It was legitimate when obtained from HP, but HP ended the tool’s support, removed it from hp.com and, in a May 27, 2025 advisory, warned that all versions may be exposed to a high-severity elevation-of-privilege vulnerability.
Do not reinstall an old copy to fix an error. Remove the discontinued utility, scan any unexpected copy, and use HP Smart’s Diagnose & Fix workflow instead.

What hppsdr.exe does
HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows used hppsdr.exe as its main executable. HP designed the utility to check common printing and scanning failures, including an offline printer, a stuck print queue, connection problems and scanner errors. HP’s historical instructions were to run the executable from its download location, select a printer and choose Fix Printing or Fix Scanning.
The filename identifies the program’s traditional role, not the authenticity of every file carrying that name. A copy in an HP-created diagnostics folder is materially different from an executable downloaded from an unknown software site. Windows filenames can be copied or changed, so provenance, the publisher signature and security-scan results matter more than the name alone.

Is hppsdr.exe safe now?
There are two separate questions: whether a particular file is the genuine HP utility, and whether the utility should remain installed. A genuine copy is not automatically malware, but HP no longer supports the product. In its May 27, 2025 customer advisory, HP said Print and Scan Doctor “may potentially be exposed to an elevation of privilege security vulnerability,” rated the issue High, listed all versions as impacted and recommended removal.
That status means the former utility should not be retained as a current troubleshooting tool, even if it originally came from HP. HP also removed the software from hp.com and directs users to migrate to HP Smart. An old, authentic executable can therefore be obsolete and unsafe to keep in service without being malicious itself.
What the warning does and does not prove
- It does establish that HP considers every version affected by the advisory and no longer supports the product.
- It does not prove that every file named hppsdr.exe is malware.
- It does not make a random download trustworthy because it uses the HP filename.
- It does mean reinstalling an archived copy is not the supported long-term solution.
Check where the file came from before touching it
If an alert or error points to hppsdr.exe, first record its location. In Task Manager, right-click the process, choose Open file location, then close the process if it is running. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when it is present. A signature associated with HP is useful evidence, but it is not a substitute for a current security scan; an unsigned or unexpected copy deserves extra caution.

A file in one of those directories may be a remnant of the discontinued program. A file in a temporary-download folder, a user profile’s random subfolder or an unrelated application directory should be treated as an unexpected copy until Microsoft Defender has checked it.
How to remove HP Print and Scan Doctor safely
Use the following order. It removes the obsolete program without relying on an old installer and separates ordinary cleanup from malware handling.
1. Stop the old utility
- Save any printer or scanner work.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - On Processes or Details, select
hppsdr.exeif it is running and choose End task.
If Windows refuses to stop it, restart the computer and continue before launching any HP Print and Scan Doctor shortcut.
2. Uninstall it through Windows when an entry exists
- Open Settings and select Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds).
- Search for HP Print and Scan Doctor or HP PSDR.
- Choose the three-dot menu, select Uninstall, and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
Some copies were run directly without a conventional installed-app entry. If no entry appears, continue with the folder and shortcut cleanup rather than downloading another installer.

3. Remove shortcuts and the application folders
- Check the desktop, Start menu and taskbar for an HP Print and Scan Doctor shortcut.
- Remove those shortcuts after the process has stopped.
- In File Explorer, check
C:HPDiagnosticsPSDRandC:Program Files (x86)HPDiagnosticsPSDR. - Delete the remaining HP Print and Scan Doctor folders when they clearly belong to the discontinued utility.
If Windows says a file is in use, restart and try again. Do not delete a folder merely because it contains an HP name if it also contains drivers or software you still use; verify the folder’s contents and the installed-app entry first.
4. Empty the Recycle Bin and restart
Empty the Recycle Bin after checking that you did not remove another HP component. Restarting clears a process that may have been loaded before the cleanup and lets you confirm that the old shortcut no longer launches.
What to do when the copy is suspicious
If hppsdr.exe arrived from an untrusted website, appeared unexpectedly, or triggered a security warning, do not whitelist it and do not launch it to “test” the file. Microsoft’s guidance is to download software only from trusted sources, keep antivirus current, run a full Microsoft Defender scan and use Microsoft Defender Offline if unwanted software persists.

