused by Linux being unable to run the EAC installer. It resulted from a per-game decision about whether the Linux security model was strong enough for Fortnite’s competitive online environment.

Does EAC work with Proton?

Yes, EAC can work with Proton when the game’s developer activates the Wine/Proton support and the game’s own checks accept the system. Proton provides a Windows compatibility environment, but it cannot independently authorize a title that its publisher has not enabled.

What a working Proton integration requires

  • The game must be enrolled by its developer through Epic Online Services.
  • The game’s launcher, executable and server-side services must recognize the Proton configuration as supported.
  • The Linux system must satisfy whatever integrity checks that particular game requires.
  • The publisher must continue to treat that configuration as an allowed platform; an update can change compatibility.

Installing a generic EAC runtime, copying an anti-cheat library or changing a Proton version cannot substitute for those decisions. If the game is not opted in, the server can reject a session even when the local files appear complete. For Fortnite specifically, Epic’s earlier policy meant that a normal Proton setup was not an official solution.

Epic’s EAC Linux v2 announcement

On October 14, 2026, Epic announced EAC Linux v2 and said Fortnite would be its first live pilot. Epic described the project as a rebuild intended to close the protection gap that prevented many games from enabling the earlier Linux implementation. The pilot is planned for later in 2026, but Epic has not published a firm release date.

How the new design is different

Epic says EAC Linux v2 will not install or load a Linux equivalent of the Windows anti-cheat kernel module. Instead, it will combine security features already provided by the Linux kernel with an anti-cheat systemd service that runs only while a protected game is active, plus eBPF programs. The announced design relies on the operating system establishing a chain of trust before and during play.

Announced control What it is intended to establish
Signed kernels and signed modules Only software signed by trusted keys should be accepted in the relevant boot and module-loading path.
Secure Boot The firmware verifies the boot components instead of allowing an unverified boot chain.
TPM 2.0 A hardware-backed component can store measurements and support attestation of the system state.
Measured boot Boot components are recorded so later software can assess what was loaded before the game started.
IOMMU Device memory access can be constrained, reducing opportunities for unauthorized direct access.
Kernel lockdown integrity mode Kernel interfaces that could undermine the trust model can be restricted.
Disabled kexec The running system cannot use kexec to replace the kernel in a way that bypasses the established boot state.
Linux Security Module BPF eBPF-based security logic can enforce or observe policy through supported kernel security hooks.
Anti-cheat systemd service A user-space service operates while a protected game is active rather than installing a separate anti-cheat kernel driver.

These are design requirements described by Epic, not a guarantee that every Linux distribution already exposes them in a compatible configuration. Kernel version, firmware settings, trusted keys and distribution policy can all affect whether a machine passes the checks.

Is Fortnite coming to Linux?

Epic’s current answer is effectively yes in intent, but not yet in availability. Epic says Fortnite will be the first EAC Linux v2 pilot and describes the game as coming to Linux. The announcement does not say that Fortnite is playable today, does not specify a public release day and does not promise support for every Linux distribution.

A pilot also means the implementation can change while Epic tests it in a live environment. Epic says it will refine EAC Linux v2 based on what it learns from the Fortnite pilot before potentially offering the implementation to more developers. Until Epic changes Fortnite’s supported-platform status and publishes the required setup, reports of a successful workaround should be treated as unofficial.

Can Fortnite run on the Steam Deck?

Do not infer Steam Deck support from the 2021 Proton announcement or from the planned Fortnite pilot. Epic’s EAC Linux v2 FAQ says the Steam Deck does not currently support the required features, while Epic and Valve are discussing the situation. That is a compatibility limitation, not a statement that the Steam Deck hardware can never meet the requirements.

The announced controls create several practical questions for a handheld system:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Can its firmware expose Secure Boot and trusted keys in the way Epic requires?
  • Is TPM 2.0 available and usable for the necessary measurements or attestation?
  • Does the supplied kernel provide IOMMU, lockdown and BPF LSM support with the required configuration?
  • Can the distribution preserve those properties through updates without breaking the game’s trust chain?

