Halls of Torment is a single-player horde-survival roguelite with a pre-rendered look inspired by late-1990s role-playing games. Its official Steam page describes quick runs in which you fight waves of monsters, choose upgrades, and build a stronger hero—not a measured rate of 50,000 kills per hour. The Diablo comparison works as an aesthetic cue, but the documented gameplay is built around surviving repeated enemy waves and shaping a fresh build during each run.
What kind of game is Halls of Torment?
Developed and published by Chasing Carrots, Halls of Torment puts you in a top-down, retro-styled arena against increasingly large waves of enemies. You choose a hero, fight to survive, and strengthen your character with traits, abilities, and items. The appeal is in combining those choices into a powerful run rather than following a conventional action-RPG campaign.

The Steam listing calls the runs “Quick and casual 30 minute runs” and describes quest-based progression between runs, along with unlockable worlds, characters, bosses, and build options. That 30-minute description is the store’s characterization, not a guarantee that every run takes exactly that long. See the official Steam listing.
Why compare it with Diablo—and where the comparison stops
The Diablo shorthand points to the game’s dark fantasy setting and retro action-RPG presentation. Chasing Carrots specifically describes its pre-rendered visual style as reminiscent of late-1990s RPGs. But the official description places Halls of Torment in the horde-survival roguelite lane: its central loop is managing waves and making in-run build choices, not progressing through a longer campaign. The comparison is about the look and mood, not evidence that the games share the same structure.
#1 Best Overall
“50,000 kills/hour” is energetic title language, not a documented gameplay statistic. The official listing and developer announcements reviewed do not establish a kills-per-hour figure, nor do they supply a dated player-count or sales statistic. Treat the phrase as hyperbole rather than a benchmark.
What is in the game?
The current Steam page lists the following content totals. These are figures shown on the listing; it does not date them as an independently measured or annual count.
| Content | Steam listing |
|---|---|
| Stages | 6 |
| Playable characters | 11 |
| Quests | 500 |
| Unique items | 60 |
| Abilities and upgrades | 74 |
| Bosses | 35+ |
The mix gives the game several ways to vary a run: different heroes, stages, enemy encounters, and combinations of upgrades. The listing also describes quests as part of meta progression, giving runs objectives that contribute to progress beyond simply surviving.
How the 2026 updates change the endgame
Chasing Carrots’ September 4, 2026 preview described Kill Mode, which can be toggled at the Shrine of Torment on eligible stages. It keeps records separately from timer mode, offering a different goal for players who have already spent time mastering the stages. The developer explained its intent: “We decided that making Kill Mode available for the late/end game would bring more action and challenge for long-term players.”

The developer also announced a free update with weekly challenges that set a stage, mode, and artifacts in advance. Statistics and records include scores, times, kills, and records by character or map, giving players ways to compare their own runs. These are announced features; consult the official announcements feed for the latest availability details.
The Lost Archives DLC
In a September 28, 2026 announcement, Chasing Carrots said quality assurance and localization had concluded and that it was preparing to finalize launch. The studio announced October 22, 2026 as the arrival date for The Lost Archives. As of October 8, 2026, that date is still in the future, so the DLC should be described as announced rather than released.
Rank #4
The announced DLC contents include a new stage, two characters, a Judgement system, and additional items, abilities, quests, traits, blessings, and artifacts. It is paid DLC, separate from the base game.
