goup3.exe is not a standard Windows system file with one authoritative identity. Public ThreatInfo records group the name with GoUP and list two file hashes, bcbd603135b1b14876482b8379266f9c and 406ed0d9d821683bf8cedcd22fd52e04, both marked under review. A related record connects GoUP metadata with Boost Software Inc. and reports a valid signature for one related file, but a signature by itself does not prove that every copy is safe.
Do not decide from the filename alone. Verify the complete path, parent application, publisher signature, exact hash and scan results without launching an unknown executable. The steps below show how to identify a legitimate updater, remove an unwanted copy, and troubleshoot errors without deleting files blindly.

What goup3.exe is—and what the name does not tell you
Windows filenames are not unique identifiers. Any installer can create a file called goup3.exe, place it in a user-writable folder and give it an icon that resembles a familiar application. The name therefore cannot establish whether the file is part of software you installed, a repackaged component or an unwanted program.
ThreatInfo telemetry lists GoUP as a product label and records two goup3.exe hash values: bcbd603135b1b14876482b8379266f9c and 406ed0d9d821683bf8cedcd22fd52e04. Both entries are marked under review. That status means the public record is not a final safety verdict, and neither hash should be treated as proof that every file with the same name is malicious or harmless.

A related ThreatInfo report associates GoUP metadata with Boost Software Inc. and reports a valid digital signature for one related file. Boost by Reason describes Boost as Windows PC-optimization software and documents an automatic update function. If you knowingly installed that application, an updater explanation is plausible. It still does not authenticate a copy found in an unrelated directory or obtained from an unofficial installer.
Do not confuse goup3.exe with gup.exe, the Generic Updater associated with Notepad++. ManageEngine’s warning about updater utilities concerns that different filename and does not identify goup3.exe.
Is goup3.exe safe?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. Treat an unexpected copy as untrusted until its origin and behavior are verified. A copy becomes more credible when all of the following line up:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Its path is inside the installation directory of an application you intentionally installed.
- The parent application appears in Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- The file’s publisher and digital signature match the software vendor you expected.
- Its exact hash matches a trusted release record or a reputable multi-engine result.
- Microsoft Defender and any second opinion you choose report no threat.
- The file was created by the vendor’s normal installer or updater rather than a random download, crack or bundled package.
Increase your suspicion when the file is in %Temp%, Downloads, a random folder under your user profile or another location unrelated to the parent program. An unsigned file that claims to be from a known publisher, repeated elevation prompts, unexplained network connections, browser changes or a new startup entry are also warning signs. None of those signs alone proves malware, but together they justify containment and a deeper scan.
The available public records do not provide a complete behavioral analysis for the two listed goup3.exe hashes. They do not establish a malware family, a detection rate or a specific runtime action. Avoid claims that the file is definitely a virus—or definitely safe—without examining the particular copy on your computer.
Expected updater versus unexpected copy
| Check | More consistent with an expected updater | More consistent with an unwanted or repacked copy |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Inside the known vendor folder for software you installed | Temporary, Downloads, random profile or unrelated system folder |
| Parent software | The associated application is listed in Installed apps | No matching application is installed or you do not recognize it |
| Signature | Valid signature naming the expected publisher | Unsigned, invalid, expired in a way Windows flags, or signed by an unrelated publisher |
| Hash | Exact match with a trusted vendor record | Mismatch, no trustworthy reference or a hash that requires further review |
| Acquisition | Installed through the vendor’s normal installer or update process | Arrived in a bundled installer, pirated package, email attachment or unsolicited download |
| Startup behavior | Starts only when the parent application updates | Creates unexplained persistence or prompts for elevation at every boot |
| Security results | Current Defender scan is clean and the activity fits the parent app | Defender detects it, security tools are disabled or suspicious activity continues |
Before you troubleshoot: contain the file safely
- Do not launch it to see what happens. Leave the process stopped. GridinSoft analyst Brendan Smith advises not running an unknown EXE merely as an experiment.
- Record the full path. In Task Manager, right-click a running instance and choose Open file location. If it is not running, use the shortcut or startup entry that references it and copy the target path. Do not delete the file yet.
- Disconnect only when symptoms justify it. If you see unexplained network traffic, account changes or security-tool interference, disconnect from the internet while preserving evidence. Do not disconnect merely because a legitimate updater exists.
- Save work and create a restore point. Search Windows for Create a restore point, open it, select the system drive, choose Create and give the point a descriptive name. A restore point is not a backup of personal files, so keep important documents backed up separately.
How to inspect goup3.exe without running it
1. Check Properties and version information
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- On General, note its location, size, creation date and whether Windows shows an unblock option.
- On Details, record Product name, Company, File description, Original filename and version fields. Missing or contradictory metadata is a reason to investigate further, not a conclusive detection.
- Open Digital Signatures. Select the signer, choose Details and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. A valid signature supports publisher identity; it does not prove that the file was obtained safely or that the signed software is desirable.
You can collect the same signature result in PowerShell without executing the program:

Get-AuthenticodeSignature -FilePath "C:fullpathgoup3.exe"
Replace the path with the one you recorded. The Status and SignerCertificate fields are evidence to compare with the expected vendor, not a substitute for scanning.
2. Identify the parent application
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for GoUP, Boost or another application whose installation directory contains the file. Check Task Manager > Startup apps for an entry that points to the same path. If you never installed the parent software, treat the file as suspicious and continue with the scan steps instead of opening it.
Also inspect Task Scheduler: press Win, type Task Scheduler, open Task Scheduler Library and review tasks whose Actions point to goup3.exe. Do not disable every updater indiscriminately. Record the task name, trigger and target, then disable only an entry you can tie to the questionable file while you investigate.
3. Calculate an exact hash
Use PowerShell to calculate a SHA-256 value for your copy:
Get-FileHash -Path "C:fullpathgoup3.exe" -Algorithm SHA256
Compare the result with a trusted release record or a reputable multi-engine service. ThreatInfo lists two goup3.exe hash strings under review; the filename and icon are not enough to decide whether your file is one of those samples. Keep the entire value, including leading zeroes, when comparing.
Run Microsoft Defender before deleting anything
Update security intelligence
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection and choose Protection updates > Check for updates.
- Return to Virus & threat protection and confirm that real-time protection is enabled unless your organization manages it centrally.
Microsoft recommends downloading apps only from trusted sources and being selective about what you install. A current security engine gives the scan the best available definitions for the system at that moment.

Run a full scan
- In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan, then select Scan now.
- Leave the computer powered on until the scan completes. Review detected items in Protection history.
If Defender identifies goup3.exe, choose Quarantine or Remove as offered. Do not restore it merely because an application stops working; first verify the parent software and obtain a clean installer from its normal vendor source.
Use Microsoft Defender Offline when persistence remains
For repeated startup prompts, tampering with security settings or a detection that returns after reboot, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan and choose Scan now. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment, so save work first and close applications. After Windows starts again, check Protection history for the result.
Remove an unwanted goup3.exe installation
Uninstall the parent program first
If the file belongs to software you do not need, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the parent application and choose Uninstall. Follow the vendor’s removal wizard, restart Windows if requested and run another Defender scan. Removing the parent application is safer than deleting one executable while leaving its updater, scheduled task or service behind.

When the uninstaller finishes, revisit the recorded folder. If it remains and contains only the unwanted program’s files, use File Explorer to remove the folder. Do not take ownership of protected Windows directories or delete similarly named DLLs simply because they look related. If Windows says a file is in use, restart, scan again and check Task Manager and Task Scheduler before attempting removal.
Disable unexplained startup persistence
- Open Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Select an entry that points to the recorded goup3.exe path and choose Disable while you investigate.
- Open Task Scheduler and disable a matching task only after recording its details.
- Restart and confirm that the prompt or process no longer returns.
Do not use a registry cleaner or delete random Run keys as a first step. If a startup item has no recognizable path, preserve its details and let the offline scan or a qualified technician assess it.
Fix errors when the file is legitimate
A legitimate updater can still fail because of a damaged installation, blocked permissions, an incomplete update or a missing dependency. First verify that the file is in the expected vendor folder and that the parent application is known. Then work through these repairs in order.