Run a full Microsoft Defender scan
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then Scan options.
- Choose Full scan and select Scan now.
- Leave the computer on until the scan completes, then follow Windows Security’s quarantine or removal instructions for anything it detects.
Use Microsoft Defender Offline when a threat keeps returning
- In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
- Select Microsoft Defender Offline scan and choose Scan now.
- Save open work first; Windows will restart and scan before the normal desktop loads.
- After Windows starts again, review Protection history for the result.
A clean scan does not turn the discontinued HP utility into supported software. It only addresses the possibility that an unexpected copy is unwanted.

Move printer and scanner troubleshooting to HP Smart
HP’s advisory recommends removing Print and Scan Doctor and migrating to HP Smart. Install HP Smart through an official HP or Microsoft distribution channel available for your Windows edition, add the printer, and use its Diagnose & Fix workflow when offered. The exact screens can vary by printer model and Windows version, but the supported path is to troubleshoot from the maintained application rather than revive HPPSdr.exe.
Keep the printer powered on and connected by the same USB or network method you intend to use. If HP Smart cannot find it, check the physical cable or Wi-Fi connection, confirm that the printer is selected on the same network as the PC, and follow the application’s prompts before changing advanced Windows settings. These checks address connection symptoms without bringing back the retired diagnostic executable.

Can you delete hppsdr.exe?
Yes, if it belongs to the discontinued HP Print and Scan Doctor, removing the application and its shortcuts is the appropriate action. Prefer uninstalling first, then deleting the specific folders HP identified. Deleting only the executable can leave shortcuts or folders behind and does not address a suspicious copy elsewhere on the drive.
If the file is in an unexpected location or Windows Security has flagged it, quarantine or remove it through Microsoft Defender rather than adding an exclusion. Do not download a replacement hppsdr.exe from an archive or third-party software site simply because a printer error remains.

Why Windows may show “Unsupported 16-bit Application”
An HP Support Community report dated May 16, 2019 documented an “Unsupported 16-bit Application” message and “This app can’t run on your PC” for HPPSdr.exe on 64-bit Windows 10. The discussion associated that failure with an incomplete HTTP/HTTPS download and reported that an FTP download worked at the time. The report also identified Print and Scan Doctor version 5.2.1.002, but that was historical information, not a current supported release.
That old explanation can help identify a damaged download, but it should not guide a 2026 repair. HP’s later advisory supersedes the workaround: remove the discontinued utility and use HP Smart. Do not hunt for an old FTP copy or try compatibility settings to keep an unsupported executable in service.
If the message appears during startup
- Note the complete path shown in the error.
- Open Task Manager and check Startup apps for an HP Print and Scan Doctor entry.
- Disable that obsolete startup entry if present.
- Uninstall the utility and remove its folders using the steps above.
- Restart and run a Microsoft Defender scan if the file was not from a known HP location.
Fixes for common hppsdr.exe error situations
“The application was unable to start” or a missing-file message
These messages commonly occur when a shortcut or startup item points to a removed, incomplete or damaged copy. Do not replace the missing file with a download. Remove the shortcut or startup entry, uninstall any remaining Print and Scan Doctor components and move printer diagnostics to HP Smart.

The file keeps reappearing
Check scheduled tasks, Startup apps and any printer-support package that may be launching the old utility. Remove only entries clearly labeled for Print and Scan Doctor, then restart. If an unfamiliar process recreates the file, run a full Defender scan followed by Defender Offline if necessary.
Windows blocks deletion
End the process in Task Manager, restart and try the folder cleanup again. If Windows Security identifies the file, use its quarantine or removal action. Avoid taking ownership of broad system directories or changing permissions just to force deletion.
The printer is still offline after removal
Removing Print and Scan Doctor does not remove the printer itself. Open HP Smart, add the printer again if necessary and run Diagnose & Fix. Confirm power, cable or network conditions before assuming that the retired utility was required for the printer to work.
What the filename cannot tell you
- It cannot establish that a file is genuine HP software.
- It cannot establish that the file is current or supported.
- It cannot establish that a printer problem is caused by malware.
- It cannot justify disabling Microsoft Defender or creating an antivirus exclusion.
Use the file path, publisher information, download source and Defender findings together. The practical decision is straightforward: remove genuine HP Print and Scan Doctor because it is retired and affected by HP’s advisory; treat an unexpected copy as potentially unwanted until a current security scan clears it; and use HP Smart for supported printer and scanner diagnosis.
