LiveKernelEvent 141 is Windows’ record of a graphics-engine timeout, formally VIDEO_ENGINE_TIMEOUT_DETECTED (0x141). The graphics watchdog gave a GPU task about two seconds to finish or be preempted, detected that it had not recovered, and invoked Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR). Windows may reset the display driver and return you to the desktop, or you may see a frozen or black screen, an application crash, or a restart. The entry proves that a graphics task timed out; it does not prove that the graphics card is dead. Drivers, a game or video application, firmware, power delivery, heat, unstable overclocking, and failing hardware can all produce the same event.
What LiveKernelEvent 141 actually records
Windows uses a GPU scheduler to track work submitted to the graphics engine. If a task cannot complete or be preempted within the TDR watchdog interval, the operating system diagnoses the graphics engine as unresponsive and attempts recovery. Microsoft documents the default TDR timeout as two seconds. LiveKernelEvent 141 is the live-dump representation of that condition, whose technical name is VIDEO_ENGINE_TIMEOUT_DETECTED (0x141).

TDR is designed to avoid requiring a full system reboot whenever possible. A successful recovery can reset the display driver while Windows remains running. You might notice a momentary black screen, a flicker, a message that a display driver stopped responding, a game closing, or a return to the desktop. If recovery fails, the computer can remain frozen or reboot. The Reliability Monitor entry is therefore a symptom report, not a diagnosis of the component at fault.

Does code 141 mean your GPU is failing?
No. A 141 event confirms a graphics-engine timeout, but it cannot distinguish a software timeout from a marginal card or another platform problem. Treat it as a starting point for isolation.
- Driver regression or corruption: A newly installed graphics driver can introduce a compatibility problem, while an incomplete update or damaged installation can leave the graphics stack unstable.
- Application workload: A particular game, video decoder, browser page, mod, or rendering feature may trigger a task that repeatedly exceeds the watchdog interval.
- Firmware and platform compatibility: GPU firmware, motherboard firmware, chipset software, or a recent Windows change can affect how the graphics device is scheduled.
- Power or temperature: Loose PCIe power connections, inadequate airflow, or temperatures outside the card maker’s specifications can make a normally stable workload fail.
- Unstable tuning: GPU or CPU overclocks, undervolts, and memory timings can pass light tests yet fail under a specific graphics load.
- Hardware deterioration: A card, motherboard slot, memory subsystem, or power-delivery component can be marginal. Repeated failures after controlled software and physical checks make this possibility more credible, but 141 alone does not justify replacement.
Start by capturing the circumstances
Before changing several settings, write down what happened. A reproducible description is more useful to a driver developer or hardware-support technician than a bare “code 141” report.
- Record the visible symptom. Note whether the screen froze, went black, flickered, or recovered to the desktop. Record whether sound continued and whether the keyboard still responded.
- Record the workload. Identify the game, video player, browser, benchmark, or other program. Note whether the event occurred during loading, a scene change, video playback, monitor switching, wake-from-sleep, or while the PC was idle.
- Record the recovery result. State whether Windows reset the driver, closed an application, required a sign-out, or rebooted. Include the approximate time and how often it occurs.
- Record recent changes. List graphics-driver updates or rollbacks, Windows updates, new displays or adapters, firmware updates, added overlays, and any overclock or undervolt change.
Keep this log while testing. Change one variable at a time where possible; otherwise a successful run will not tell you which change mattered.

Event Viewer
- Right-click Start and choose Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > System.
- Filter or inspect entries around the LiveKernelEvent timestamp.
- Look for display-driver resets, device-start or device-stop messages, power events, and Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA) events. Record the provider, event ID, message, and time.
Microsoft recommends using system logs and any reported module or stop-code information to identify the device or driver involved. A display-driver message at the same second as 141 is more useful than an unrelated warning several hours earlier. WHEA or power-related records can point the investigation beyond the graphics driver, while no companion event does not rule out a hardware problem.
Stabilize Windows and the graphics-driver baseline
Install current Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install applicable updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it, then test the same workload again.
Use the edition and build appropriate for your computer. If the problem began immediately after a Windows update, record that timing and continue with the driver comparison rather than repeatedly reinstalling unrelated updates.
Install the driver for the exact GPU and operating system
Identify the graphics card model and Windows version before downloading a driver from the GPU maker or the computer manufacturer. Choose the package intended for that exact model and operating-system edition. Follow the vendor’s supported installation or clean-install procedure, restart, and test one previously reliable workload.
Do not judge the result from a single idle session. Reproduce the activity that normally causes 141, while keeping overlays, tuning, and other variables unchanged from the documented baseline.

Test a rollback when the timing points to a new driver
Microsoft notes that updating or rolling back a graphics driver can resolve device problems and that a recently installed driver can itself be the cause. If the first 141 appeared after an update, use the vendor’s supported rollback option or install the previous known-good package using its documented clean-install process. Record both versions and the date of each test.
When a rollback stops the event, keep the older driver temporarily and report the regression to the GPU or system manufacturer. When neither version changes the behavior, move to application, tuning, and physical checks instead of cycling through random packages.
Remove tuning and overlay variables
Return the GPU, CPU, and memory to their manufacturer defaults before deciding that a component is defective. Disable GPU overclocks, undervolts, custom power limits, aggressive memory timings, and automatic tuning profiles. If your motherboard or graphics utility applies a profile at startup, turn that profile off and reboot.
Temporarily disable overlays and recently added graphics utilities, including in-game overlays, recording hooks, monitoring injectors, and shader or enhancement tools. Test the same scene or playback path after each change. Re-enable one item only after a stable run, so you can identify a particular conflict rather than treating “all software” as one variable.

