What Is ibuninst.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix ibuninst.exe Errors on Windows

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ibuninst.exe is the documented uninstaller for InterBase 5.5, not a standard Windows component. A genuine copy normally sits in an InterBase installation folder and works with a companion file named ibuninst.001. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe: check its full path, digital signature, hash, and the InterBase installation it belongs to before opening or deleting it.

If the file is unexpected, unsigned, detected by security software, or stored in a temporary or unrelated folder, do not run it. Update Microsoft Defender, perform a full scan, and escalate to Defender Offline or Microsoft Safety Scanner if the detection persists. If InterBase is installed, remove it through Windows Apps rather than deleting the executable first.

What ibuninst.exe does

InterBase documentation identifies ibuninst.exe as the uninstall command for InterBase 5.5. The documented uninstaller is launched from the InterBase installation directory and relies on an accompanying ibuninst.001 file. In that context, the executable is a normal part of the database software’s removal process.

That description applies to the InterBase uninstaller documented for that release. It does not make every file with the same name legitimate. Malware, unwanted software, or a damaged leftover can use a familiar filename. Windows also does not assign a special trust level merely because a file ends in .exe.

Why the companion file matters

An error saying that ibuninst.001 is missing, unreadable, or invalid can mean the InterBase installation is incomplete or that the executable was copied away from its original folder. The two files should be assessed together with the rest of the InterBase installation. Downloading a replacement executable from a generic DLL or EXE website is not a safe repair method.

Is ibuninst.exe safe?

There is no filename-only answer. Treat a copy as potentially legitimate only when its provenance and behavior make sense:

  • InterBase is installed or was recently installed on the computer.
  • Its cryptographic hash is consistent with a trusted copy or with records maintained by your organization.
  • It appears when you intentionally start an InterBase uninstall, not as an unexplained startup process or pop-up.

Microsoft’s unwanted-software criteria also emphasize consent and a clear, straightforward uninstall or disable path. Bundled installation, misleading prompts, or deliberately difficult removal are warning signs even when a file has a familiar name.

What one public sample shows—and does not show

A ThreatInfo record for one exact sample reported an MD5 hash of 3e1a1a04abc8e2cd57c47a01927c0c8d, a size of 637 KB, and a GridinSoft “General Threat” verdict from analysis dated August 16, 2024. Those details describe that submitted sample only. They are not a prevalence statistic and do not prove that every ibuninst.exe is malicious or that every file with a different hash is safe.

Evidence What it can tell you What it cannot prove
Full path Whether the file is located with an InterBase installation That the file has not been replaced or tampered with
Publisher and signature Whether Windows can validate the signer and whether the file changed after signing That the signed software is appropriate for your particular installation
Hash Whether two files are byte-for-byte identical when the same algorithm is used That a file with no matching reference is automatically malware
Parent application Whether InterBase is installed and explains the file That an old or damaged installation is functioning correctly
Security scan Whether your current security tools detect suspicious content A guarantee that no future or undiscovered threat exists

Check the file before opening or deleting it

Do this inspection first, especially if an error, pop-up, or security alert brought the file to your attention. Do not double-click it while gathering evidence.

  1. Record the complete path. In File Explorer, right-click ibuninst.exe, choose Properties, and note the location shown on the General tab. Compare it with the folder where InterBase is installed. A path in a temporary directory, a random folder under a user profile, or an unrelated application’s directory needs extra scrutiny.
  2. Check the publisher. Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present, select the signature, and choose Details. A valid signature should show that Windows verified it and should identify the signer. An absent, invalid, or unexpectedly different signature is a reason not to execute the file.
  3. Record size and dates. The Details and General tabs show file size and timestamps. A size or timestamp that does not fit the surrounding InterBase files is useful evidence, but neither value is a verdict by itself.
  4. Calculate a hash without running the file. In PowerShell, use Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath "C:pathtoibuninst.exe", replacing the path with the exact location. Keep the result for comparison with a trusted copy or an incident report. Windows can also calculate an MD5 value with Get-FileHash -Algorithm MD5 -LiteralPath "C:pathtoibuninst.exe"; MD5 is useful for matching a known sample but is not a modern integrity standard.
  5. Confirm the parent software. Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features on supported Windows editions and search for InterBase. On systems using the classic interface, open Programs and Features from Control Panel. If no InterBase installation exists, treat an unexplained copy as suspicious rather than assuming it is an orphaned uninstaller.

Remove InterBase through Windows

If your inspection shows a normal InterBase installation and you want to remove it, use Windows’ registered uninstall route. This preserves the application’s own cleanup logic and avoids leaving services, registry entries, or shared components behind.

  1. Save work and close InterBase applications, database tools, and any process that may be using the installation.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  3. Select the InterBase entry and choose Uninstall, then follow the prompts. If your edition presents the classic interface instead, open Programs and Features, select InterBase, and choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows when the uninstaller requests it, or restart after it completes if files remain locked.
  5. After the restart, check that the InterBase entry is gone and rescan the computer with Microsoft Defender.

