Gears of War: E-Day is a mainline prequel and origin story for the Gears of War saga. It follows Marcus Fenix, Dominic “Dom” Santiago and Bravo Squad during the Locust Horde’s first assault on Sera, showing how the invasion began and how the partnership at the heart of the series was forged.

The creative brief described by developer Matt Searcy was to make the Locust “the ‘monsters under the bed’” and ask how the people of Sera would respond when those monsters became real. Emergence Day is therefore both a historical event in the fictional universe and the dramatic premise of the campaign. You are watching the first encounter from the ground, alongside characters who do not yet understand the scale, origin or purpose of the enemy.

Where E-Day sits in the Gears of War timeline
Official franchise material and Xbox Wire place Gears of War: E-Day fourteen years before the original Gears of War. That is a confirmed relative position, not a complete numbered chronology of every event in the franchise. The available official material establishes the distance from the first game and the circumstances of Emergence Day, but it does not publish a mission-by-mission timeline for the entire series.

What happens during the campaign?
Three days and nights in Kalona
Xbox Wire’s 2026 launch guide describes the immediate campaign as taking place across three days and nights in the city of Kalona. This is the scope of the game’s central crisis, not a claim that the entire history of the Locust war is compressed into three days. Kalona gives the story a defined place and a short, escalating window in which Bravo Squad must survive as the invasion unfolds around them.
A three-day structure also explains why the story can remain focused while depicting a world-changing event. The player sees the first attacks, the squad’s attempts to understand them and the consequences of fighting through a city that is being transformed in real time. The official description does not provide a complete list of missions or the exact order of every battle, so individual scene-by-scene chronology should not be inferred from the broad timeframe.
Bravo Squad’s limited viewpoint
A 2026 developer feature says the narrative stays with Bravo Squad throughout. The game does not regularly jump to distant fronts or offer an all-knowing account of the invasion. Instead, players learn what is happening as Marcus, Dom and their squad learn it.

That limitation matters for continuity. Later games can refer to Emergence Day as a known historical turning point, but E-Day presents it before anyone has reliable language or intelligence for the threat. Keeping the camera with one squad preserves the uncertainty that would be lost if the campaign constantly showed the Locust’s wider strategy.
Who are Marcus and Dom at this point?
Veterans, but not yet the finished partnership
Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago are already soldiers when E-Day begins. Both are veterans of the Pendulum Wars, the human conflict that predates the main Gears of War storyline. Their military experience means they are capable under fire, but it does not mean they are prepared for an enemy that has never appeared in human intelligence.

The story is about the formation of their bond, not simply a flashback to an already inseparable duo. Searcy described the creative intention directly: “We’re telling the origin story of Marcus and Dom and their bond… this is the bond that defines the franchise.”
Carlos Santiago’s absence
The connection between the two men runs through Carlos Santiago, Dom’s older brother and Marcus’s close friend. Carlos died in combat during the Pendulum Wars. Marcus and Dom are therefore entering the Locust crisis while carrying shared grief, but they do not process that loss in identical ways.
That history gives their early partnership a different texture from the one familiar to returning players. They have a reason to trust each other, yet their relationship is still developing under pressure. The Locust invasion forces personal mourning and military survival into the same few days, making the origin of their bond part of the campaign’s immediate stakes rather than distant backstory.

How E-Day connects to the rest of the series
It is a mainline prequel, not a side story
Xbox Wire identifies E-Day as a mainline entry. Its earlier setting does not make it a detached spin-off or an alternate retelling. The game adds context to the franchise’s past while remaining part of the same continuity as the numbered saga.
The practical implication is that the game can deepen events players already know without replacing them. Emergence Day has always been foundational to the setting; E-Day gives that event characters, locations and a sustained point of view. It does not erase the original campaign’s role as the later reference point in the timeline.
It does not discard Gears 4 or Gears 5
Developers told Xbox Wire that the project supplies context that resonates through later events while explicitly stating that the storylines introduced in Gears 4 and Gears 5 are not being abandoned. In other words, moving backward in time is a way to illuminate the franchise’s foundations, not a declaration that the newer-era plot has ended.
Readers should distinguish two questions: “Where does this game occur?” and “What future stories remain canon?” The answer to the first is fourteen years before the original game. The answer to the second is that the later mainline direction remains intact according to the developers’ statement.
What the game cannot establish by itself
The confirmed material does not publish a complete chronology of every campaign, novel, character milestone or global battle between E-Day and the original game. It also does not establish that every later continuity reference will be explained in this campaign. E-Day’s documented contribution is narrower and clearer: it dramatizes the first Locust emergence, defines an early Marcus-and-Dom relationship and provides context that can echo through the established series.

Comparing E-Day with the original and later games
If you are trying to understand the difference in story position, three criteria are more useful than release order alone: the characters’ knowledge of the Locust, the state of Marcus and Dom’s relationship, and the scale of the viewpoint.

The premise is designed to work as an origin story because the characters encounter the Locust before they understand them. A newcomer can follow the immediate crisis through Bravo Squad’s limited viewpoint without knowing every later revelation.
Returning players will notice a different kind of dramatic tension. They know that Emergence Day becomes the defining disaster of the setting, and they recognize Marcus and Dom as future pillars of the series. That knowledge turns ordinary decisions and early conversations into foreshadowing, but it is not required to understand why the squad is fighting to survive in Kalona.

- For character context: play the original Gears of War afterward to see the later version of Marcus and Dom’s partnership.

Release and play options
As listed on Xbox’s official product page on October 13, 2026, Gears of War: E-Day released on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and Windows. The listing also identifies Game Pass availability, a solo campaign, two-player split-screen on console, online co-op for up to four players, Horde Siege and Versus.
Those modes are separate from the story’s chronological placement. The campaign’s canon viewpoint remains Bravo Squad, while co-op determines how players experience the campaign together. Split-screen is specified for console, and the listed online co-op limit is four players; platform and service details can change, so check the live official listing for your region before purchasing or subscribing.
The same page lists a Premium Edition containing the game and additional digital content. Edition contents and availability are product details rather than story facts and should be verified at the time of purchase. Xbox also lists a limited-edition Gears of War: E-Day Xbox Wireless Controller. It is an optional themed accessory, not a requirement for any campaign or multiplayer mode.

Putting E-Day fourteen years before the original game changes the meaning of familiar terms. “The Locust” is not yet a military category for the people of Sera; it is an impossible threat emerging beneath their cities. “Marcus and Dom” are not yet the finished team remembered by later campaigns; they are two veterans whose shared loss becomes the basis for trust. That combination lets the game answer an important question the earlier entries could only reference: what did the first hours of the Locust war feel like to the people who survived them?
