imei.exe is not identified by the authoritative Windows and Intel sources reviewed here as a standard Windows component or an official Intel executable. Treat it as an unknown program until you verify its complete path, publisher signature, origin, hash and security-scan results. The filename alone cannot establish that it is safe or malicious.
The name is sometimes confused with Intel Management Engine (ME/MEI), a subsystem used on many Intel-chipset computers. That connection is only a possibility: a real MEI driver package comes from Intel or the computer manufacturer and is tied to a specific model and Windows version. Do not download a similarly named imei.exe from a pop-up or unofficial driver site.

What imei.exe is—and what is not established
There is no authoritative definition for an executable named imei.exe in the sources used for this guide. No default Windows path, publisher, hash, version, or Microsoft component has been established for that filename. It could be a mistyped name, a vendor installer renamed by somebody, or an unwanted or malicious program.
Intel does document Management Engine (ME), also called Management Engine Interface (MEI), as a subsystem present on many Intel-chipset platforms. Intel and computer manufacturers distribute model-specific MEI support packages. Those packages do not prove that an arbitrary file named imei.exe belongs to Intel. File-specific evidence controls the conclusion.

Microsoft distinguishes uncommon or unknown software from confirmed malware. Unfamiliar software can carry more risk, but rarity alone is not proof of infection. Microsoft’s classification criteria explain that distinction and provide a route for submitting a file for analysis: Microsoft Defender classification guidance.
Is imei.exe safe?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. A copy with a valid signature from an identifiable vendor, an expected installation path and a legitimate installation history is materially different from a copy launched from a temporary folder, a user download directory or an unsolicited pop-up. Even a plausible path is an investigative clue, not proof by itself.
| What you find | What it means | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown publisher, no valid signature, unexpected path | Identity is unverified and risk is higher | Do not run it; preserve the details and scan it |
| Microsoft Defender detection classified as a potentially unwanted application (PUA) | Windows has blocked or flagged the item, but it is not automatically the same as confirmed malware | Open Protection history and complete the offered action instead of repeatedly ignoring it |
| Confirmed malware or persistence | The file or related software requires removal and incident-response steps | Quarantine or remove it with Windows Security and protect accounts from a clean device |
| Intel or an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) identifies an MEI driver issue | The problem may involve the Management Engine driver, not an executable called imei.exe |
Install the package for the exact computer model and Windows version from Intel or the OEM |
| Valid vendor signature and expected installation history | The file has stronger evidence of legitimacy, but behavior and scan results still matter | Keep it only if the associated software is needed and scans are clean |
Do this before opening, deleting or replacing the file
- Stop interacting with the alert. If the file appeared in a browser pop-up, a crack, an unofficial driver download or a message that supplies a telephone number, close the window. Microsoft says genuine error and warning messages do not include phone numbers. Do not call the number, grant remote access or download the offered “fix.”
- Do not launch the questionable copy. If it is already running, avoid clicking through prompts until you have recorded its identity. A screenshot can preserve the exact wording without executing anything else.
- Record where it came from. Note the date, the application that reported it, the account that was logged in and whether you installed software immediately beforehand. Provenance often separates a legitimate installer from an unsolicited payload.
- Use a clean device for sensitive account changes. If the event includes repeated pop-ups, suspected credential theft or unauthorized remote access, do not enter passwords on the affected PC while investigating.
Verify the file’s path, publisher and signature
Locate the running copy in Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
- Look for
imei.exeunder Processes or Details. Names can be duplicated, so match the process to the time and application that produced the alert. - Right-click the entry and choose Open file location. Copy the complete path before ending the process.
- If the process is not running, search the locations named in the alert or inspect the shortcut or startup entry that launches it. Do not download a replacement merely because a file is missing.
A path under an expected vendor directory is more reassuring than one under a temporary folder, browser cache, random directory or a user’s downloads. The path remains only one piece of evidence; malware can imitate a sensible name or location.
Inspect Properties
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and open the General tab. Record the file size, creation or modification dates and location.
- Open Details and record the product name, file description, company, file version and original filename if those fields exist.
- Open Digital Signatures. Select a signature, choose Details and check whether Windows reports that the signature is valid and identifies a publisher you recognize.
An absent signature does not automatically prove malware, especially for small third-party utilities, but an unexpected publisher, an invalid signature or a mismatch between the claimed company and the installation source is a reason to stop and investigate.

Record a hash without running the file
A cryptographic hash lets you compare the exact bytes of the file with a vendor or security submission. In PowerShell, replace the path with the one you recorded:
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath "C:pathtoimei.exe"
Alternatively, Command Prompt can calculate the same type of value:
certutil -hashfile "C:pathtoimei.exe" SHA256
Save the result with the path, signature status and source. A hash identifies that exact copy; it does not make an unknown file safe.
Scan the file and the computer with Windows Security
Update security intelligence first
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Choose Virus & threat protection, then select Protection updates and Check for updates (the wording can vary slightly by Windows edition).
- Return to Virus & threat protection and select Scan options.
Run a full scan
Choose Full scan and start it. A full scan checks the computer rather than only the current location, so allow it to finish. If Windows Security identifies the file, use the offered quarantine or removal action and keep the detection name for your records. Do not restore an item simply because its filename looks familiar.

