A copy from an unrelated folder, an unsigned executable, or a file obtained outside a GlassWire installation needs verification before you run or delete it.
Use the file path, digital signature, and Windows Security results together. Scan before deleting, do not create an antivirus exclusion merely to silence an alert, and reinstall GlassWire only from its official source if the program is wanted but damaged. The steps below also cover removing the parent application when you did not intend to install it.

What gwinstst.exe does
Its documented GlassWire role
GlassWire’s official FAQ describes gwinstst.exe as a component used briefly during installation to report how many installations the company is receiving. In practical terms, it is an install-count telemetry process rather than a Windows system file. Its expected activity should be short-lived and associated with installing or updating GlassWire.
The filename is not an identity check
Windows identifies an executable by its location, metadata, signature, and behavior—not by the characters before .exe. Malware can be given a familiar filename, and a damaged or copied file can retain the same name while no longer belonging to the original installer. Treat a gwinstst.exe found in a download, temporary archive, email attachment, or unrelated application folder as untrusted until you verify it.

Is gwinstst.exe safe?
A gwinstst.exe that arrived with an intentional, official GlassWire installation is plausibly legitimate. You still need to check the specific file on your computer. A safe conclusion requires matching several clues:
- The file location is inside the GlassWire installation you recognize.
- The file has a valid digital signature from the expected publisher, with Windows reporting that the signature is valid.
- Windows Security does not identify the file as malware or potentially unwanted software.
- The process appears only during the expected installation or update activity, rather than launching from an unrelated location.
No single clue is conclusive. A familiar path can be imitated, signatures can be absent from suspicious copies, and a clean first scan does not establish that a file came from GlassWire. Keep the evidence together before deciding whether to keep, quarantine, or remove it.
How to check the file before changing anything
1. Record the full path
If the process is running, open Task Manager, locate the gwinstst.exe entry, and use the option to open its file location. If Windows Security displayed an alert, open the alert details and note the path shown there. Copy the complete path somewhere safe before closing the window. The purpose is to distinguish a file inside the GlassWire installation from one launched from a download, temporary, user-profile, or otherwise unexpected directory.

Do not delete the executable while you are still trying to identify it. Preserving the path and filename gives you information to compare with the installed application and to include in a malware submission if necessary.

2. Inspect the digital signature
In File Explorer, right-click the executable, choose Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab when it is present. Select the signature and choose Details to see whether Windows reports that it is valid and which publisher signed it. A missing, invalid, or unexpected signature is a reason to pause, not proof by itself that the file is malicious. Combine this result with the path and a security scan.
3. Scan with Windows Security
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Start with Quick scan. If the alert returns, the process continues to appear from an unexplained location, or you need a more complete check, select Scan options and run Full scan. Microsoft describes a full scan as checking every file and program on the device.
For suspected persistence—especially when a detection returns after removal—choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads, which can prevent a running process from hiding or immediately recreating itself. Save work first and follow the restart prompt. Review the result in Protection history, where Windows Security records detected, quarantined, and allowed items.

Use Protection history to determine what Windows actually did. A detection may be quarantined, removed, blocked, or allowed; those outcomes are different from merely seeing a warning. Follow the action Windows recommends for a confirmed threat, and do not restore an item unless you have verified its provenance.

Why gwinstst.exe may be running
Expected installation activity
If you have just installed or updated GlassWire, a brief gwinstst.exe launch is consistent with GlassWire’s documented install-count telemetry. It should not need to remain a continuously active Windows component after that installation event.
An unwanted or bundled installation
If you do not recognize GlassWire, the executable may have arrived with software you recently installed or with a download you did not intend to keep. The filename alone cannot tell you whether the parent program is wanted. Check the installed-app list and the date each application was added.
A renamed or unrelated executable
A copy carrying the same name can be placed anywhere by another program. An unexpected path, an invalid signature, or a Defender detection outweighs the reassuring appearance of the filename. Handle it as an untrusted file until scanning and provenance checks provide a clearer answer.

