PHYSINT is Kojima Productions’ action-espionage game, announced in 2024 with Sony Interactive Entertainment and now being developed with Xbox as its publishing partner. The studio has named Bill Skarsgård as the lead, but has not announced a release date or final platform list. Kojima described story and concept work, cast scans, and early 3D modeling in September 2026; the game engine was still undecided.
What is PHYSINT?
PHYSINT is the working title of an action-espionage game from Kojima Productions, which calls it the studio’s third original intellectual property. The project was first announced in January 2024 as a new action-espionage game; the studio later identified it by the name PHYSINT. Kojima Productions’ 2024 announcement said the game would use advanced technology and a cast, with an aim of blurring boundaries between film and games.
That description establishes the genre and broad creative ambition, not the game’s specific mechanics. The studio has not published a detailed plot, gameplay loop, or selected engine in the cited announcements and interview.
Is PHYSINT a new Metal Gear?
No. PHYSINT has been announced as a separate Kojima Productions original IP, not as a Metal Gear title. The Washington Post describes it as Kojima’s return to the action-espionage genre associated with his best-known games, making “spiritual successor” a reasonable way to describe the genre connection—but not an established story or franchise connection. The available sources do not confirm shared characters, continuity, or ownership with Metal Gear.

Who is publishing PHYSINT?
The publishing partner changed after the game’s initial announcement. Kojima Productions announced the project with Sony Interactive Entertainment in January 2024; in September 2026, the studio announced Xbox as its new publishing partner. The studio’s PHYSINT update confirms the new partnership. Separately, The Washington Post reported that Sony had stopped funding the project; that funding account is the newspaper’s reporting, not a detail established in the studio announcement. The Washington Post’s September 2026 interview also covers the project’s development.
Xbox’s role as publisher does not, on its own, establish which platforms will receive the game. Kojima Productions has not announced a final platform list in these sources.

Who is in the PHYSINT cast?
Kojima Productions announced Bill Skarsgård as the lead on September 17, 2026. The studio also named Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe as cast members. It said costume fittings, scans, and camera tests with Skarsgård and Fraser had taken place earlier that year.
How far along is PHYSINT?
In a Washington Post interview published September 20, 2026, Hideo Kojima said the plot and game concept had been written and storyboarded. The team had begun creating 3D models and scanning cast members, while experimenting with game engines; it had not made a final engine choice. These are signs of concept and preproduction work, but they do not establish a release window or how much development remains.
When is PHYSINT coming out, and what platforms will it be on?
No release date or final platform list is established by the cited official updates or interview. Xbox is the announced publishing partner, but that fact is not a confirmed platform announcement. The studio’s January 2024 statement said production would begin in earnest after Death Stranding 2; the later development update describes work underway but gives no launch timing.