Repair or reinstall the parent application
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and select the associated application.
- If Windows offers Advanced options, use Repair before Reset; reset can remove local settings or data.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows and download a fresh installer from the vendor’s official site. Avoid third-party repacks.
- Install with an administrator account only when the vendor’s installer requests it, then check for updates through the application’s own interface.
Do not download a replacement goup3.exe from a DLL or EXE collection site. Replacing one file without confirming the package can introduce a different, tampered executable.

Check Windows system integrity when the error implicates system components
If the message also reports damaged Windows components, open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthsfc /scannow
Allow each command to finish, restart and test the parent application again. These commands repair Windows components; they do not validate the publisher or safety of goup3.exe itself.
Resolve permissions and compatibility carefully
If Windows reports Access denied, confirm that the account has permission to use the parent application and that security software has not quarantined a required component. Do not permanently disable Defender or grant broad permissions to an unknown file. For an older, verified application, right-click its shortcut, choose Properties > Compatibility and use the compatibility troubleshooter; avoid applying compatibility settings to an unverified executable.
Use Event Viewer to capture repeat failures
- Press
Win+Xand open Event Viewer. - Expand Windows Logs > Application.
- Filter or review entries at the time of the failure, noting the faulting application, faulting module, exception code and path.
- Record the details for the application vendor or a technician rather than downloading a replacement module based on the filename alone.
Event Viewer can identify which component crashed, but it cannot by itself prove that the component is safe.

“goup3.exe was not found” or “missing”
This usually means a shortcut, startup entry or scheduled task still points to a file removed during an incomplete uninstall or a security quarantine. Confirm the path in the error, check Installed apps and Startup apps, and remove the orphaned parent application or startup reference. If you still use the associated program, reinstall it from its official source instead of copying a standalone EXE.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
“Application error,” crash or repeated restart
Verify the signature and hash first, then repair or reinstall the parent program. Check Event Viewer for the faulting module and run a full Defender scan. If the crash began immediately after an update, use the application’s supported rollback or reinstall process; do not substitute an older executable downloaded from an unknown site.
Repeated User Account Control prompts
Confirm which path requests elevation and which scheduled task or startup item launches it. A known updater may request elevation during installation, but a file in a temporary or user-profile folder that prompts at every boot deserves containment, an offline scan and removal of the parent program if it is unwanted.
High CPU, memory or disk use
In Task Manager > Processes, right-click the process and choose Open file location before ending it. Record the path and parent application, then scan. The available public records do not establish that goup3.exe itself causes a particular resource-usage pattern, so diagnose the specific process rather than assuming the filename explains the slowdown.
When to escalate instead of experimenting
Stop manual experimentation and seek qualified help when any of these conditions apply:
- Defender or Defender Offline reports a threat that returns after removal.
- Security tools are disabled, browser settings change without permission or unknown accounts appear.
- The file is protected by a service or scheduled task you cannot identify.
- Business, school or shared gaming PCs are involved and you may destroy evidence by deleting files.
- You cannot establish the parent application, publisher or acquisition source.
Preserve the path, Properties details, signature result, hash, scan history and relevant Event Viewer entries. Do not upload confidential files to an analysis service without checking its privacy terms and your organization’s policy.
Quick Recap
A concise decision path
- Recognize it: record the complete path without launching the file.
- Relate it: identify the installed application, startup entry or scheduled task that references it.
- Validate it: inspect metadata, signature and an exact hash; remember that a valid signature is supporting evidence, not a guarantee.
- Scan it: update Microsoft Defender, run a full scan and use Defender Offline if persistence or tampering remains.
- Remove or repair: uninstall unwanted parent software; repair or reinstall a verified application from its official source.
- Escalate: obtain professional assistance when symptoms persist or the system shows signs of broader compromise.