Manual steps to remove unwanted software
1. Uninstall GlassWire when you did not choose it
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the wording can vary slightly by Windows edition). Sort the list by install date and look for GlassWire or another unfamiliar application installed at the same time as the executable. Select the app and choose Uninstall. Complete the vendor uninstaller, then restart if Windows requests it.

Do not uninstall only the executable from its folder while leaving the parent application registered. Removing the application through Settings gives Windows a chance to remove its services, shortcuts, and related components cleanly. Afterward, run another Quick scan and check Protection history.
2. Review browser add-ons
Microsoft advises checking browser add-ons when unwanted software is suspected. Open each browser you use, review its extensions or add-ons, and remove anything you did not install deliberately or cannot identify. Restart the browser and watch for the same alert or unexpected redirects. This step addresses a possible delivery route; it does not by itself prove what gwinstst.exe is.
3. Check for a recurring launch
After uninstalling an unwanted parent application and scanning, restart Windows normally. If gwinstst.exe appears again, record the new path and the exact time it launches. Repeating from a different path suggests that another installed program or scheduled mechanism is involved, so do not assume that deleting the first copy solved the problem. Run Full scan or Offline scan and review Protection history before making further changes.
Repair errors when you intentionally use GlassWire
When Windows reports a missing or damaged file
The available authoritative information does not provide a dedicated gwinstst.exe error-code catalogue or a version-specific repair matrix. Therefore, an error message cannot be mapped reliably to one universal registry edit or download. Start by verifying that GlassWire is installed, then scan the existing files. If the installation is damaged, the dependable manual remedy is to uninstall the existing GlassWire copy and install a fresh package obtained from GlassWire’s official website.

Reinstall from the official source
- Save any GlassWire settings or information you need.
- Run Windows Security Quick scan, and use Full or Offline scan if the alert or unexplained behavior remains.
- Uninstall the existing GlassWire installation from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows if requested and remove only leftover files that you can positively identify as part of that uninstalled application.
- Download a new installer from GlassWire’s official site. Do not obtain a standalone gwinstst.exe from a file-sharing service or a DLL-download website.
- Scan the downloaded installer before opening it, then install GlassWire and observe whether the error is gone.
This process replaces the parent application rather than trying to repair one telemetry executable in isolation. If the same warning returns immediately after a clean, official reinstall, stop and investigate the alert details instead of repeatedly reinstalling.
Use Microsoft’s supplementary malware tool when appropriate
Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) is designed to target prevalent malware families. It complements, but does not replace, a full antimalware product and normal Windows Security protection. Microsoft’s download information lists MSRT version 5.142, published June 9, 2026. Results are logged at %windir%debugmrt.log.
Run MSRT when you want a second Microsoft-provided check after the standard Windows Security scan, particularly if you suspect a broader unwanted-software problem. Its scope is limited: a clean MSRT result does not certify that every unusual executable is safe, and it is not a substitute for Quick, Full, or Offline scans.

If Windows Security detects the file but you believe it may be a false positive, or if the file is blocked without a clear explanation, use Microsoft’s Security Intelligence submission portal. The portal accepts submissions categorized as malware, incorrectly detected malware, potentially unwanted application, incorrectly detected potentially unwanted application, or clean but blocked.
Include where the file came from, its full path, the publisher and signature status, and what effect the detection had. Do not upload a file obtained from an unknown source to other random scanning sites or follow instructions that ask you to disable protection first. A submission gives Microsoft the context needed to evaluate both malicious files and mistaken detections.
Should you add a Windows Security exclusion?
Usually, no. Microsoft warns that adding an exclusion means Microsoft Defender Antivirus will no longer check the excluded file or process in real time, which can leave the device and data vulnerable. An exclusion does not repair gwinstst.exe, validate its publisher, or explain why it launched.
If a trusted administrator has a documented reason for an exclusion, use the narrowest possible full path rather than a broad folder or file-type rule, and keep a record so it can be removed later. Never create an exclusion simply because a warning is inconvenient or because an internet post claims the file is harmless.
