Official Nintendo material confirms that role and shows him returning in Luigi’s Mansion 3, where he traps Mario and his friends inside paintings. What official pages do not provide is a full origin story: how he became king, where his powers come from, and what started his feud with Luigi are not explained in the Nintendo material available for this article.
Where King Boo first appears
King Boo debuts in Luigi’s Mansion, which the Super Mario Wiki dates to 2001. Nintendo’s game page for the original game sets up the premise: Luigi searches a haunted mansion for his missing brother Mario. Professor E. Gadd equips Luigi with the Poltergust 3000, a vacuum-like device that stuns and captures ghosts. The game’s opening setup therefore centres on Mario’s disappearance and Luigi’s rescue attempt, with King Boo as the force behind the capture.

King Boo’s role among the Boos
The clearest description of King Boo as a ruler comes from an in-game character profile, which the Super Mario Wiki transcribes. It calls him “The giant Boo adorned with a crown” and says he has evil plans involving other Boos. That wording is a fan-maintained transcription of game text, not an official Nintendo statement, so it is best cited as a description of how the game presents him.
Nintendo’s general description of Boos, on its Play Nintendo page, presents them as shy spirits that freeze or vanish when seen face-to-face. The table below separates that general Boo description from the King Boo profile.

The feud with Luigi in later games
The conflict continues in Luigi’s Mansion 3, which Nintendo’s UK game page lists with a 2019 release date. Nintendo says King Boo traps Mario and his friends inside paintings and that Luigi must stop his plans. The official page establishes the plot connection, but it does not explain how the rivalry began or why it has persisted across entries.
Why the rivalry is not explained
The Nintendo pages covered here describe the premise and the later plot, but they do not set out a backstory for King Boo. The Super Mario Wiki summarises his motivation as revenge and spite and describes a 2001 debut in the first game. That is a fan-maintained interpretation of the character, not a statement from Nintendo, so it should be attributed to that source.

Readers looking for a definitive origin story should treat the current official material as a description of his role and plot function rather than a biography. Any claim about his history beyond these points is interpretation, and it should be labelled as such.