Only launch ibuninst.exe directly when you have verified its path and signature and the normal Apps entry is unavailable or broken. If you do so, run it from the original InterBase installation directory so that ibuninst.001 is available. Running an unverified copy with administrator rights can give a malicious program more access, so verification comes first.

Symptom Likely explanation Manual action
“ibuninst.001” is missing or cannot be found The executable was separated from its companion file, or the installation is incomplete Do not download a replacement from an arbitrary site. Return to the original InterBase installation folder, check whether both files are present, and use the Apps uninstall entry. If the installation media or package is available from your administrator or software vendor, repair or reinstall that same package, then uninstall it normally.
Access denied or permission error Your account lacks rights, or files are locked by a running process Close InterBase programs, sign in with an account authorized to remove the application, and retry the Windows uninstall entry. Restart Windows to release locks. Do not change permissions on random folders or disable security controls just to force execution.
The Apps entry is present but the uninstaller crashes The installation may be damaged, or the executable may not be the original one Record the path and signature, scan the file, and look for a repair option in the same trusted InterBase installation package. If the file is detected or its provenance is unclear, stop executing it and follow the suspicious-file process below.
Windows says the file is not found The uninstall registration points to a deleted or moved file Do not recreate the path with a downloaded executable. Use the original InterBase installer or your organization’s approved software source to repair the registration, then remove InterBase through Windows Apps.
The file appears unexpectedly at startup or in a random folder It may be an unrelated program using the name, a leftover, or unwanted software Do not run or delete it immediately. Capture its path and metadata, update Defender, and perform the scans described below.

When a verified uninstaller still will not run

First retry after a restart with all InterBase windows closed. Confirm that the companion file remains beside the executable and that the account has permission to remove the application. If the failure continues, use the original InterBase installation package’s repair or reinstall function, if your administrator or software provider supplied one, and then invoke the standard Windows uninstall entry. Keep the exact error text; it is more useful to support staff than a filename alone.

What to do with an unexpected or detected copy

If ibuninst.exe is unsigned, stored outside an InterBase directory, associated with no installed InterBase product, or flagged by security software, treat it as untrusted until proven otherwise.

  1. Do not open it, approve an elevation prompt, or add an exclusion. Disconnecting from untrusted networks can be sensible while you investigate, but do not delete evidence before a scan or support review.
  2. Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence. In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates, check for updates before scanning.
  3. Run a full scan. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Full scan, and let it finish. Microsoft describes Defender Antivirus as attempting to block malware before it infects the device, but a clean result is not a license to execute an unexplained file.
  4. Escalate when necessary. If the file returns, cannot be removed, or the computer shows continuing suspicious behavior, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same scan-options area. Microsoft Safety Scanner is another Microsoft-provided option for a comprehensive check; download it only from Microsoft’s official channel and use the current release.
  5. Quarantine rather than manually replacing files. Allow Defender to quarantine a detection. If you need specialist analysis, preserve the path, hash, alert name, and timestamps and submit the suspicious file to Microsoft through its malware-submission process when appropriate.
  6. Remove the parent application. If an unwanted program is listed in Windows Apps, uninstall that parent application, restart, and scan again. Removing only the visible executable can leave the component that recreates it.

Can you delete ibuninst.exe?

Deleting it is safe only after you have established what it belongs to and no longer need that software’s uninstall or repair process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • InterBase is installed: Do not delete the executable manually. Use the Windows uninstall entry, which can remove the application as a set and may need ibuninst.001.
  • InterBase was removed successfully: If the file is a leftover in the former installation directory, verify that the Apps entry is gone, restart, and scan before removing the leftover. Keep a backup or restore point if the computer is managed or the file’s ownership is uncertain.
  • The file is suspicious: Do not use ordinary deletion as the first response. Scan and quarantine it so security tools can remove related components and retain a record of the detection.
  • The file is in a shared or business installation: Ask the administrator who owns the InterBase deployment before changing it. A database client or service may depend on the installation even if you do not use it directly.

Force-deleting a file can also leave a broken uninstall registration. If Windows later reports that the uninstaller is missing, repair the original installation from a trusted package rather than downloading a similarly named executable.

How to verify that the problem is resolved

  1. Restart Windows after uninstalling or quarantining the file.
  2. Confirm that the InterBase entry and any related application you intended to remove no longer appears in Settings > Apps > Apps & features or Programs and Features.
  3. Run another Microsoft Defender scan, especially if the original file was unexpected or detected.
  4. Check that the original error no longer appears and that no new copy of ibuninst.exe is being created.
  5. Keep the path, hash, alert name, and exact error text if you need to contact an administrator, InterBase support channel, or Microsoft.

As an optional shortcut after you have completed the safety checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared-DLL problems, and can log application crashes. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