Use Microsoft Defender Offline when unwanted software persists
If the detection returns after a restart, the process reappears, or Windows Security reports that it cannot clean the item while Windows is running, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan under Scan options. Save open work first. The computer restarts into a separate scanning environment and then boots back into Windows. Review the result in Protection history after signing in.
Complete a PUA action
A potentially unwanted application can remain blocked but not removed until you explicitly select an action. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history, select the relevant detection and choose the available action, such as Remove or Start actions. Repeatedly dismissing the alert leaves the underlying item in place.
Submit an uncertain file
When scans are inconclusive or you believe a clean file was flagged incorrectly, Microsoft provides an official malware-analysis submission process. Submit only through Microsoft’s official portal and follow its instructions about what information and file data are collected. Do not upload confidential documents or unrelated personal files.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Remove a suspicious copy safely
- Uninstall the associated program first. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on some Windows versions), sort by installation date and remove software you do not recognize or no longer need. If the file belongs to a program you intentionally installed, verify that program’s publisher before uninstalling.
- Check startup entries. In Task Manager, open Startup apps and disable an unrecognized entry temporarily. Disabling startup prevents automatic launching while you investigate; it does not delete the file.
- Let Windows Security quarantine or remove it. Use the action offered in Protection history rather than manually deleting files from system directories. Manual deletion can leave startup references behind and can damage legitimate software.
- Restart and rescan. After removal, restart Windows, update security intelligence again and run another scan if the alert returns.
- Keep evidence if you may need support. Retain the path, publisher, signature details, hash, detection name and the software that installed it. These details are more useful than the filename alone.
If Windows reports that a file is in use, do not force-delete it with an unfamiliar utility. Use the Defender Offline scan or uninstall the parent application, then repeat the scan.

When the problem is really Intel Management Engine
An error mentioning ME, MEI or Management Engine can be a driver problem even when the alert displays a confusing filename. The correct package is tied to the computer’s exact model, hardware revision and Windows version.
Confirm the device in Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand System devices and look for an Intel Management Engine Interface entry or a device marked with a warning icon.
- Open Properties, read the General tab’s device status and record the hardware identifiers under Details if support asks for them.
A Device Manager warning is evidence of a device or driver issue; it does not authenticate a file named imei.exe.
Get the driver from the exact model’s support page
- Identify the computer manufacturer and full model number. Avoid relying only on a family name because different configurations can use different packages.
- Use the manufacturer’s official support page or Intel’s Download Center. Select the exact model or platform and the Windows edition and version you run.
- Read the package description to confirm that it is for Intel Management Engine or Management Engine Interface. Do not substitute a random executable with a similar spelling.
- Download the installer, close applications and run the package from the official source. Follow its prompts and restart when requested.
- Return to Device Manager after the restart. Confirm that the warning icon is gone and review the driver provider and version in Properties > Driver.
Lenovo and other OEMs publish their own model-specific ME packages. An OEM package can be preferable when the manufacturer has customized firmware or driver dependencies for that computer. Installing a generic package for a different model can leave the original problem unresolved.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix recurring “application error” or startup messages
Capture the exact message
Write down the complete error text, any exception code, the program name, and when it appears: at sign-in, during shutdown, after waking from sleep, or when a particular application starts. “imei.exe application error” is not specific enough to identify a repair.

- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Trace the launcher
Use Task Manager’s Startup apps list and the file’s Properties to identify the parent software. If an unrecognized program installed the file, uninstall that program through Windows Settings and scan again. If the entry belongs to an Intel or OEM driver package, obtain the matching package from the official support source instead of copying a replacement executable.
Separate a missing-file symptom from a malicious-file symptom
- A message that appears after uninstalling a program may be a leftover startup reference. Disable the startup item, remove the parent application properly and restart.
- A message accompanied by browser redirects, repeated security warnings, credential prompts or remote-access requests should be treated as a security incident, not as an ordinary missing-DLL repair.
- A Device Manager warning without suspicious behavior points toward driver verification and an official MEI package, not a download of
imei.exe.
When to escalate
Escalate promptly if scans show persistence, accounts were accessed without authorization, passwords may have been captured, or someone obtained remote control. Disconnect the affected computer from networks where practical, change passwords from a known-clean device, enable multifactor authentication where available, and follow Microsoft’s recovery or support guidance. Do not pay a caller or follow a telephone number displayed in an error page.
For a normal software-support case, provide the technician with the path, signature result, hash, detection name, Windows edition and the exact error text. Do not send credentials or unrelated personal files.

Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not assume that “Intel” in a filename makes the file an Intel component.
- Do not download a replacement
imei.exefrom a file-sharing page, unofficial driver site or pop-up. - Do not disable Windows Security merely to make the message disappear.
- Do not delete files from protected Windows or driver directories before identifying the software that owns them.
- Do not call a phone number shown in a browser alert or grant remote access to an unsolicited caller.
A practical decision checklist
- Unknown file: record its path, Properties, signature and SHA-256 hash without opening it.
- Suspicious origin or invalid signature: update Windows Security, run a Full scan, and use Defender Offline if it returns.
- PUA alert: open Protection history and complete the offered removal action.
- Confirmed malicious behavior: quarantine or remove the software, protect accounts from a clean device and seek recovery support.
- MEI device warning: install the exact Intel or OEM package for the computer model and Windows version, then verify the device in Device Manager.
- No evidence of legitimacy: keep the file quarantined or removed. There is no authoritative, imei.exe-specific repair command established for every computer.
As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows problems involving broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, settings that increase CPU, RAM or disk load, temporary and cache files, privacy warnings, vulnerability issues and application-crash records. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
