Different products reuse the number for unrelated faults, so the number alone cannot tell you whether the problem is a Windows driver, a vehicle-radio update, an Autodesk license service, a printer setting, an accounting application, a mainframe catalog, or an HVAC pressure trip. Identify the manufacturer, model, software or firmware version, complete message, and operation that produced it before attempting a repair or buying a part.
Why “error code 20” is ambiguous
Error numbers are assigned inside individual products rather than by a single industry-wide standard. Code 20 in one system can describe a missing driver, while code 20 in another can indicate corrupted update files or insufficient storage. A search for only “error code 20” therefore mixes incompatible instructions.

The same number can also appear at different layers. A computer may show a Windows Device Manager code, while an application running on that computer reports its own code 20. A printer or vehicle may display the number on its control panel independently of Windows. The exact wording around the number is often more useful than the number itself.
Capture these details before troubleshooting
- Copy the complete message. Photograph the screen or control panel, including prefixes, suffixes, punctuation, and any secondary number. “Adlm Error 20” and “Code 20” are not interchangeable.
- Identify the product. Record the manufacturer, exact model, serial family if shown, application name, and whether the device is connected through USB, network, or another interface.
- Record software and firmware versions. Note the Windows edition and build, application release, printer firmware, vehicle-radio version, or HVAC controller model.
- Describe the trigger. Write down whether the code appeared during an update, startup, login, printing, communication, installation, or normal operation.
- Check the vendor documentation. Search the manufacturer’s support site or manual for “brand model error code 20.” Use the procedure for that exact product, not a generic code-20 list.
This information determines the severity. A device that can be safely restarted is different from an HVAC system reporting a refrigerant-related trip or a vehicle head unit in the middle of a firmware update.

Product-specific meanings and fixes
Windows Device Manager: driver could not be loaded
Microsoft’s Knowledge Base archive defines Device Manager Code 20 as: “Windows could not load one of the drivers for this device. (Code 20).” The documented explanation is that the VxD loader returned an unknown result. A mismatch between the driver and the operating-system version is one possible cause.
Use this sequence on Windows 10 or 11:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the device. A yellow warning icon usually identifies the affected entry.
- Right-click the device, choose Properties, and read the General tab to confirm the exact code and device name.
- Open the Driver tab and select Update Driver. Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install the current package supplied by the device manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the device.
- If Code 20 remains, return to Device Manager, right-click the device, choose Uninstall device, confirm, then select Action and Scan for hardware changes. Windows will redetect the hardware; restart again if prompted.
Use a driver intended for the exact model and Windows edition. Avoid forcing a package for a similar device, because an incompatible driver can create additional failures. If the device is essential and the manufacturer provides no compatible driver, check whether a recent Windows update or a hardware fault coincided with the failure.
Uconnect or FCA radio update: corrupted process or files
An FCA bulletin hosted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration describes Error Code 20 during Uconnect radio software updates delivered by USB or over the air. The bulletin states, “This is most likely caused by process or file corruption.” The head unit is expected to roll back to its base software and recover.

When the code appears during that update, leave the system alone while it performs the rollback. Do not switch off the ignition or disconnect power to interrupt the process. An interruption can leave the radio in a worse state. Wait for the recovery to finish, then follow the vehicle’s update instructions again only if the manufacturer directs you to do so. If the radio does not recover or repeatedly fails, contact an authorized service provider with the vehicle identification and update details rather than repeatedly cycling power.
Autodesk: ADLM service or installation components missing
Autodesk Support uses Code 20 for an ADLM licensing message that may read “Service not installed. Error code: <20>” or “Adlm Error 20.” In this context, the documented cause is missing installation components, not a graphics-driver problem.
The supported remedy is a clean reinstall:
- Close Autodesk applications and save work.
- Use the Autodesk uninstall process for the affected product and its licensing components. Follow Autodesk’s current clean-uninstall instructions for your release.
- Restart Windows after removal.
- Sign in to your Autodesk Account and download the installer for the exact product and version you are licensed to use.
- Install again using an account with permission to install software, then restart and test licensing.
Do not delete arbitrary licensing folders or registry entries based on an unrelated Code 20 guide. Autodesk releases differ, and removing the wrong component can affect other installed products.

Sage 50cloud Pastel: database engine, .NET, firewall, or language setting
Sage lists several possible causes for its Code 20 conditions: the Pervasive database service is not running, Pervasive is not licensed, the installation is incorrect, the required .NET Framework is missing, or Windows’ “Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support” option is interfering.
Work through the checks in this order:
- Confirm the installed Sage 50cloud Pastel version and use the support instructions for that release.
- Check whether the Pervasive service is running. Restart it if it has stopped.
- Verify that the Pervasive license is valid for the installation.
- Enable the .NET Framework version required by your Sage release through Windows Features or the installer’s prerequisite check.
- Check firewall rules on the workstation and, where applicable, the server. Allow the Sage and Pervasive components required by your network setup.
- If the service or files are damaged, reinstall Pervasive using the Sage-approved installer.
- Open Settings and search for regional language settings. If Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support is enabled and the error began after that change, disable it, restart Windows, and test again.
On a multi-user installation, coordinate service restarts and database maintenance so other users do not have the company file open during the repair.
Mimaki TS100 printer: no valid email address
The Mimaki TS100 operation manual maps Error Code 20 to “No valid email address.” This is a configuration validation error, not a Windows driver diagnosis.

- Open the printer’s notification or communication settings.
- Enter a complete, valid email address in the field identified by the manual.
- Check for leading or trailing spaces and confirm the required server settings if the printer sends email notifications.
- Save the configuration and repeat the operation that produced the code.
If the panel uses a different menu name or the code appears on another Mimaki model, use that model’s manual; the TS100 mapping should not be generalized to every Mimaki printer.
IBM z/OS catalog update: insufficient catalog space
IBM documentation uses return code 20 in a catalog-update context to indicate insufficient catalog space. The remedy is an administrative storage operation rather than a desktop repair.

- Free space by deleting entries that are no longer needed, following your site’s retention and change-control rules.
- If freeing entries is insufficient, reallocate or rebuild the catalog according to IBM’s procedure for your z/OS release.
- Retry the catalog update and verify that catalog backup and recovery procedures remain available.
Only a qualified z/OS administrator should make these changes. Deleting catalog entries without confirming their ownership can make datasets inaccessible.

Toshiba HVAC: model-specific low-pressure or refrigerant issue
A third-party Toshiba service explanation identifies check code 20 with a low-pressure trip or refrigerant shortage. Treat that interpretation as model-specific service guidance and verify it against the exact Toshiba manual before acting.
Because refrigerant circuits and electrical components can be hazardous, switch the unit off if the manual directs you to do so and arrange qualified HVAC service. Do not open the refrigerant circuit, add refrigerant, bypass a pressure switch, or keep resetting the unit to force operation. Give the technician the model, code, operating conditions, and any recent maintenance history.

When error code 20 is serious
The number itself does not establish severity. A printer email field can be corrected in minutes, while a vehicle update that is repeatedly interrupted, an HVAC pressure fault, or a catalog damaged by unsafe deletion can require specialist intervention. Treat the situation as urgent when there is a burning smell, overheating, electrical damage, refrigerant symptoms, loss of vehicle functions, or a system that cannot be safely powered down.
Do not buy a replacement device, cable, cartridge, refrigerant, or software license until the product and full message are identified. No broadly applicable frequency or success-rate statistic exists for Error Code 20; available evidence consists of product-specific documentation rather than a cross-product study.