Epic has not answered all of those questions with a Steam Deck commitment. A future pilot result or a joint announcement with Valve would be needed before Steam Deck owners could treat Fortnite as officially supported.

What Linux players can do now

If you want an official Fortnite installation

  1. Check Epic’s current Fortnite platform and anti-cheat documentation rather than relying on a Proton compatibility report.
  2. Confirm that Epic has explicitly enabled Fortnite for Linux or Proton; a general EAC announcement is not enough.
  3. Review the published EAC Linux v2 requirements for your distribution, kernel and firmware.
  4. Enable only the documented firmware and kernel settings. Secure Boot, TPM and lockdown changes can affect other operating-system features, so record your original configuration before changing it.
  5. Use the supported launcher and game build once Epic publishes them. Avoid replacing files with unofficial binaries or disabling security controls to get past a check.

If the game still refuses to start

  • A missing opt-in is a policy problem; reinstalling EAC will not fix it.
  • A failed Secure Boot, TPM or measured-boot check points to firmware, keys or system configuration, not necessarily a damaged game installation.
  • A kernel or distribution mismatch may require an officially supported kernel rather than a different Proton version.
  • If an update changes the trust chain, return to Epic’s current requirements before trying community workarounds.

Epic’s current Fortnite EAC installation article documents Windows 10 and Windows 11 procedures and states that EAC is required. Those instructions should not be interpreted as Linux instructions; they describe the presently documented Windows path.

How to judge Linux compatibility when Epic publishes more details

When a distribution, desktop PC or handheld is described as compatible, compare the concrete security properties rather than the word Linux alone.

Compatibility question Why it matters
Is Secure Boot enabled with keys that the system trusts? The boot chain must be verifiable, not merely capable of booting with Secure Boot turned off.
Does the machine provide TPM 2.0? EAC Linux v2 lists TPM 2.0 as part of its announced trust model.
Are measured-boot records available? Measurements allow the system state to be checked after the boot process begins.
Are IOMMU and kernel lockdown active? Both limit classes of low-level access that could undermine integrity.
Is BPF LSM available in the supplied kernel? The announced eBPF protections depend on kernel support and configuration.
Has Fortnite officially opted in? Only the game’s enrollment turns a general EAC capability into Fortnite support.
Is the specific device, including Steam Deck, named as supported? Device support can differ even when two systems run Linux and Proton.

Timeline: from Linux support to the Fortnite pilot

Date What Epic said
2014 EAC support for native Linux game clients began, according to Epic Online Services.
September 23, 2021 Epic added developer-activated EAC support for Windows game builds running through Wine or Proton, with opt-in through the Epic Online Services Developer Portal.
February 27, 2025 Epic described Fortnite’s Windows protection stack, including the EAC kernel driver and additional exploit, code, statistical and machine-learning defenses. Some tournaments required TPM and Secure Boot.
October 14, 2026 Epic said the old Linux implementation offered less protection than Windows, announced EAC Linux v2 and named Fortnite as its first pilot.

The short answer to the common questions

Was Fortnite blocked because Linux cannot run anti-cheat software?

No. Linux can run EAC-enabled games when their developers opt in. Fortnite was blocked because Epic judged the earlier Linux implementation less protective than its Windows model and did not enable the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will installing EAC files unlock Fortnite?

No. Fortnite must be officially enabled, and the machine must pass the game’s platform and integrity checks.

Does the v2 announcement guarantee a release date?

No. Epic said the Fortnite pilot is planned later in 2026 but gave no firm public date.

Does v2 install a Linux anti-cheat kernel module?

No. Epic says it uses existing Linux security features, an anti-cheat systemd service and eBPF programs instead of an equivalent anti-cheat kernel module.

For now, the accurate status is straightforward: EAC has a Linux and Proton integration path, but Fortnite’s previous implementation was not enabled. Epic is rebuilding that path and intends to test it first in Fortnite. Until the pilot becomes an officially supported release with published requirements, Linux and Steam Deck players should treat Fortnite as unavailable through supported means.