If the failure occurs only in one title, use that title’s supported file-repair or graphics-reset option and test with a conservative preset. A game-specific trigger is evidence about the workload, not proof that the GPU is defective.
Check the physical installation and operating conditions
Power and seating
- Shut down the PC, switch off the power supply if it has a switch, and disconnect mains power before opening the case.
- Verify that the graphics card is fully seated in its PCIe slot and secured to the case.
- Check that every required PCIe power connector is firmly latched at the card and at the power-supply end where applicable. Do not force a connector or use an adapter outside the card maker’s guidance.
- Inspect for dust blocking the fans or heatsinks and make sure case fans have a clear intake and exhaust path.
Temperature and airflow
Use the graphics card maker’s monitoring utility or another trusted monitor to observe temperature during the workload that reproduces 141. Compare the reading with the card maker’s published operating specifications; there is no universal “safe” number for every model. Note whether the event occurs only after the card has warmed up or when the case is closed and airflow is restricted.
These checks are diagnostic. Code 141 by itself is not evidence that you must replace the card or power supply. If you find a loose connection, blocked airflow, or temperatures outside the manufacturer’s limits, correct that condition and repeat the controlled test.
Use the trigger pattern to choose the next test
| Observed pattern | Most useful next comparison | What the result can indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Started immediately after a graphics-driver update | Compare the current package with the previous known-good driver using the vendor’s rollback or clean-install process. | If only the new package fails, a driver regression or installation issue becomes more likely. |
| Occurs in one game or video application | Test another graphics workload at stock settings and compare with overlays disabled. | A workload, feature, application, or overlay conflict is more plausible than a failure that affects every task. |
| Occurs after wake, monitor switching, or docking | Test a single display and a cold boot, then compare the display connection or dock path. | The display chain, power transition, firmware, or driver state may be involved. |
| Occurs at idle or across unrelated workloads | Check Event Viewer for device, power, and WHEA records and repeat at stock settings. | A platform, power, firmware, or hardware issue deserves closer attention. |
| Stops when overclocks or undervolts are removed | Keep factory settings and reintroduce one tuning change only if you accept the stability trade-off. | The prior tuning profile was not stable for that workload. |
| Persists after a controlled driver test and physical checks | Test the card in another compatible system, or test a known-good card in the affected system when practical. | If the fault follows the card, the card is more suspect; if it stays with the system, investigate the slot, board, power, memory, or platform. |
| Accompanied by a reboot, WHEA event, or power-related record | Preserve all correlated logs and involve the system or component manufacturer. | The timeout may be part of a broader hardware or power fault rather than an isolated driver reset. |
No single comparison proves a cause. The value comes from changing one side of the comparison while keeping the workload and settings documented.

Isolate the fault without replacing parts prematurely
Repeat at factory settings
After driver and physical checks, run the same reproducible workload with all tuning disabled. If 141 disappears, leave the system at stock settings long enough to establish stability. If it returns, continue rather than assuming the card is condemned.
Compare another workload
Use a second game, video path, or graphics application that exercises the GPU differently. A timeout limited to one engine or feature points toward software or workload compatibility; failures across unrelated workloads strengthen the case for a platform or hardware investigation.
Test the display path
If the incident follows monitor switching, a dock, an adapter, or a particular cable arrangement, simplify the setup to one monitor connected directly to the graphics output. Test a cold boot and a wake cycle separately. Keep the original configuration details so support can reproduce the transition that matters.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCross-test hardware when you can do so safely
A known-good graphics card in the affected computer, or the suspect card in another compatible computer, provides stronger evidence than repeated driver reinstalls. Match the required power connectors, slot type, operating system, and driver support. If you cannot perform the swap safely, stop and use manufacturer service rather than risking damage.
When to escalate and what to send
Contact the GPU, computer, or motherboard manufacturer when 141 repeats after a controlled driver comparison, stock settings, and physical checks; when the event follows the card to another system; or when it coincides with WHEA, power, or repeated reboot events. Ask for diagnostics or warranty guidance rather than requesting a replacement solely from the error code.
Include a compact evidence package:
- GPU model, computer or motherboard model, Windows edition and build, and graphics-driver version tested.
- Reliability Monitor details for each 141 event, including parameters and any named module.
- Event Viewer entries from Windows Logs > System at the same timestamps, especially display, device, power, and WHEA records.
- The exact workload and reproduction steps, including monitor configuration and whether the failure happened at idle, during wake, or under load.
- A list of changes already tested: Windows update state, driver version and rollback result, stock settings, overlay state, temperature observations, cable or seating checks, and any cross-test result.
Do not edit TDR timing values merely to hide the event. A longer timeout can change when recovery occurs without removing the underlying driver, workload, power, thermal, or hardware condition. Preserve the original behavior and evidence while troubleshooting.
Quick Recap
What you should remember
- 0x141 means VIDEO_ENGINE_TIMEOUT_DETECTED: a graphics-engine task exceeded Windows’ recovery interval.
- The documented default TDR interval is two seconds. It is a watchdog setting, not a measurement of your card’s speed.
- The event is not a death sentence for the GPU. Driver versions, applications, firmware, power, heat, tuning, and hardware can all be involved.
- Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer provide the timeline. Correlate their entries with what was on screen and with recent changes.
- Use controlled comparisons. Update or roll back the exact driver, return settings to stock, disable overlays, check power and airflow, and cross-test only when safe.
- Escalate with evidence. Replacement should follow isolation testing and manufacturer diagnostics, not the number 141 alone.
If you want an optional shortcut for the driver portion of this process, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, show the current and recommended versions, install official drivers, and provide driver backup, restore, and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a two-day free trial that does not require a credit card before a subscription; results vary, and it cannot repair every graphics timeout.
